Now THAT's a Pane in the Glass!

Chunk of glass popped out behind Yorkton's net 6;25 into the first period in Humboldt and they weren't able to fix it. The game was called, and will be made up at a future date. Tentative date for now is Sun/Jan/11. It was 0-0 and the Terriers were on the powerplay for another 1:50.

Novice Terriers Do Their Part

HUMBOLDT-- A little Pre Game blogging. As we got the Elgar Petersen Arena just before 4:00 this afternoon, there was already a Yorkton/Humboldt game on the ice. Humboldt was hosting a Novice Touranment, with the Yorkton Cooperators in the 'A' Final against one of the host Humboldt teams. It was 7-7 when we got here, Yorkton had a lot of late chances, but it went to a shootout. Yorkton scored on their first two shots, and Cameron Zamonsky, Yorkton's goalie stopped the first two he faced for an 8-7 (SO) final. It was pretty cool, the Terriers went into their room after the game, and the little guys all got their sticks signed. I had a quick chat with the Novice Terriers' Coach Monte Taphorn, and I'll play it during tonight's Pre Game Show if you're reading this between now and then. If not, here it is!

Here's the Yorkton Cooperators Roster:

#1 Jordan Repsh
#30 Cameron Zamonsky

#2 Ian Wyllie
#4 Caden Bracken
#6 Ecko Swain
#7 Dylan Novak
#10 Michael Coleridge
#11 Tiara Gaudry
#12 Kaeden Taphorn
#14 Holden Knights
#15 Keenan Taphorn
#16 Drayton Dudar
#16 Koen Kucher-Paulmark
(two #16s... I'm assuming a typo!)

================

Obviously last night's game in Melfort was not on the radio. I found a seat behind the Terriers' bench. Different perspective for sure... and I think you appreciate the pace a little more the closer you are to the ice. Terriers actually played a very solid game in my opinion, despite getting out-shot and falling 4-3 to the Mustangs. Evan Neibrandt, Travis Coghill and Greg Coburn got the goals, and they came close to tying it in the final minute with goaltender Joel Danyluk on the bench. So the Terriers have 2 of a possible 4 points over the weekend so far, and now wrap it up with tonight's game in Humboldt, against the league-best Broncos, who have been sitting all weekend. It'd sure be nice to sneak away with atleast a point and go .500 or better on the road swing. I haven't had internet access since we left Nipawin Saturday afternoon. Melfort's rink didn't have wireless, and we stayed in Watson last night. I'm assuming the motel also didn't have wireless, but I stayed the night at my grandparents, who also live in Watson, and they don't have internet all together (go figure!). They do have a computer, but only use it for Solitaire and Kaiser.

Lookin' forward to this one tonight, remember it's an early 6:00 start, we'll be on the air at 5:50 with the Pre Game Show on GX94. Novice Coach Monte Taphorn and Terriers' Coach/GM Ed Zawatsky will join us on the Pre Game Show, Terriers' forward Travis Coghill in the first intermission with the Wholesale Transmission Player Profile... and an Alumni Update with former Terrier goalie Lynden Sammartino after the second period. Hope you enjoy!

Halfway Report: Melville Millioniares

Record: 20-6-2... 42 pts... 1st in Sherwood

On Pace: 40-12-4... 84 pts...

Synopsis:
Outside the Mils' locker room, I think most people thought they might be on the bubble just to make the playoffs this season. Gone from last season, a lot of scoring punch, in Dion Campbell, Brad Johnston, Bryant Dyke, Scott Hennings, Chris Shudo and Jordan Wilson, along with one of the best offensive defensemen in the league in Derek Edwards. Not to mention two of their goalies in Joe Rodwell and Kyle Cantlon, both of whom were eligible to return, but Rodwell was on loan from Prince George (BCHL), and is now playing at UBC. Cantlon's shoulders were banged up and he was sent back to his native Ontario. But, that paved the way for another 20-year-old, Travis Bosch to get the bulk of the games this season, and to say he's made the most of the opportunity would be the understatement of the year.
The problem is, and I'm sometimes guilty of this too, is people tend to look only at who's NOT back, rather than focussing on who IS. Daniel Hope, Kale Dolinski, Levi Lind, Matt Kinnunen, Aaron Decorby, Tyler Murray, Michael Jordan, etc, etc, throw in Logan Herauf and newcomer Brayden Metz up front, and a big, veteran 'D', and you realize why the Mils are tops in the Sherwood at the midway point.
It's been a balanced attack for the Mils so far, with 5 guys hitting double digits in goals already (Hope-14, Dolinski-12, Lind, Herauf, Stanicky-10), and it would be 6 if Aaron Decorby wasn't hurt. He's got 9 goals in 19 games, and was leading the club in goals when he went down.
Head Coach Jamie Fiesel has often said, "We don't 'wow' teams, we don't blow teams out, but we're big, and we're efficient." That pretty much sums it up. Aside from a 7-1 win over Kindersley, which was followed up by a 2-1 loss to the Klippers two nights later, the Mils don't pile up the goals, but they've given up the fewest in the league, much in thanks to Travis Bosch. Backup Riley Hengen also hasn't let the Mils down yet (5-0, 1.74, .939 since coming to MVL).

What to expect?
The Sherwood Conference is strong, but the Mils, once they get everyone healthy, and a guy like Brayden Metz gets more comfortable with the new systems, I think they'll stay right where they are and win the Sherwood pennant. Even if they do, they'll still have a tough first round against whoever wins the Survivor Series, because the Conference is just that strong. Look for Travis Bosch to lead the league in minutes played and wins, and probably get some looks for Top Goalie, or even MVP.

HALFWAY HARDWARE

Just like I said on the Terriers' report, comments are free and you can direct them at the bottom of the post. I'd prefer if you use your name, but I can't force anyone to not post anonymously, so any input is appreciated.

Most Valuable Player
Travis Bosch, Goaltender

If I didn't give this away in my summary yet, I firmly believe Travis Bosch has been Melville's best player so far, and they likely wouldn't own top spot in the conference if not for him. While team defense has been good, Bosch is the biggest reason why they've allowed a league-low in goals, and have the best penalty kill in the conference, and second best in the league.

Most Improved Player
Tyson Melnychuk, Forward

This was the hardest to pick. I almost made it a 3 or 4-way tie, but I decided not to do ties. Forwards Michael Jordan and Shane Stanicky, and defenseman Austin Krahenbil could all easily be named Most Improved, but I'm going with local product Tyson Melnychuk. To date, Melnychuk's got 10 points in 27 games this season, after playing just 20 games last season and registering one assist, before being re-assigned to Fort Knox (PJHL).

Most Pleasant Surprise
Shane Stanicky, Forward

I was thinking I'd give this one out to rookies, but as mentioned, Stanicky would have been a good candidate for Most Improved, and I think his 10 goals, which equals last year's total, and 20 points, which is one more than he had all last season, is a nice surprise for the Mils through 28 games. Stanicky can play on any line, first through fourth, and use his speed and bump-and-grind style to contribute no matter who he's playing with. I was also thinking of giving this one to rookie Logan Herauf, who's at a point-per-game as a rookie, but I think Fiesel expected Herauf to be an impact player.

The Mils' scorers (Hope, Dolinski, Lind, etc) got left out of these awards, but they're all huge pieces to the Mils' puzzle. I wanted to recognize some guys who are a little under the radar who are doing the little things to get the Mils to where they are so far.

Terriers 5 Hawks 2

The way the first period went, it looked like it'd be an old fashioned shootout... but the after the Terriers took a 3-2 first period lead, they tightened up defensively and held on for a 5-2 win over the Nipawin Hawks.

