Finally Friday

- It's been over a month since I've been out of Yorkton aside from work-related things, so I'm heading to Saskatoon after work. It'll be a quick trip, be back tomorrow night so I can leave for Portage by 1:00 on Sunday.

- I heard it's Halloween today. Some people celebrate that their whole lives, but I haven't dressed up since Grade 6. To me, it's one of those VERY annoying commercial holidays that stores gear towards little kids. Speaking of which, I'm hearing some stores around town already have Christmas stock coming in. I love Christmas, but again, WAY too commercial for this cowboy.

- Oh ya, about the picture. Two local teams are in High School Football Provincial Semi-Finals this weekend. The Foam Lake Panthers (9-Man) host the Meadow Lake Spartans Saturday at 1:00. While the Preeceville Panthers travel to take on the Biggar Blazers (2A 6-Man).

- The Riders stole a win in Toronto last (THU) night. But we'll take it. WHY would the Argos try a direct snap on a punt on 3rd and 9 deep in their own territory? Equally as stupid, why did Michael Bishop THROW the ball deep with 20 seconds left, already in field goal position. Ended up getting a pass interference call and eventually a TD, but yikes. He is their most talented quarterback but he scares the crap out of me. Reminds me of the old Henry Burris, when he'd pile up the yards but throw tonnes of picks. Riders will play B.C. in the playoffs and need the Lions to lose Saturday afternoon in Calgary in order to host the West Division Semi. Got my ticket booked... hopefully there's a game!

- The next week could get a little boring with the Yorkton Terriers and Melville Millionaires both off until next Friday. The positive is each team is coming off wins and should enjoy a well deserved week off. Our next 3 broadcasts are all in the MJHL... Wayway @ Portage Sunday... Swan Valley @ OCN Wednesday... Wayway @ Portage again next Sunday.

- The Yorkton Harvest are at home twice this weekend... Saturday at 7:30 and Sunday at 2:00 against the Swift Current Legionnaires.

- November's here already?

Yorkton Native Running in NYC Marathon

Karen Andreychuk, who now makes Calgary her home, is off to New York, NY this weekend to take part in Sunday's New York City Marathon.

Wins All Around For Mils, Terriers, Stamps

The Melville Millionaires made it 3 of a possible 4 points on their Nipawin/Melfort road trip, thanks to a 3-1 win in Melfort on Wednesday night.

The Mils' top forwards were their best players in this one, after being held off the score sheet the last few games.

Kale Dolinsky, Levi Lind and Daniel Hope all had a goal and an assist, while Logan Herauf had a helper as well.

Mils' goalie Riley Hengen was 44 seconds away from his first career shutout, Gary Childerhose banged in a rebound late in the third. Hengen made 21 saves on 22 shots in the win.

The Mils have a lengthy break now... their next action is NEXT Friday/Saturday in La Ronge.

They do maintain their 4-point lead atop the Sherwood Conference with a 13-2-2 mark.

-------------

The Yorkton Terriers split their Kindersley/Battleford trip, finishing off with a 5-2 win in Battleford.

Evan Neibrandt scored twice, both in the second period, while Jordan Menke, Torey Stott and Greg Coburn added singles.

Derek Serdachny and Derek Derkach had 2 assists each.

Jordan Barry played goal for the Terriers, and made 25 saves in the win.

The Terriers are back about .500 with a record of 9-8-0-4.

Yorkton, like Melville, are now off for over a week before heading north to Flin Flon for two games next Friday and Saturday.

---------------

In Manitoba, the Swan Valley Stampeders had a huge home ice victory, beating the OCN Blizzard 4-3.

Chris Reimer scored two goals, Myles Stevens had a goal and an assist, while Ryan Marshall set up a pair and Jared Whincup scored his first of the year.

Despite the win, the Stamps were heavily out-shot, with Chris Ward making 41 saves on 44 shots.

