Kelvington Sr Girls Win 3A Volleyball Provs!

The Kelvington Senior Girls Volleyball team hosted, and won 3A Volleyball Provincials over the weekend.

I had a chance to talk to Kelvington Coach Ray Krienke, after he won his 11th Provincial Title in 30 years.

The following write-up is from the http://www.shsaa.ca/ website on their final victory over Rosthern Junior College.

Rosthern JC vs Kelvington
Gold Medal Match: Kelvington Golden Hawks vs. Rosthern Junior College (held in Kelvington)

Set One: 25/16 for Kelvington
Extra chairs were put out on the floor for the additional fans that showed up to watch the gold medal final. The teams played it tight for the first 10 points. The lead changed hands a couple of times. #1 Regier for RJC had a couple of strong serves to keep RJC close. The Hawks Marquette had her serves on and had help from Spray who had a strong hit off a block to keep the Hawks in the lead 7-5. RJC picked it up with hits from Jenn Regier, and Warkentin on two occasions and brought them up to 9-8. When the score was 10-9 RJC, the Hawks Blatchford ended a good rally by dumping the ball in a hole that was left on the RJC side after Heidi Dick and Cara Warkentin for RJC hustled to keep the ball in play during an intense rally. Blatchford kept it going by overpowering RJC’s Jenn Regier at the net to get the 11-10 lead. Kelvington took it to 14 -10 when a timeout was called by RJC’s coach, Adam Ens. RJC was able to get the first point after the timeout but Marquette made it 15 -11 with a huge cross-court hit. RJC got the next point making it 15-12 but then Blatchford dumped the ball into an open hole making it 16-12. At a score of 18-12, Shirley for the Hawks tipped one over the block to get a piece of the sideline making it 19-12. Blatchford got the Hawks 20th point by dumping it to an open spot in the middle. RJC picked up 2 points on a long serve and a net violation by the Hawks but then had a long serve of their own giving the ball back to the Hawks at a 21 -15 lead when Shirley for the Hawks hammered one to the floor. After exchanging points Spray hit one off the RJC block making 24 -15 and Spray ended the set with a line hit from the right side.

Set Two: 25/ 15 for Kelvington
RJC scored first off a block at the net but the Hawks quickly took the lead on a pair of tips. Marquette then scored a kill for the Hawks and Wu nailed an ace serve. RJC’s Shauna Regier responded with a kill of her own. RJC took another point and then Marquette took another point for Kelvington. RJC ‘s Shauna Regier scored on a middle hit and Heidi Dick added a hit from power a couple of plays later. RJC tied the game at 7. Then Shirley scored for the Hawks and Spray aadded a tip for Kelvington. The Hawks kept the pressure on with good serves and strong hits. Spray scored a middle kill for the Hawks to make it 12 -9 but Kelvington missed the serve. The Hawks responded with a big block at the net from Wu and Marquette. Then Marquette blocked again a couple of plays later to give Kelvington a 15-10 lead and prompt RJC to call a time out. The Hawks scored 3 straight after the time out and RJC called their second time out. Wu made a diving dig for Kelvington but RJC scored the first point after play resumed then added another before Blatchford set the ball over her blockers for the point. Marquette scored another off a touched hit (20-13 for Kelvington) then the Hawks expanded their lead with another tip from Blatchford. A missed serve gave RJC the ball but Spray tipped it for another point and followed up with a big kill down the middle. RJC’s Heidi Epp scored on a kill but Spray scored the 25th point on another tip to claim the win and the gold medal for the Kelvington Golden Hawks on their own home turf!