Nipawin took the first lead of the game, when Shawn McNulty beat Joel Danyluk 4 minutes in.

From there, the Terriers never trailed again, scoring 3 times in the first and twice in the third.
Rylan McDonnell, Derek Serdachny and Cody Zubko all had a goal and an assist... Travis Coghill had two helpers, while Brett Holloway notched his first SJHL goal, and Jordan Menke rounded out the scoring.

Yorkton's powerplay may have been the only downside, going 0-for-7... Nipawin was 0-for-2.

Joel Danyluk got the win, making 29 saves on 31 shots.

The Terriers continue their 3-game road trip in Melfort tonight (SAT).

------------------------

It was a goaltenders' duel in Melville, with Notre Dame's Todd Mathews coming out on top.

Mathews made 39 saves on 40 shots, while Melville's Travis Bosch stopped 37 of the 39 he faced as the Mils dropped a tight 2-1 decision to the Hounds.

Kale Dolinski scored the Mils' lone goal, while Thomas Williams and Travis Janke tallied in the win for Notre Dame.

The Mils host the Hounds yet again on Wednesday.

From Nipawin

NIPAWIN-- The Terriers left Yorkton before noon today, ate lunch and then checked in to the Hotel right on the Evergreen Golf Course, where I'm typing this very post from. Beautiful place, even in the winter with a little snow on the ground. I even scored my own room somehow, complete with internet. Thanks again Lyle et al at GX for the laptop!

Startin to feel the Christmas spirit. Much in thanks to Terriers' goalie Joel Danyluk. Joel brought three boxes of Christmas oranges on the bus to share today. And he didn't stop there. Right after pre game meal, Joel led a nice 5-person harmony of "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" infront of everyone (I believe because they lost the shootout at the end of the morning skate). Joining Joel were Kurtis Decker, Shawn Shackleton, Derek Derkach and Chad Crozier. All D-men. No wonder they lost the shootout. Danyluk took lead vocals while his four defenseman chimed in with the echos ("like a lightbulb," "like monopoly," etc).

Anyway, Terriers and Hawks tonight. As soon as I got on the bus Kevin Stringfellow, who's out of the lineup, immediately offered to do colour, so looking forward to that.

- This is the third meeting between these two teams this season, and the first in Nipawin. The Terriers are 1-0-0-1 in the season series, winning 2-1 September 19th, and falling 6-5 (SO) on October 22nd. That was one they'd probably like to forget, having squandered a 4-0 lead.

- Not too many remarkable stats as far as head to head goes. Cody Zubko's got 2-goals and 3-points vs Nipawin this season, while Torey Dyck, Mike Rey and Matt Schneider all have 3-points for the Hawks against Yorkton.

- Two of the league's most offensively gifted defensemen square off tonight. Yorkton's Greg Coburn leads the Terriers in points (8-18-26), while Nipawin's Taylor Theissen (7-18-25) is one point shy of captain Torey Dyck (12-14-26).

- Derek Serdachny's got 10 points (3-7) in his last 10 games, while Torey Stott has 7-goals in his last 10. Of course 3 came in last Friday's 3-1 win over Melville.

- In limited opportunities, Nipawin's special teams have been strong against the Terriers. (PP: 2/7, 28.6%... PK: 7/8, 87.5%).

All for now, talk to y'all at 7:20.

Terriers (14-10-0-5) @ Hawks (9-17-0-1)

I'll try to post a bit of a preview for tonight's broadcast, but the bus leaves at 11:00. Just incase, here's the Scouting Report from http://www.sjhl.ca/.

Blizzard (16-10-3-2) @ Stamps (11-14-3-1)

- It's the Stampeders' first game in 9 days tonight as they host the OCN Blizzard, 7:30 at the Centennial Arena.

- OCN's been red-hot, they had a 6-game winning streak snapped with a 7-6 shootout loss to Portage on Saturday. However, they did take 3 of a possible 4 points against Portage over the weekend, are are 3-1-1 against the league-best Terriers this season. The Blizzard do have points in 7 straight games (6-0-1).

- These two teams have played eachother tight this season. The Stamps have had a slight upper hand in 4 meetings, going 2-1-1, while OCN's 2-2. The Stamps have out-scored the Blizz 12-10 on the season. The first 3 games were all one-goal games (4-3 OCN, 1-0 (OT) OCN, 4-3 SV), while the Stamps, thanks to Brad McDonald, won the last meeting 5-2 on the road back on November 5th. The rookie McDonald scored 4-goals on the night.

- The Stamps are 8 points out of a playoff spot in the Sherwood Division, but have a 6 point cushion FOR a playoff spot in the Addison. Their 26 points have them 8 back of Wayway for fourth, but 6 points better than Winnipeg South, the 4th place team in the Addison. If the season ended today the Stamps would cross over and play the Winnipeg Saints in round one.

7:20 Pre Game Show, 7:30 Play by Play on GX94. First intermission I'll likely chat with Stamps' rookie forward Ryan Marshall, who was recently named to the CJAHL Prospects Game roster for Team West.

Halfway Report: Yorkton Terriers

Record: 14-9-0-5... 33 pts... T-3rd in Sherwood

On Pace: 28-18-0-10 (66 pts) .589%

Synopsis:
This may be a controversial statement and I hope it doesn't strike a nerve, but as a community I think Yorkton's been spoiled in recent years with the Terriers winning back-to-back championships in '04-'05 and '05-'06, and now, it's a "first place or bust" mentality. Whether it's the coffee shop, the SJHL Message Board, around town, things were very negative about the Terriers this season when they were at or around the .500 mark.
Well I'll defend the organization right here and now by saying the first half of the season's been anything but a disappointment. The Dogs were dealt a serious blow in their first game when a hit from behind ended David Skagen's 19-year-old season before he'd even played a full SJHL game. Skagen had already scored in that game (Sept/12 vs WEY), and was my pre-season pick to lead the Terriers in goals. That's a HUGE loss. Two games in, Bryan Hull goes down for 20+ games with a broken hand. There's your top 2 wingers off your first line, and they still managed to tread water at or above .500. Infact despite these injuries the Terriers have not been below the .500 mark all season.
Now, the Terriers are knocking on the doors of the Sherwood's top 3 teams. Hull's back, while Clarke Breitkreuz, a 17-year-old re-assigned Regina Pat, has lit things up since coming over last week, filling the role vacated by Skagen.
At the start of the year it looked clear that 20-year-old Jordan Barry was the undisputed #1 goaltender, and now he's no longer with the team. And I really don't think it was a case of him playing his way off the team, but more a case of two 18-year-olds just playing a little better, and earning their spots. Devin Peters and Joel Danyluk are the 1-2 punch, with Peters, the reigning SJHL Goalie of the Week, shouldering most of the load of late.
Defense was a question mark but is emerging as a strength. Greg Coburn and Kirk Byczynski might be the top defensive pairing in the Sherwood Conference, with Coburn leading the team in scoring, and probably averaging in the neighbourhood of 35 minutes of ice time per game. I've noticed major improvements in the rest of the D corps, with Kurtis Decker, Derek Derkach, Clarke Byczynski, Shawn Shackleton and newcomer Chad Crozier all staying within their roles and keeping things simple. Team Defense as a whole, including their forwards, has also been very strong. A good example was their PK against Melville over the weekend. They let the Mils set up outside, but didn't allow a lot of shots while short-handed.