Mils (12-2-2) @ Mustangs (7-6-1-2)

MELFORT-- The Mils can get 3 of a possible 4 points on their road trip if they can pull out a win in Melfort tonight, but it won't be easy. The Mustangs have turned things around much in thanks to newly-acquired goaltender David Tetreault from the AJHL. Tetreault's 6-0-1-0 with a 1.53 GAA and a .945 save percentage since coming to Melfort. The Mils other two goalies who've played this season have combined for a 1-6-0-2 record. Looking forward to seeing this young team tonight (I just hope they don't win!). But especially guys like Blake Hietala and Deven Stillar are tearing it up. Hietala's taken over the team scoring lead, with 10 goals and 18 points. 15 of those points have come in his last 10 games (8-7-15). Stillar's got 9 goals, but he's had that many for awhile. The Sudbury native is without a goal in his last 6 games (0-3-3). The four games before that he scored 6 goals, so he can put the biscuit in the basket.

The Mils will be without their top goal scorer tonight. Aaron Decorby tweaked his knee late in the third period in last night's 3-2 OT loss in Nipawin, and will miss tonight's game. Hopefully, with the Mils having a 10-day break after this one, this will be the only game Aaron and his 9-goals will have to miss.

I'll spill the beans... Goaltender Riley Hengen is getting the start tonight. Riley showed up yesterday with a shaved head, while fellow tender Travis Bosch is going with the bleached blonde. Goalies....

Probably talk to Terence Jorgenson on the player profile tonight... he's a similar situation to last night's guest Jordan Reeve, having missed the first chunk of the season due to injury. Jorgenson's also got some goofy hair going. Buzz cut, with 3 blonde stripes on each side. Feez says he looks like a "Ram."

Second intermission, I'll run my interview with Colorado Avalanche defenseman Brett Clark on our Mils' 100 Years of Memories Feature.

7:20 Pre Game Show, 7:30 Play by Play from the Northern Lights Ice Palace in Melfort.

SJHL website SCOUTING REPORT

----------------------

If you can get to a T.V. between 4:00 and 5:00 SK time today, tune into TSN as Voice of the Riders Rod Pedersen will join Michael Landsberg on Off The Record. Rod's promoting his book, which is all about the Saskatchewan Roughriders' 2007 run to the Grey Cup. Price looks very reasonable... I haven't bought mine, but put it on the Christmas list, and given the price I'm pretty sure I'll get it. Unfortunatley we're checking out of our Nipawin Hotel at 4:15 so I won't catch much if any of OTR.

He's got a link on his blog, which gets roughly 15x the daily hits that this one gets, but incase you hadn't seen it, here's the link to the book. Rod's good people, and works his nuts off, so hopefully this sells an extra book or two for him.

Mils Get a Point, Lose in OT

NIPAWIN-- The Melville Millionaires followed up 55 mediocre minutes with 5 inspired minutes, and wound up forcing overtime and getting a single point.

The Nipawin Hawks scored 2 goals on 2-on-1's, one in the first (K. Miller), and a SHG in the second (Taylor Theissen). The Mils then took control late in the game, and Logan Herauf scored at 14:38, and Michael Jordan tied it with 44 seconds left. Nipawin's Torey Dyck scored the winner just 20 seconds into overtime.

The Hawks improved to 5-10-0-1, while the Mils are now 12-2-2-0, now with a 4 point lead atop the Conference.

The Millionaires are in Melfort tonight (WED)... we'll have the broadcast again... 7:20 Pre Game Show, Play by Play at 7:30.

Mils (12-2-1) @ Hawks (4-10-0-1)

The Melville Millionaires are on a roll, and will roll into Nipawin (TUE) and Melfort (WED) this week.

The Mils have won 7 of their last 8 games, to sit 12-2-1 for the season with 25 points, 3 points better than second place Weyburn.

You know you have a good thing going when your top two lines have been quiet the last few games, and you're still winning. That's because Melville's third line of Tyson Melnychuk, Michael Jordan, and SJHL Player of the Week Shane Stanicky have combined for 13 points in their last 2 games. Stanicky has 5 points in his last 2, while his linemates have added 4 each during that time.

Head to Head this season, the Mils are 2-and-0 with 6-2 and 4-1 victories. Melville's Aaron Decorby leads both teams in the season series with 3 goals and 5 points. His 3 goals and one of his assists all came in the 6-2 win on home ice September 20th.