What to expect?
Although they've made major strides in the last month, the Terriers still have some work to do if they want to escape a second straight season in the Survivor Series. While they're close to the top 3, they've played more games than two of the teams in front of them. And with Estevan's new additions starting to gel, and Notre Dame landing WHL goalie Todd Mathews, the Terriers aren't exempt from checking the rear-view mirror. They're certainly capable of moving up but they have to get points in those in-conference games, especially against teams like Weyburn, Estevan and Kindersley, and getting more OT or SO points wouldn't hurt either. The Terriers have 5 shootout losses to lead the league by far in that department. They're 1-and-5 in SO's. Had they split those 6, the standings would look a little different. I'm gonna say the Terriers sneak into the top 3 before it's all said and done, and Weyburn will be the team that slips out of it. Surprising, since I figured they'd win the Conference this year before the season started.

HALFWAY HARDWARE
I'm making these awards up, and I'll do them for all 4 of our local teams. The standard MVP, MIP (Most Improved), and MPS (Most Pleasant Surprise).

Agree, disagree, other suggestions... feel free to comment below.

Most Valuable Player
Greg Coburn, Defense

This was almost a no-brainer. Coburn's easily Top-5 in SJHL defensemen. I don't think too many people would argue if I said Humboldt's Brady Wacker and Tanner Vandesype are 1-2. Also in that Top-5 would probably be Flin Flon's Michael Young, and Taylor Thiessen of the Nipawin Hawks. The other 4 are all from the Itech, which leaves Coburn as, I would say, the best defenseman in the Sherwood Conference. He logs over 30:00 per game, leads the Terriers in scoring, and is a leader on and off the ice as a 20-year-old.

Most Improved Player
Jordan Menke, Forward

Menke was re-assigned to Fort Knox (PJHL) last season, but has clearly established himself as a top 9 forward this year. He seems to have an extra gear this season, more jump in his step and just looks quick playing the wing. He's got 17-points in 28-games, and is my pick for MIP.

Most Pleasant Surprise
Devin Peters, Goaltender

I'll get to an honourable mention in a second. But for a guy who phoned the Terriers for a try-out himself, then drove himself from south east Manitoba to Yorkton in time for camp, to now playing the bulk of the Terriers games, winning SJHL Goalie of the Week, surprises don't come any more pleasant than that. I almost picked rookie forward Torey Stott. I think Stott was expected to play in the top 2 lines and contribute right away, but I don't think even Coach/GM Ed Zawatsky would have ever thought he'd be leading the team in goals (13). Stott gets a runner-up mention, but I gotta go with Peters.

Marshall Off to CJAHL Prospects Game

Swan Valley Stampeder forward Ryan Marshall was named to Team West for the Canadian Junior 'A' Prospects Game in Summerside, PEI.

The rookie from Ste. Rose has 4 goals and 17 points in 29 games this season, ranking his 5th on the Stampeders' club in points.

The Stamps host OCN tomorrow (WED), you can catch the game on GX94.

3 SJHLers also made Team West. Flon Flon defenseman Michael Young, and the Schwartz brothers, Rylan and Jaden, from Notre Dame.

The Prospects Game runs December 16th and 17th.

SJHL Goaltender of the Week: Devin Peters

(From www.sjhl.ca)

SJHL GOALTENDER OF THE WEEK
Winner: Devin Peters, Yorkton Terriers

1990 G Devin Peters (St. Anne MB) is red hot in the month of November and he backstopped the Terriers to a pair of victories over the weekend against the Melville Millionaires. On Friday, Peters stopped 33-of-34 shots and then he turned away 43-of-44 on Saturday (2-0, 1.00, .974).

In his last four starts, Peters is 4-0, 1.71, .954.

Runners-up: Tanner Erickson Weyburn; Travis Bosch, Melville; Jordan Washburn, Melfort; Ryan Nieszner, Kindersley.

3 Medals For Local Sr Boys V-Ball Teams

The Kelvington Golden Hawks Senior Boys Volleyball team equalled the performance of their female counterparts from a week ago, striking 4A Provincial Gold over the weekend. Kelvington's only loss in the round robin was to Assiniboia, who they wound up beating in the final. In the playoffs, Kelvington swept Lumsden, Melville, and Assiniboia to claim the gold. Melville bounced back to take the Bronze, 2-set-to-1 over Warman.

In 2A Boys in Frontier, Chief Kahkewistahaw (Broadview) lost in the Gold Medal game against Fox Valley, to take Silver. Lemberg narrowly missed the podium, falling to host Frontier in the Bronze Medal match.

Also 3A Boys were held at LCBI in Outlook, with Langenburg falling in their Quarter Final matchup, while Wolseley went 0-and-4, missing out on the playoff round.

Locals Show Well At Commonwealth Taekwondo

(Submitted)

The 4th Commonwealth Taekwondo Championships was held in Winnipeg on November 21-23.

There was participation by Olympian athletes at this event. The quality was extremely high. There were 240 athletes from the Commonwealth at the event. The event was held at the prestigious MTS Centre.

Australia has an extremely strong team but this year England was awarded the top team award. The small city of Yortkon was well represented at this event as they had athletes and coaches that were selected to represent Canada. Kira Schaab in Juniors and Skye Ashcroft in Seniors finished 4th at the event and just short of the medals. However Autumn Ashcroft finished strong to capture the bronze medal in Adult Female feather black belt. Autumn had a strong match against the gold medalist losing to a score of 5 to 4.

The greatest achievement was from Rae Ashcroft who captured gold in the junior female light middle weight division. She used Graeme Mitchell's (her coach) advice well and even though she has a chronic injury that negated the use of her strong right leg attacks, managed to go through the whole event undefeated. Yorkton, Saskatchewan should be extremely proud of our Commonwealth Gold medalist Champion.

Yorkton's Jesse Mitchell competed in the pattern division. He finished in fourth place and out of the medals.

Susanne Mitchell was present as an International Referee. She was chosen by the referee committee and highest world ranked international referees as the best female referee at the event. Susanne has a quiet pride in her strive to be better. She will modestly tell you she is working at improving every aspect. In her international referee world there is no room for error in referee game management and judgement as the athletes careers are on the line.

This is an very high honour and goes to show that a very high level of excellence in all aspects of the Taekwondo Programs in our small corner of the world. This championship is used by the Commonwealth Taekwondo Union as a vehicle to move Taekwondo into the full Commonwealth Games.

The 5th Commonwealth Taekwondo Championships are scheduled to be in New Dehli, India January 20-24, 2011.

Master Mitchell is managing the Commonwealth Taekwondo exchange training Camp from November 24 - 29. The camp includes strength training experts and lectures on Nutrition, recovery, mental training and DartFish video analysis. The Canadian Taekwondo Olympic Team effectively used this video analysis at the 2008 Beijing Olympics to capture their silver medal success. The camp also consists of team training with the Australian, New Zealand, Welsh, and Northern Ireland team members.

National Rankings

I wouldn't wanna be the guy in charge of the weekly Top 15 CJAHL rankings, simply because that's a whole lot of teams to sift through and decide who's number 1 through 15, when all league's are likely a little different in calibre, etc.

But it is a little puzzling, how Melville won 8 in a row, then lost one, and dropped in the rankings, and this week, lost 2 in a row, and went up 4 spots. They're now ranked #9 in the country, while Humboldt's slipped to third behind Portage and Weyburn's got themselves an honourable mention.

1. (1) Sherwood Park Crusaders (AJHL)
2. (3) Portage Terriers (MJHL)
3. (2) Humboldt Broncos (SJHL)

Ex-Mil/Wayway Product Involved In WHL Melee

While checking some scores this morning, I went to see how former Millionaire Tayler Jordan made out with Portland last night, in a 6-2 loss to Seattle. He was held pointless, and had 46 PIMs. 46! Went to the game summary, saw Tayler got a high sticking minor in the first period, and then, at the 15:32 mark of the second, got 2 serperate roughing minors, a Gross Misconduct, and a third man in, both of which usually carry suspensions as well. And who was on the other end of it, none other than Waywayseecappo product Chris Cloud of the Thunderbirds. Cloud had 2 for roughing, 5 for fighting, also a third man in, and a 10 minute misconduct. 37 minutes in total.