Nipawin defenseman Taylor Thiessen has been the hottest Hawk recently, with a goal and 11 points over his last 10 games. Thiessen is tied for the team lead in scoring with forward Torey Dyck with 14 points each.

Despite having the SJHL's fewest points (9), the Nipawin Hawks' special teams are among the league's best. Their 26.2% powerplay is second best in the league, half a percent behind Humboldt. Their penalty kill is also second in the league, at 85%. Humboldt leads the way at 89.4%.

The Mils will see 19-year-old defenseman Jordan Reeve make his season debut, coming off a broken leg he suffered in the off-season. Reeve was a top-2 defenseman with the Mils last season, and probably was their best defenseman a lot of nights. He's got the ability to play the powerplay and put up points, but is best known for his puck moving and open ice hits. He'll be a stud this season, and because of Melville's light schedule to start the year, missed only 15 games.

Join us for the Pre Game Show at 7:20 tonight, Play by Play at 7:30 on GX94. I was going to run Colorado Avalanche defenseman Brett Clark on the Mils' 100 Years of Memories for the Yorkton/Melville game that we had to postpone on October 10th. So I'll run Clark either tonight or tomorrow night. I'm thinking I might also surprise Ass't Coach Neil Lamberty and do a feature with him on this trip. I believe he's actually from the Nipawin (White Fox???) area.

-----------------

The Yorkton Terriers have a similar road trip this week... they're in Kindersley tonight, and Battleford tomorrow. The Terriers are third in the Sherwood... 2 points ahead of Kindersley... and 2 back of second place Weyburn.
Notre Dame also travels to Humboldt tonight.

----

Former Terrier Logan Dew makes his Wayway Wolverines debut as the Wolves host the Winkler Flyers tonight at 7:30. Wayway's still right in the thick of the Sherwood Division standings, but had a disappointing weekend that saw them pick up 1 of a possible four points in Winkler and Winnipeg South.

Mils/Terriers/Stamps All Win

For the second straight night, the so-called "grind line" of Shane Stankicky, Tyson Melnychuk and Michael Jordan led the Melville Millionaires to victory. The line scored 3 of the Mils' 4 goals and combined for 7 points in a 4-1 win in Nipawin.

Jordan had a goal and 2 assists, Stanicky scored a pair, while Melnychuk set up a couple. In the last two games, that line's combined for 13 points.

Once again, Travis Bosch stood on his head, making 41 saves. He's now 10-2-1 with a 2.41 GAA and a .930 save percentage.

Melville's won 7 of their last 8 games, and with a Weyburn loss to Notre Dame, now have a 3 point cushion atop the Sherwood Conference.

Their next game, is once again in Nipawin Tuesday, before heading to Melfort on Wednesday.

-------------------

The Yorkton Terriers broke out of a mini funk, beating the Battlefords North Stars 3-1 on home ice.

The Terriers got goals from Rylan McDonnell, Greg Coburn and Corey Silverson.

Joel Danyluk played goal, making 32 saves in his second start of the season, both have come against the North Stars.

-------------------

And the Swan Valley Stampeders snapped a 5 games losing skid with a win in Beausejour.

Myles Stevens had 2 goals and 2 assists, his linemates Vincein Scott and Brad McDonald had 3 points each as the Stampeders won 7-1.

55-9

It's about time we absolutely pound a team, kick them when they're down, and step on their throats. Okay, that was harsh... but it was beautiful. Riders are getting healthy, and their original starters are shining, a la Fantuz, Cates, Dominguez, etc... UH OOOOOOH!

--------------

The Preeceville Panthers also won a game in the wind today, blanking the P.A.C.I. Golden Bears 44-0 this afternoon. The game was on GX94.

Other HS Football scores are on the High School Football page.

Wings 4, Terriers 1 / Stanicky Leads Mils Over Stars

Aside from a span of 2:16, the Yorkton Terriers were right with the Weyburn Red Wings on Friday. But during that time late in the first period, the Wings scored 3 goals, and went on to beat the Terriers 4-1.

Scoring at 17:16, 18:02, and 19:33 were Rhett Bly, Torrey Lindsay and Eric Calibaba for Weyburn.

The second period was scoreless, before Brayden Nargang made it 4-0 early in the third.

Torey Stott scored a powerplay goal for the Terriers from Evan Neibrandt and Greg Coburn to break Tanner Erickson's shutout bid.

Jordan Barry allowed 3 goals on 10 shots in the first period for Yorkton, while Devin Peters stopped 19 of the 20 shots he faced the rest of the way.

The Terriers welcome Battleford tonight.

------------------

The Melville Millionaires got goal from four different sources for the second straight game as they Mils beat the visiting Battlefords North Stars 4-2 on Friday.

Shane Stanicky (pictured) led the way with a goal and 2 assists, while stay-at-home defenseman Jeremie Houde notched his first of the year, and Aaron Decorby and Daniel Hope also lit the lamp. Tyson Melnychuk added a pair of assists, giving him 3 points in his last 2 games.

Only 3 penalties were called in the entire game, and all 6 goals were scored at even strength.

Travis Bosch got the win again, making 34 saves on 36 shots. Melville peppered Battleford goalie Graham Hildebrand with 47 shots.

The Mils board the bus today for a game against the Hawks in Nipawin.

-----------------------

The Wayway Wolverines lost a point in Winkler, falling 3-2 to the Flyers in a shootout.

Jayme Janzen made 44 saves on 46 shots through regulation and overtime for the Wolverines.

Jason Bowles had a goal and an assist.

------------------------

Chris Reimer and Myles Stevens scored for the Swan Valley Stampeders, but the Stamps suffered their fifth straight loss, 5-2 in Selkirk.

Josh Hohn got the start, but got the hook after allowing 3 goals on 6 shots. Chris Ward stopped 36 of 38 the rest of the way.

More Technical Difficulties

But... this time we're prepared. Due to the renovations at Crescent Point Place in Weyburn, there are no phone lines available in the press box. But, we have the capability to do the game via a "cell kit." We'll sacrifice some sound quality, but the game will get on the air as long as cell coverage in the rink is good enough.

Gettin ready for tonight's game, as well as tomorrow afternoon's High School Football broadcast in Preeceville, so I've got about 2 day's work to do in half a day.

So, here's the scouting report for tonight's game, courtesy http://www.sjhl.ca/ .

We're on the air at 7:20 tonight on GX94.

T. Jordan Goes Back to the Dub

The Melville Millionaires are at home to Battleford, looking to extend their lead a top the Sherwood Conference. They'll have to do it without one of their big defenseman, as Tayler Jordan's gone back to the Western Hockey League's Portland Winter Hawks.

"Portland's had a long-awaited ownership change," says Mils' Head Coach/GM Jamie Fiesel. "With ownership change has come other changes, and their coach has decided they're going to have a look at Tayler Jordan, he was Portland property before he came to us he just wasn't happy with the situation there. He's come here, he's developed and they like what they see. It's a hard thing for us as we're going to try and win and continue winning to lose a player of his calibre, but at the same time we're a developmental league, so we're proud of the fact we can move guys back to that league."

Fiesel says he hates to lose Jordan, but the timing of it's not bad, with Terrence Jorgenson making his season debut tonight, and Jordan Reeve doing the same next week.

"Yeah, we told Jorgy he's got a role to fill, so he's excited about that. We do have some backup at that position, so the timing is okay if there is such a thing to lose a good player and a good guy like Tayler. So we wish him all the best and he knows if things don't work out he's got a home here with us."

Raiders See Their Season End

The Yorkton Regional Raider Gridders' season is over, after last night's 40-20 loss to the Notre Dame Hounds in the RIFL 3A Provincial Quarter Final.

The Raiders trailed and trailed 20-12 after the first 2 quarters, and were within one (13-12) late in the 2nd.

The Hounds then pulled away in the second half, with the Raiders' final score coming late in the game.

Yorkton Regional's 3 touchdowns all involved graduating Grade 12's. The first one was a 6-yard run by tailback Riley Hackman (video below, excuse the quality!)... Quarterback Bennett Reusch then recoverd his own short kick right after that major, and drove the ball down field, finding Dustin Anderson with a 26 yard strike.

The fourth quarter touchdown was a flea flicker, where the receiver Anderson tossed a 45 yard bomb to the quarterback Reusch. Reusch then hit Anderson for a 2-point conversion, making the final score Notre Dame 40, Yorkton Regional 20.