Check out the Game Sheet.

Yorkton Completes Sweep

The Hockey gods are starting to even things out.

After 10 straight Melville wins over Yorkton, the Terriers swept the Mils over the weekend, following up Friday's 3-1 win with a 2-1 victory in Melville Saturday night.

The Terriers didn't trail all weekend, as Clarke Breitkreuz opened the scoring on Saturday, his fourth goal in his third game as a Terrier. Brayden Metz tied the game with his first SJHL goal for the Mils in the second period, before Greg Coburn got the eventual winner with a 5-on-3 powerplay goal late in the second.

It's the first time the Mils have dropped back to back games this season, they're now 19-5-2. The Terriers improve to 13-9-0-5.

There was a little entertainment in this one. Mils' Coach Jamie Fiesel was tossed after Yorkton's 5-on-3 goal, and made a grande exit! Feez bowed and waved to the fans on his way out the door. It's was the first time he'd ever been tossed from a game, atleast on his own.

Here's how this blog is different than others. I can't really comment on anything, especially between these two teams. I can just say what happened. Most blogs are meant for opinions, etc. Here, you pretty much just get the facts. If I go one way or another, the fecal matter hits the fan. I'll set the record straight right now and say I like both teams and enjoy being around them both, and I know they both can't be in the league final against Humboldt this April, but I sure hope one of them is.

I drove around the block a couple times looking for a place to park, wound up in the Bargain Shop parking lot across from the rink, at about 7:35... on my way across the street, I hear the place erupt, the horn going. I think to myself, ok, 1-0 Melville. I walk in, and it's 0-0, and Melville's on the PK. I was told by a few outraged Mils fans, that Matt Kinnunen scored, and either him or one of his linemates clipped Terrier goalie Devin Peters (who was outstanding again) as the puck crossed the line, the goal was waved off and it was called goalie interfence. Keep in mind I heard the story from Melville fans, and never got the story explained to me by any Terrier supporters.

Although being out-shot 44-28, Yorkton played great and have made huge strides in the last couple weeks. These were two gigantic wins for the Terriers, and makes the South even more interesting, because it looks like they're for real now two, and in the same class as Melville, Kindersley and Weyburn. And don't look now, but Estevan's starting to click and Notre Dame's got a goalie who can steal games. I have NO idea who's gonna finish 6th and out of the playoffs. It's gonna come down to the last week of the season, I will say that much.

And you know what? Yorkton winning these two games over the weekend was the BEST thing that could have happened for this rivalry. Rivalries aren't as fun when one team wins 10 in a row like the Mils did, and when the Terriers had the upper hand during their 2-year championship run. It's 2-2 this season, and as usual, these two clubs will ring in the New Year after Christmas. Who's excited for that home-and-home?

One more stat.

Friday. Game on radio. 1451 fans.

Saturday. Game not on radio. 889 fans.

I've had board members from both teams ask 'Why do you do Yorkton-Melville games? Let the fans come to the games.'

Guess what. They still come!

Terriers Get By Mils

The Yorkton Terriers took round one of the Highway 10 home and home on Friday, with a 3-1 win over the Millionaires.

All four goals in the game came on the powerplay, with Torey Stott scoring all 3 Terrier goals. Tyler Murray responded for the Mils.

Special teams were key, with both teams scoring on their first powerplays, while Yorkton capitalized on their first two, and went 3/8 on the night. The Mils' PP went silent after that first goal, going 1/7 on the night.

The Mils actually out-shot the Terriers 34-24. Devin Peters got the win making 33 saves. Melville's Travis Bosch allowed 3 goals on 15 shots in 40 minutes of work, before Riley Hengen stopped all 9 shots he faced in the third period.

The two teams hook up again tonight (SAT) at Melville Stadium.

P.S. Told you the radio doesn't hurt crowds! 1451 fans.

Byczynski Mullet Night

Kirk Byczynski joined me on the 12:00 Sports today to talk about shaving his mullet before tonight's game vs Melville. All proceeds are going to Close Cuts For Cancer.

Mils (19-3-2) @ Terriers (11-9-0-5)

Can't wait for this one.

We were supposed to broadcast the Mils and Terriers first meeting of the year on October 10th, but there was a problem with the phone lines. I'm told SaskTel fixed it up the following Monday so that's good news.

Know what I'd love to see? A packed barn at Farrell Agencies Arena, and half the fans wearing headphones/radios!

The two teams haven't been getting the best of crowds this season, aside from when they play each other. It makes me scratch my head, because they're both playing very good hockey. I don't think either team likes when we broadcast home games, but we always do the Friday game of Yor/Mvl home-and-homes. I truly believe that the handful of people who might stay home because the game's on the radio is LARGELY out-weighed by the number of people listening who wouldn't have come anyway, due to work, other commitments, sickness, travel, etc. It expands the fan base beyond the 1000 people in the rink, and I think that's important. I truly believe there'll be well over 1000 people NOT at the rink listening to tonight's game in GX94's big area, and online at http://www.gx94radio.com/.

Anyway, let's break this one down.

- Melville's won the last 10 meetings between these two teams, dating back to last year's regular season and playoffs, and the first two games this season, but very few have been lopsided. This season Melville won 4-3 in Yorkton Oct/10, and 6-4 with an empty netter in Melville the following night.

- Tonight's game marks the Mils debut for 18-year-old Brayden Metz. Metz was re-assigned by the WHL's Moose Jaw Warriors earlier in the week. He had 2-goals in 13-games with the Warriors this year, after an early season trade with Chilliwack. Metz was in the WHL as early as age 15, when he played 4 games with his hometown Regina Pats, who drafted him 21st overall in his Bantam Draft year.

- This will also be my first look at another former WHLer and Regina Pat Clarke Breitkreuz for Yorkton. The 17-year-old from Springside already has 3-goals in 2-games with the Terriers. I'll have to catch up with him before the game and ask him how in the world to say his name. Voice of the Pats Rod Pedersen, who's one of the best in the business and I'm sure asked the question as well, called him BRI-kruze. Of course in this area, it's pronounced BRI-kritze. I've also heard his older brother Brett of the Edmonton Oil Kings get called BRI-kruze in the WHL circles.

- Melville's recent shake-up of their forward lines has rejuvenated the season of Matt Kinnunen. After a slow start (much in part to playing hurt), Kinnunen, who has 5-goals and 7-assists for 12-points in 18-games this season, has scored all 5 of those goals and 3 of those assists in his last 5 games. He rides a 5-game point streak (5-3-8) heading into tonight's action.

- Terrier defenseman Greg Coburn has been a model of consistency this season. A lot of "point-per-game" players might get 3 points one night, and none for the next 3. Not Coburn. He's got points in 19 of the Terriers' 25 games this season. He's had one 3-point game, two 2-point games, and the rest of the time, he's been good for a single point almost each and every game. The blue liner leads the Terriers in scoring (25-7-16-23), and ranks 4th among SJHL rearguards, behind Brady Wacker and Tanner Vandesype (HUM), and Taylor Theissen (NIP).