Raider Gridders in Playoff Mode

After a 27-11 loss to the Notre Dame Hounds at home last Saturday, the YRHS Raider Gridders play those same Hounds tonight (THU) at Mosaic Stadium. Head Coach Roby Sharpe says today's their second chance, and after today, there are no second chances.

"I woke up, wide awake at about 3:00 this morning, just thinking about things we can do differently, and it's do or die. I told the guys, it's like poker, we've got all our chips on the table, and we've got the cards we've been dealt."

The Raiders have scored just 18 points in their last 2 games, and Sharpe says they've tinkered a little bit to try and get more points on the board.

"In High School football, you have to be able to run the football. We have a tailback in Riley Hackman who's one of the best in the league, and for us not to be able to run the ball, something's wrong. Obviously we have (Bennett) Reusch who throws the ball well too, but at this time of year, when it's getting colder, we have to run the ball, so we've worked a lot on our blocking schemes."

The Raiders have a good contingent of Grade 12s, and Sharpe says playoffs are always a sentimental time for them. It's their last kick at a championship, and it's their last game of their High School careers if they don't come out on top.

"Time goes by so fast. For some of these guys, they're in Grade 12, you remember when they were in Grade 9, and you think, 'where did the four years go?' Here you are in your playoffs game, we've coached them all year, we have our systems in place, we've just gotta go out there, give them both barrels and see what happens."

It's the Raiders and Hounds, 7:15 tonight at Mosaic Stadium in Regina.

Kings 6, Stamps 2 / Mils Back in First / Terriers Still Shut-out in Shoot-outs

Shane Luke set the pace with 2 first period goals as the Dauphin Kings beat the Swan Valley Stampeders for the third time this season, 6-2 at the Centennial Arena.

The Kings also got 2 second period goals from Cam McGeough, while Richard Jodoin and Stu Durston also scored.

The Stampeders got a first period goal from Chris Reimer, who made the score 2-1 at the time, while Galen Matyjanka beat Dauphin's Adrian Rubeniuk to round out the scoring in the third.

Chris Ward allowed all 6 goals on 22 shots... while Josh Hohn played the second half of the game, stopping all 22 he faced.

The loss is the Stampeders' 4th in a row, they're now 4-10-2-and-1.

----------------

Four different goal scorers led the Melville Millionaires over the previously first place Weyburn Red Wings on Wednesday.

With the win, the Mils leap frog the Red Wings by a point, and back into first.

Daniel Hope, Logan Herauf, Kale Dolinski and Tyson Melnychuk scored for the Mils, while Levi Lind set up a pair. Weyburn's Brayden Nargang spoiled Travis Bosch's shutout bid with 5:19 to play.

Bosch made 34 saves on 35 shots in the win. Melville's now got a record of 10-2-1, good for 21 points and an .808 save percentage.

The Mils host Battlefords Friday night before heading to Nipawin on Saturday.

---------------------

The Yorkton Terriers squandered a 3-0 first period lead, and wound up falling 6-5 in a shootout to the visiting Nipawin Hawks.

That's the Terriers' league-leading 4th shootout loss of the season. Infact only 5 of the league's 12 teams have a shootout loss. The Terriers are 0-and-4 in shootouts this season. But, an SOL's better than a plain old 'L'.

The Hawks' 5 regulation goals all game after the 9:31 mark of the second period... Torrie Dyck forced overtime with his second of the night late in the third.

The Terriers got goals from Cody Zubko (2), Clark Byczynski, Torey Stott and Brad Bienvenu. Jordan Menke had 2 assists.

Yorkton's now 7-6-0-4, tied for third with Kindersley, after the Klippers beat the mighty Humboldt Broncos.

Kings (10-4-1) @ Stamps (4-9-2-1)

These two teams are separated by just one position in the standings, but 10 points are between the 4th place Dauphin Kings and 5th place Swan Valley Stampeders.

Swan Valley leading goal scorer Craig Cornelson will miss some time, after breaking is jaw on a hit by Portage forward Cory More over the weekend. Cornelson has 9 goals and 13 points in 15 games. More was handed a 2-game suspension for the hit.

Stampeder goaltender Chris Ward has faced an average of 36 shots per game, and don't let his 3.76 GAA and .895 % fool you. He IS the Stampeders' MVP.

Myles Stevens is right there with him, missing 4 games due to suspension this season but leads the team with 19 points in 12 games. The injured Cornelson is next, followed by defenseman Justin Giesbrecht with 10 pts. The Stamps are looking for more offense, having found the back of the net just 41 times in 16 games (2.56/game).

This is a very good Dauphin Kings' team, and they're probably mad... having lost at home recently to both Neepawa and Winkler. They've scored the second most goals in the Sherwood Division, potting 67 goals in 15 games (4.67/game).

Dauphin's Richard Jodoin rides a 14 game point streak into tonight's game. He has points in every game he's played in this season, with 15-goals and 11-assists over that span. Impressive. And maybe a little surprising considering he's second in the league in PIMs with 86. The Stampeders ended Portage sniper Eric Delong's hefty point streak on Saturday, maybe they can do the same to Jodoin...?

This is a very good Dauphin team, I predicted at the start of the season they'd be fighting it out with Portage for top spot, and they still can. While Dauphin's fourth, they're 2 points out of second and 3 back of first.

It's also a big game for the Stampeders, who take a 3-game losing streak into tonight's game. I know it's early and a lot can change, but the Stamps are 10 points out of a playoff spot in the Sherwood, and one point out of a crossover position into the Addison. It's probably too early to talk about now, but don't be surprised if that comes up more and more as the season progresses.

7:20 Pre Game Show / 7:30 Play by Play from the Centennial Arena in Swan River tonight on GX94.

Back From Ochap

The Ochapowace Thunder picked up their second win of the season last night, beating the Assiniboia Southern Rebels 3-1 on home ice.

After a scoreless first period, Kirk Cote opened the scoring for the Thunder early in the second, but the Rebels tied the affair less than 2 minutes later.
In the third period, Dakota Scott pounced on a rebound and gave Ochapowace the lead back, before Keldon Sanderson scored his team-leading 4th of the year into an empty net in the final minute.

The Thunder are now 2-and-4 in their expansion season.

Their next action's Friday when they host Fort Knox.

--------------------

Anyone else tired of those Humboldt Broncos? Don't get me wrong, they're a first class organization led by a first class guy in Dean Brockman... but for crying out loud... how many times in their now 14-and-1 season have they won in OT or a shootout, or came from behind late to force OT of a SO... and eventually win it. Happened tonight vs Battleford. Somebody beat these guys in OT/SO already!

Would it be crazy to think this Humboldt team could win 50 games in a 56 game schedule? I dunno, seems a little high... but that's a winning percentage of .893. Right now they're at .933. It's hard to maintain that over a grueling season, but still... they're lookin tough.

Butler Talks About Dew Trade

Wayway Coach Barry Butler confirmed Logan Dew will join the Wolverines and will likely play his first game Tuesday when they host Winkler. Here's a portion of today's Wovlerines' Coach's Show.

Alumni Check: Sammartino / Vigier

One of my first posts on this blog was an interview with former Terrier goalie Lynden Sammartino about him going to the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology in Calgary. I went to the SAIT website and didn't see him, but thanks to Facebook, I found out what he's doing.... looks pretty cool!

hey bud hows everything going in y-town? i actually opted out of going to sait. I got a job offer working for the Canucks goalie coach i couldn't turn down! im Working as an Assistant Regional Manager for BC running goalie schools and camps and private lessons out here. So far its been great teaching i'm really enjoying it i am trying to plan maybe a camp sometime in yorkton if we could generated enough interest. I am also trying to plan a trip to come visit i will let you know when that is. Anyways how have you been bud hows the SJ looking this year? - Lynden Sammartino

Last year's MJHL Rookie of the Year and former Swan Valley Stampeder Stephane Vigier looks like he's adjusting to the USHL just fine. In 5 games, Vigier leads the Sioux City Musketeers in scoring, with 1-goal and 8-assists. The Musketeers are 2-2-1, and have scored 20 goals in 5 games... Vigier's been a part of 9 of them. The Notre Dame, MB product had 37 goals and 86 points last season and was a treat to watch. He's expected to spend 2 seasons in Sioux City, before his scholarship at Northern Michigan kicks in at the start of the 2010-11 season.