- Mils' goalie Travis Bosch continues to be LIGHTS OUT. He leads the league in Wins (15), Minutes Played (1244) and Save Percentage (.936). In his last 10 decisions, Bosch is 8-1-1 with a 1.40 GAA and a .955%. As a team, the Mils only have one shutout so far this season (Bosch vs EST Sep/13), but they've kept the opposition to one goal 9 times. So in their 19 wins, they've held the other team to 1 goal or less 10 times. They've given up a league-low 51 goals in 24 games (2.13/game).

- Cody Zubko snapped a 3-game pointless streak in a big way, with a 3 point (2-1) effort Wednesday against Estevan. Zubko's second in Terrier scoring, one point behind Coburn.

- Captain of the Millionaires Daniel Hope has 14 points in his last 8 games, and every game he's had points during that stretch has been a multi-point night for the Kelvington product. He's had 2-points four times, and 3-points twice over that stretch. He leads the team in goals (13), assists (20) and points (33).

- While the Mils may have the edge up front as far as putting up points so far this season, the Terriers have received considerably more offense from their defense than Melville. Yorkton's 6 regular defensemen have combined for 17-goals, 42-assists, and 59-points. Coburn (7-16-23), K. Byczynski (5-10-15), Derkach (1-9-10), C. Byczynski (2-3-5), Shackleton (1-4-5), Decker (1-0-1). Melville's top 6 have put up just 3-goals, 16-assists, and 19-points. Beech (0-0-6), Reeve (0-0-4), Mastad (0-0-4), Krahenbil (2-1-3), Houde (1-1-2), Jorgenson (0-0-0). Part of this could be because Melville's powerplay units have at least 4, sometimes 5 forwards on them, while the Terriers generally keep two D-men on the back end, usually Coburn and Kirk Byczynski. Still though, quite the stat I thought. All 6 Terrier defensemen have at least one goal, while only two Mils D-men have scored. Although Tayler Jordan, who's now in Portland, did have 2-goals and an assist during his short stint in Melville.

- And don't forget, Kirk Byczynski is shaving his mullet for Close Cuts For Cancer during tonight's game. You can donate to the cause through the Terriers' website (http://www.yorktonterriers.com/), or the booster booth. I believe Kirk's joining me live on the 12:00 sports today for some more info. Definitely a great cause. Way to go Kirk!

7:20 Pre Game Show, 7:30 faceoff tonight on GX94 from Farrell Agencies Arena.

Metz To Melville

The Melville Millionaires are happy to announce the addition of 18-year-old forward Brayden Metz, who was re-assigned by the WHL's Moose Jaw Warriors.

The Regina product had 2-goals in 13 games with the Warriors this season, after an early season trade with the Chilliwack Bruins. With the Bruins as a 17-year-old last season, Metz put up 4-goals, 6-assists and 10-points in 48 games. He also saw time in Chilliwack, and Regina as a 16-year-old (2-games each), and even played 4 games with his hometown Pats when he was just 15.

Bad news, the Mils are also going to be without local product Aaron Decorby for the next month with a lower body injury, so Metz is expected to join Levi Lind and Logan Herauf in Decorby's role.

Metz was the first pick in the second round of the 2005 WHL Bantam Draft, going 21st overall to the Pats.

Mils Win... Terriers/Wolves Fall in SO's

Another 4-1 win for the Melville Millionaires over the Weyburn Red Wings.

The Mils beat the Wings now 4-straight times this season, and 3 of their wins have been 4-1 scores, the other a much closer 2-1 margin on Tuesday.

The newly formed line of Daniel Hope, Kale Dolinski and Matt Kinnunen had another strong game, combining for 8 points.

Dolinski and Kinnunen each had a goal and two assists, while Hope continued his recent hot streak with a goal and a helper. Logan Herauf also found the net for Melville.

Lots of shots in last night's (WED) game. Travis Bosch faced 36 and stopped 35. Weyburn's A.J. Whiffen faced 42. Bosch has played all four meetings against the Red Wings this season, winning them all, while keeping them to just asingle goal in all four games.

The Mils have today (THU) off, before taking on the Yorkton Terriers in a home and home Friday (in YOR), and Saturday(in MVL).

---------------------

The Yorkton Terriers got a point, but hoped for more after building a 2-0 lead on the Estevan Bruins. The Bruins wound up winning 5-4 in a shootout that lasted 5 rounds.

Cody Zubko led the Terriers with 2 goals and an assist... Clarke Breitkreuz and Evan Neibrandt had the other goals while Kevin Stringfellow set up a pair.

Joel Danyluk played goal for Yorkton and made 34 saves on 38 shots.

----------------------

The Wayway Wolverines and OCN Blizzard are now tied for 3rd in the MJHL's Sherwood Division standings after the Blizzard got by the Wolverines 2-1 in a shootout last night.

OCN scored first when Kent Sauter found the net with 32 seconds left in the first period.

Paul Marcoux answered in the second to tie it at one... and after a scoreless third period and overtime... it went to a shootout.

Mitch Olson scored on OCN's first shot, and Blizzard goalie David Aime stopped Marcoux, Logan Dew and Jason Bowles to get the Blizz the extra point.

Aime stopped 23 of 24 shots in regulation and overtime, while Wayway's Jayme Janzen made 24 saves on 25 shots.

The two teams are now deadlocked in third, each with 34 points.

Wolves (14-8-3-2) @ Blizzard (14-10-3-1)

Just one point separates the 3rd place Wayway Wolverines from the 4th place OCN Blizzard as they meet for the fourth time this season tonight in OCN.

Here's the Scouting Report from the MJHL site.

7:20 Pre Game Show, 7:30 Play by Play on GX94

Strong First Period Enough as Mils Clip Wings

The Melville Millionaires continue to have the Weyburn Red Wings' number, beating the Wings for the third straight time this season 2-1 last (TUE) night.

All the scoring was done in the first period. Daniel Hope scored an unassisted goal 1:25 into the game... the Wings answered on the powerplay at 16:15 when Preston Shupe tipped in a point shot, before Matt Kinnunen scored a powerplay goal of his own on a 5-on-3 with 47 seconds left in the period.

With the win the Mils improve to 18-3-2... Travis Bosch got the win with a 28 save performance... Tanner Erickson was almost as good, stopping 24 of the 26 he faced.

Melville's kept the Red Wings to just one goal in each of their first three meetings.

The Mils go for the home-and-home sweep tonight (WED) when they host Weyburn at 7:30

Mils (17-3-2) @ Red Wings (17-9-0)

First of all, check out the Mils 100 Years of Memories link. Talked to Don Chesney today and I'm going to air him tonight. If you absolutely can't tune in you can listen to it in its entirety over there. It's never dull with Chez.

- The Millionaires have beat the Weyburn Red Wings in both head to head matchups, once at home, once on the road (a week ago), and both by 4-1 scores. Tyler Murray leads the team with 4 points (all assists) against the Wings this season. Murray's also got a nice 5-game point streak on the go (1-7-8). Goaltender Travis Bosch has a 1.00 GAA and a .966% against Weyburn.

- Not sure if he's playing tonight, I'll find that out at the rink, but the Red Wings are happy to welcome back F Luke Johnson. The 20 year old was pursuing a career of the ice but has had a change of heart. Johnson played 54 games last season, scoring 16-goals, 18-assists, for 34 points.

- The Mils are switching up the lines a little tonight.

Old lines:

Herauf-Lind-Hope
Dolinski-Murray-Kinnunen
Stanicky-Melnychuk-Jordan
Rogoschewsky-Moore-Peel
(Decorby was injured)

Tonight's lines:

Herauf-Lind-Decorby
Dolinski-Kinnunen-Hope
Stanicky-Murray-Peel
Rogoschewsky-Melnychuk-Jordan

Coach Fiesel thinks that makes them a deeper hockey team, and I think he's right. He talks about the new combos on tonight's Pre Game Show.

- We should sound better tonight! With STILL no phone lines in Weyburn, the game itself will still be cell phone quality... but our interviews will be studio quality today. We thought we had it all figured out last week that I could record interviews at the rink, and while it sounded perfect through my headset, for whatever reason they were barely audible over the air. So, I taped Feez's Pre Game Show this morning, and we'll just play it from the station... same with Daniel Hope's Player Profile that we tried to play last week but sounded bad... that'll run again today, from the station. And of course Don Chesney in the second INT... will run from the radio station.

- I'm excited for this one! Another first place showdown with the Mils 2 pts ahead of the Red Wings (Mils also have 4 games in hand). 7:20 Pre Game Show, 7:30 Play by Play on GX94. Gotta run, bus leaves at 3:00.

Stamps Squander Lead, Pull Out OT Win

Whether you cheer for Wayway or Swan, last night's game was a see-saw affair.
The Stampeders played a pretty solid first half of the game for being on the road, leading 2-0 after one and 3-0 early in the second.

But 9 seconds after the Stamps scored their third goal, Logan Dew replied for the Wolverines... Richard Little added another 5 minutes later, and late in the third, with the goalie out, Jerrett Bicknell pounced on a rebound with 33 seconds left to force overtime.

In overtime, the Stamps got a powerplay and made good, when Justin Giesbrecht tipped in a Ryan Marshall point shot. Also scoring for the Stamps on the night were Myles Stevens, Jared Whincup and Ryan Griffiths.

Swan Valley was out-shot 45-23, with Chris Ward stellar again, making 42 saves.

In four meetings this season, last night was the third time the Stamps and Wolverines have gone to overtime.

Stamps (10-14-3-1) @ Wolves (14-8-2-2)

For a little preview of tonight's game, here's the Scouting Report from http://www.mjhlhockey.ca/ . It the 5th place Swan Valley Stampeders visiting the 3rd place Wayway Wolverines. 7:20 Pre Game Show, 7:30 Play by Play on GX94.

Kelvington Sr Girls Win 3A Volleyball Provs!

The Kelvington Senior Girls Volleyball team hosted, and won 3A Volleyball Provincials over the weekend.

I had a chance to talk to Kelvington Coach Ray Krienke, after he won his 11th Provincial Title in 30 years.

The following write-up is from the http://www.shsaa.ca/ website on their final victory over Rosthern Junior College.

Rosthern JC vs Kelvington
Gold Medal Match: Kelvington Golden Hawks vs. Rosthern Junior College (held in Kelvington)

Set One: 25/16 for Kelvington
Extra chairs were put out on the floor for the additional fans that showed up to watch the gold medal final. The teams played it tight for the first 10 points. The lead changed hands a couple of times. #1 Regier for RJC had a couple of strong serves to keep RJC close. The Hawks Marquette had her serves on and had help from Spray who had a strong hit off a block to keep the Hawks in the lead 7-5. RJC picked it up with hits from Jenn Regier, and Warkentin on two occasions and brought them up to 9-8. When the score was 10-9 RJC, the Hawks Blatchford ended a good rally by dumping the ball in a hole that was left on the RJC side after Heidi Dick and Cara Warkentin for RJC hustled to keep the ball in play during an intense rally. Blatchford kept it going by overpowering RJC’s Jenn Regier at the net to get the 11-10 lead. Kelvington took it to 14 -10 when a timeout was called by RJC’s coach, Adam Ens. RJC was able to get the first point after the timeout but Marquette made it 15 -11 with a huge cross-court hit. RJC got the next point making it 15-12 but then Blatchford dumped the ball into an open hole making it 16-12. At a score of 18-12, Shirley for the Hawks tipped one over the block to get a piece of the sideline making it 19-12. Blatchford got the Hawks 20th point by dumping it to an open spot in the middle. RJC picked up 2 points on a long serve and a net violation by the Hawks but then had a long serve of their own giving the ball back to the Hawks at a 21 -15 lead when Shirley for the Hawks hammered one to the floor. After exchanging points Spray hit one off the RJC block making 24 -15 and Spray ended the set with a line hit from the right side.

Set Two: 25/ 15 for Kelvington
RJC scored first off a block at the net but the Hawks quickly took the lead on a pair of tips. Marquette then scored a kill for the Hawks and Wu nailed an ace serve. RJC’s Shauna Regier responded with a kill of her own. RJC took another point and then Marquette took another point for Kelvington. RJC ‘s Shauna Regier scored on a middle hit and Heidi Dick added a hit from power a couple of plays later. RJC tied the game at 7. Then Shirley scored for the Hawks and Spray aadded a tip for Kelvington. The Hawks kept the pressure on with good serves and strong hits. Spray scored a middle kill for the Hawks to make it 12 -9 but Kelvington missed the serve. The Hawks responded with a big block at the net from Wu and Marquette. Then Marquette blocked again a couple of plays later to give Kelvington a 15-10 lead and prompt RJC to call a time out. The Hawks scored 3 straight after the time out and RJC called their second time out. Wu made a diving dig for Kelvington but RJC scored the first point after play resumed then added another before Blatchford set the ball over her blockers for the point. Marquette scored another off a touched hit (20-13 for Kelvington) then the Hawks expanded their lead with another tip from Blatchford. A missed serve gave RJC the ball but Spray tipped it for another point and followed up with a big kill down the middle. RJC’s Heidi Epp scored on a kill but Spray scored the 25th point on another tip to claim the win and the gold medal for the Kelvington Golden Hawks on their own home turf!

This makes the 11th provincial championship for Coach Ray Krienke who is retiring after this year.

Klippers End Mils' Hot Streak

Tyler Murray opened the scoring for Melville, but the sticks went silent after that, as the red hot Melville Millionaires fell 2-1 at home to the Kindersley Klippers Saturday night.

The Mils were out-shot 22-12 through the first two periods, but turned that around in the third, out-shooting Kindersley 18-5 in the final frame, and 30-27 for the game, but couldn't beat Klipper goalie Ryan Nieszner late. Nieszner made 29 saves in the win, while Travis Bosch kicked out 25 for the home team.

Melville had gone 9 games without a regulation loss before Saturday, and the loss marked their first of the season at home, going a perfect 8-0 at the Stadium up until that point. The loss also marked just the 3rd time in 22 games the Mils left the ice without at least a single point.

The Mils are still first in the Sherwood Conference at 17-3-2, 5 points ahead of the third place Klippers. Both teams have now played 22 games.

The Blue and White now get set for another huge week with a home and home with Weyburn (Tue @ Wey, Wed @ home) this Tuesday and Wednesday, and another home and home against Yorkton this Friday and Saturday (Fri @ Yor, Sat @ home).

Kindersley heads back to Melville tomorrow (SAT) night to round out their 3-game road trip. They've picked up 1 of a possible 4 points so far.

Lucky Seven For Millionaires

In the first rematch of last year's Sherwood Conference final, the Melville Millionaires piled it on with a 7-1 win over the Kindersley Klippers on home ice Thursday night.

Daniel Hope had a hat trick, all in the second period, Matt Kinnunen had 2 goals, giving him 3 in his last 2 games. Shane Stanicky had a goal (SH) and an assists, making it 5 goals in his last 3 for him. Kale Dolinksi had 3 assists, while Tyler Murray and Michael Jordan each had 2. Also scoring for the Mils was rookie Jeff Peel. It was the Virden, MB product's first SJHL goal and point (you can hear his post game comments below).

Special teams told the story, with the Millionaires going 3-for-6 on the powerplay and also scoring a short-handed goal. The Klippers went 0-for-9.

Travis Bosch got the win making 28 saves on 29 shots, while Ryan Nieszner took the loss stopping 36 of the 43 shots he faced.

The two teams meet up again tomorrow (SAT) night, 7:30 at the Stadium.

JEFF PEEL SCORES FIRST SJHL GOAL

(The distracting noise you hear during his first answer is Mils' Trainer Dave Melnychuk trying to mess him up. Very mature Melly!)

Zawatsky Comments on Breitkreuz / KIN @ MVL Tonight

Yorkton Terriers' Head Coach/GM Ed Zawatsky talked about the addition of 1991 F Clarke Breitkreuz from the Regina Pats today. Zawatsky expects him in the lineup when the Terriers host the Kindersley Klippers tomorrow (FRI)

Breitkreuz had one assist with the Pats in 14 games, and last season led the SMAAAHL's Beardys Blackhawks with 22-goals, 29-assists for 51-points in 42-games.

**Zawatsky added the make up date for Tuesday's postponed game with Estevan will be Wednesday, November 26th**

-------------------

Tonight, the teams with the top two winning percentages in the Sherwood Conference hook up for the first time this season as the Melville Millionaires (16-2-2 = .850) entertain the Kindersley Klippers (13-4-0-2 = .737).

Should be a beauty, and the Klippers will be in the area for the next 3 days... after tonight they're in Yorkton tomorrow (FRI), and back in Melville on Saturday.

I'm doing colour with Ryan Tunall for the Klippers' broadcast tonight.

*Radio guy's 2 cents. If you're in/around Melville... why not check out this game? Two of the league's top teams and the Mils are too good to be getting the crowds they've been getting so far. Just tossin' that out there.*

Breitkreuz to Join Terriers / Fiesel Helps Unveil U-17s

Looks like the Yorkton Terriers are getting some help up front. This, from Voice of the Regina Pats Rod Pedersen's blog (http://www.rodpedersen.com/)

Regina, Saskatchewan – The Regina Pats have re-assigned 17 year old forward Clarke Breitkreuz to the Yorkton Terriers of the SJHL. In 14 games this season with the Pats, Breitkreuz picked up an assist and was a -6.

Pats General Manager Brent Parker commented, "Carrying 15 forwards is not an ideal situation, and this will give Clarke the opportunity to receive more playing time with Yorkton. We fully expect him to be back with the organization and contributing in the future."

Melville Millionaires' Coach/GM Jamie Fiesel was at a press conference at the Brandt Centre in Regina this morning, to announce Team West for the 2009 World Under-17's in Port Alberni, B.C., which starts December 29th. Fiesel's an Assistant Coach for Team West. Here's the roster:

Just Feel Like Talking...

- Not much into action flicks, but "Four Brothers" is a pretty good show. Good thing... because I watched it twice in 6 days on hockey trips. Watched it with Swan Valley on the way back from OCN last Wednesday, then again with the Mils coming home from Weyburn last night.

- Does anyone have a better travel schedule in the SJHL than Yorkton or Melville. For the Mils especially, Weyburn was only 2 hours last night... Estevan a little more... Yorkton's 25 minutes... Notre Dame about 2 hours. Even Melfort and Nipawin are fairly quick trips for being out-of-conference. Then of course KIN/BAT, LAR/FF/, but those are all done in overnight trips. Infact both Melville and Yorkton are done with Flin Flon and La Ronge already.

- I won't lie, I was a little gassed from 2 Portage trips in a week. The nearly 4 hour trek is the longest I have to drive alone on my schedule, and I did it twice in 7 days, and 3 times in 3 weeks. Just looked at the schedule... thinking it must be a while before I'm there again... and... I'm DONE going there this season. Hopefully I'm doing games there in the post season though... because they're the team to beat in that league. I tried adding it up. When I worked in Dauphin in 05-06, Dauphin/Portage met in the first round and went 6 games... I did all 4 meetings in the season plus the 3 playoff games... then last year I did roughly another 7... and already 3 this year. That's approximately 17 times I've made the Portage la Prairie trip, and have driven both ways each and every time. Nothin against the Terriers, but it'll be nice to NOT do that trip for the next 3 months... and not during the bad winter driving months.

- I'm going to OCN 5 times this year, but I don't seem to mind that one as much. Probably because it's broken up into halves. I only have to drive for 1:45 of the 4 hr jaunt. The other 2:15 is on a bus. The Stampeders are kind enough to let me meet them at the rink, and same thing if it's Wayway. I meet the Wolverines for lunch at the Westwood Inn in Swan (which they cover), and hop on the bus the rest of the way. It's the drive from Swan to Yorkton at 3am that seems to take forever.

- At 16-2-2, I still don't think the Melville Millionaires THINK they're world beaters. They know they can play better, and they also know they've yet to see the Kindersley Klippers (and they will Thursday/Saturday), or the Humboldt Broncos (not until December 6th and 9th). But with last night's win in Weyburn, the Mils now own a winning percentage of .850%. Impressive. That Weyburn game kicked off a stretch of 7 straight games against Sherwood opponents for the Mils (Weyburn-Kindersley-Kindersley-Weyburn-Weyburn-Yorkton-Yorkton). Now THAT will go to show who's hot and who has work to do. I can't wait for Thursday's game. It's not on the radio but I'll be there.

- If the SJHL season ended today, Yorkton would play Estevan in the Survivor Series. Again. Only this time the Terriers would have home ice advantage, after winning the series in 6 games last season, winning Game 1 on the road 7-1 to set the tone. If the Terriers were to win that series again, guess who they'd meet in the first round. Yep. Again.

- Yorkton's very close to welcoming back Bryan Hull. That'll give the Terriers a HUGE boost in both the offensive and leadership categories. I really think Yorkton will be right in the mix with MVL/WEY/KIN before too long. Heck, they already are.

- This weekend is one of about 3 weekends all year where I don't have a broadcast from Friday to Sunday, so I'm homeward bound Friday after work. I'd love to watch all 3 Kindersley games this weekend, but I'm gonna head to the farm, watch some football on Saturday, etc. Gotta sprinkle in those little breaks throughout the season or you'd go nuts. The players and coaches do it so why shouldn't the radio guy? Like Jamie Fiesel said, "It's just like the wife or girlfriend, sometimes you just need some time apart, and then you like eachother that much more when you get back."

- I told myself I'd do my Christmas shopping in November this year, because I can't even stand the sight of a mall or even a mall parking lot in December. Haven't started yet. I'm thinking I'll take a weekday afternoon that I don't have a game on, since I work mornings... and get as much done as possible. See what's out there in Yorkton, and maybe even make a Regina trip. We'll see.

Until tomorrow,
CS

Another Road Win For Melville

The Millionaires wrapped up a stretch of six straight road games with a 4-1 win over the Weyburn Red Wings on Tuesday night. The Mils went 5-0-1-0 during that stretch, and are now 16-2-2-0 for the season.

After Weyburn's Sam Graham opened the scoring at 3:15, Matt Kinnunen scored his first of the year on the powerplay, Shane Stanicky scored back to back goals, his 8th and 9th of the season, while Kale Dolinski scored into an empty net from his own end with :13 left. Tyler Murray chipped in with a couple assists, while Curtis Beech, Jordan Reeve, Kirk Mastad and Tyson Melnychuk also got on the board with helpers.

This was the first of seven straight games for the Mils against Sherwood Conference opponents. They host Kindersley Thursday and Saturday, play Weyburn back to back Tuesday and Wednesday, before a home and home against Yorkton next Friday and Saturday.

Apparently the sound quality was garbage, atleast for the first period... and I'm told it was near impossible to hear interviews. So, here's Daniel Hope's Player Profile from the first intermission. Also, you can hear Jamie Fiesel by clicking on the Weekly Coach's Shows link.

Mils (15-2-2) @ Red Wings (15-8-0)

It a Remembrance Day edition of David Dedman Pontiac/Buick/GMC Hockey on GX94. The roads are a little slippery around these parts, but as of now it looks like the game will go on.

Still no phone lines in Weyburn's rink, so we'll go through our cell kit again, which means the sound quality will be junk, but better than nothing.

It's just the second meeting of the season between these top two teams in the Sherwood. The Mils (15-2-2) have 32 points to lead the way, while Weyburn (15-8-0) have 30 points... but have also played 4 more games than Melville. Third place Kindersley has the second best winning percentage in the Conference (13-4-0-2= .737%), compared to Weyburn's .652%. Melville has the top winning percentage in the entire SJHL (.842%), while Humboldt's just behind that rate at (17-3-1= .833%).

Melville won the only other meeting between themselves and the Red Wings 4-1 at home back on October 22nd. Travis Bosch made 34 saves on 35 shots that night, while Weyburn's A.J. Whiffen gave up 4 goals on 39 shots.

I'm gonna wrap this up and give myself lots of time to get to Melville... but do tune in tonight... I'll play Brian Propp for our Mils' 100 Year of Memories feature in the second intermission. 7:20 Pre Game Show, 7:30 Play by Play on GX94.

Barry The Odd Man Out in Terriers' Crease

You've probably heard this on coffee row by now... I caught wind of it Friday/Saturday.

The Yorkton Terriers are down in numbers in goal, after releasing 20-year-old Jordan Barry. That leaves them with two 18-year-olds in Joel Danyluk and Devin Peters.

Coach/GM Ed Zawatsky addressed the situation on today's Coach's Show. You can hear that by clicking on the Weekly Coach's Shows link in the top right corner.

Alumni Watch: Shudo / Collins

Chris Shudo joined the Melville Millionaires at the deadline last season, coming over from the Westside Warriors (BCHL). He had 14 points in 16 regular season games as a Millionaire, and now leads the Central Hockey League's Wichita Thunder in goal scoring. He's got 5-goals and 7-points in 8 games, to sit third on the team in points. Shudo's already registered a hat trick in the pro hockey ranks, and his point totals have him ahead of a few notable former Western Hockey Leaguers on his team, like Troy Ofukany (Kelowna/Regina), and Luke Hunter (Swift Current). Other familiar names making their home with the Thunder include another former Mil in Jordan Hack (3 pts in 5 games), and long time Portage Terrier Stan Yanchishyn.

------------------------

Ex Waywayseecappo Wolverine Sean Collins is 2 games into his NCAA career with the Cornell Big Red. Collins is pointless in his first two games, but he's not alone. The Big Red have managed just 1 goal in their first two games. Collins, a 7th round pick of the Columbus Blue Jackets, scored 51-goals and 115-points in Wayway last season, earning himself the scholarship and the NHL draft selection as a 19 year old. Now 20, Collins' junior days are behind him as he pursues his Ivy League degree and hopefully one day, a spot with the Blue Jackets.

Wolverines 4 Terriers 3

In the lobby before the game, I said to Wayway Ass't Coach Jim Fuyarchuk, "I think these guys are due for a loss tonight." He smiled and said, "I hope you're right!"

I guess I was.

The Wolverines handed Portage just their fourth loss of the season, and first since October 21st with a 4-3 win on the road. It was a nice way to end a 3 game road trip for the Wolverines, after suffering losses to Selkirk Friday and the Winnipeg Saints on Saturday.

Wayway's leading scorer Jason Bowles was held off the stats sheet for the second straight night, but several others picked up the slack. Logan Dew had a goal and 2 assists, Paul Marcoux had 3 helpers, Jerrett Bicknell had a pair of assists, while Preston McLeod, Dave Lamouche and Cody Danychuk all scored.

Jayme Janzen made 33 saves on 36 shots for the win.

Sunday Quickie

For the second straight Sunday, I'm heading to Portage to call the Wayway Wolverines (12-7-2-2) and the Terriers (18-3-0). The Wolverines are wrapping up basically the toughest 3-in-3 road trip possible. Friday, they lost 6-3 to the Addison Division 2nd Place Selkirk Steelers, then fell 6-4 to the Addison 1st Place Winnipeg Saints, and now battle the LEAGUE leading Portage Terriers tonight. And go figure, their lone divisional matchup winds up being the 3rd game of the 3 in 3.

Wayway's 28 points has them tied for third in the Sherwood Division with OCN, while the Wolverines have 4 games in hand on the Blizzard heading into tonight's game. Voice of the Blizzard Jamie Smalley told me Wednesday they're the only team to beat Portage in their rink this season, and they did it twice.

6:20 Pre Game, 6:30 Play by Play tonight on GX94.

-----------

In the SJHL last night, Melville beat La Ronge 6-3, improving to 15-2-2, while the Yorkton Terriers left Flin Flon with a split, winning last night's game 4-3.

-----------

I was up early yesterday, spent all day in Regina, including the disappointing Rider game... and I crashed hard when I got home. 11:15 - 10:15. Nice 11 hour sleep! I'll need it after a busy week last week and another Portage trip today, which by the way I should probably begin seeing how I intend to leave 8 minutes from now (12:37). Talk to you tonight!

Whincup Breaks Out as Stamps Cruise By Natives

They gave up the first goal but it was all Stampeders after that as Swan Valley beat Neepawa 5-2. The line of Jared Whincup, Devin Reinhardt and Ryan Griffiths combined for 4-goals and 9-points. After a mega-slump to begin the season (19-games without a goal), Whincup busted out last night with 2-goals and 2-assists. The Captain Reinhardt (pictured, left) had 2-goals and 1-assist, while Griffiths added a pair of helpers. Darcy Riddell had the other goal and added one assist, extending his point streak to 8 games (5G-8A-13P). The Stamps were perfect on the penalty kill once again (6/6), improving their league-leading PK to 86.1%. Goaltender Josh Hohn picked up his first ever MJHL win, making 25 saves on 27 shots. The Stamps have now won 6 of their last 7 games, improving to 10-12-2-1.

---------------

Despite a first line that ripped it up, the Wayway Wolverines dropped a 6-3 decision in Selkirk. Their first line of Jason Bowles, Dave Lamouche and Ryan Regel had 8 points between them (Bowles: 3A, Regel: 1G 2A, Lamouche 2G). Adam Pleskach led the Steelers with 4 points (2-2). Doesn't get a whole lot easier for Wayway this weekend, as they continue their road swing against the top team from each division, the Winnipeg Saints tonight (SAT) and Portage Sunday.

----------------

The Yorkton Terriers dug out of an early 2-0 hole, but wound out falling 3-2 to Flin Flon. Derek Serdachny and Jordan Menke each set up both Terrier goals, which were scored by defenseman Greg Coburn (PP) and Torey Stott. Joel Danyluk stopped 27/30 shots in the loss. The Terriers fall back to .500 at 9-9-0-4. They play in FF again tonight (SAT).

----------------

Logan Herauf had 3 points (1G-2A), Daniel Hope had 2 assists, and Levi Lind had a goal, as the Melville Millionaires' top line led them to a 4-1 victory over the La Ronge Ice Wolves in Stanley Mission. Kale Dolinksi scored Melville's other goal.

Travis Bosch stopped 30 of the 31 shots he faced.

The 2 teams meet up again tonight in La Ronge.

With the victory, the Mils regain sole possession of first with a record of 14-2-2 (30 pts).