P.O.W. Honours For Herauf / Janzen

Melville rookie Logan Herauf has been named the SJHL's Player of the Week. Herauf had a breakout game in Flin Flon Friday night, scoring 3-goals and adding 2-assists. He's now got 13-points in 9 games played. Herauf and the Millionaires host Weyburn tomorrow (WED) night.

------------------------

Wayway goaltender Jayme Janzen is the MJHL's Player of the Week. Janzen was 3-and-0 last week, posting a sparkling 1.33 GAA and .955 save percentage in leading his club to three more victories. The native of Plum Coulee owns an overall record of 7-2.

Terrier Coach's Show

Coach Ed Zawatsky feels goaltending's coming around again after a bit of a dry spell earlier in the month, and says 20-year-old forward Scott Jackson's likely returning to the team shortly. Jackson was traded to his home town of Salmon Arm, B.C. last year.

Monday... Meh

Last week went so fast when Monday was a holiday. I think we should skip that dreadful day every week. Plus there's rarely any sports on Mondays which limits the amount of things to blog about or put on the radio sports.

Went to the Rider game yesterday... a little chilly but not bad. I thought Hamilton's Nick Setta knocked that 54-yarder through at the end of the game. He hammered it but pushed it just to the right. Thankfully our Luca Congi made a 55-yarder in the 2nd quarter, which wound up being the difference as he bounced it off the crossbar and over.

Once we get through Monday, things will get busy. PJHL game in Ochapowace Tuesday, MJHL in Swan Valley Wednesday, probably go with the YRHS football team to Regina for their playoff game Thursday, SJHL Yorkton @ Weyburn on Friday, and most likely a Provincial High School Football game in Preeceville on Saturday.

Tampa Bay Rays are in the World Series. Good for them. They stayed patient, built through the draft, and are now set up to have a dynasty if they can keep all their young talent happy and for relatively cheap money for the next few years.

I'll post the Terriers' Coach's Show later this morning. Here are some Sunday scores.

Another Win Over Winnipeg for Wayway

The Wayway Wolverines beat both Winnipeg teams over the weekend, and both 4-1. The Blues on Friday, and the Saints tonight (SAT).

Jason Bowles has re-taken top spot in the MJHL scoring race, getting his 32nd and 33rd points with a goal and an assist. Paul Marcoux scored a pair, Ryan Regel had a goal and Cody Danychuk had 2 helpers.

Rookie Carey Dyck got the start against the Addison Division first place Saints, making 22 saves on 23 shots.

The Wolverines continue to roll, now with a record of 12-3-1.

-----------------

The Swan Valley Stampeders came away from Portage with no points in 2 weekend games. After Friday's 7-2 loss, the Stamps fell 4-1 on Saturday.

Andrew Bzdel got Swan's lone goal from Ryan Marshall and Ryan Griffiths.

One positive, was the Stamps held Terrier sniper Eric Delong off the score sheet for just the second time all season. Delong had a hat trick the night before.

Josh Hohn played goal for the Stampeders, making 21 saves. The Stamps managed just 19 shots on goal.

------------------

The Melville Millionaires wound up with a split in Flin Flon, losing 4-1 to the Bombers on Saturday after Friday's 6-5 win.

Shane Stanicky scored short-handed from Daniel Hope, while Travis Bosch stopped 32 of 35 shots.

The loss was the second in regulation for the Mils this season.

------------------

The Yorkton Terriers were the only GX94 team NOT involved in a 4-1 game on Saturday. They fell 3-2 in Weyburn.

Evan Neibrandt and Jordan Menke each had a goal and an assist, while the Byczynski brothers Clark and Kirk each had one assist.

Jordan Barry was back in goal, making 27 saves on 30 Red Wings' shots.

The Red Wings jump into first in the Sherwood. They're 10-and-5.

------------------

How 'bout those Battlefords North Stars? The Stars scored SIX third period goals to beat Estevan 8-5. Mitch Wall had 5 points in the win.

Battleford picked up their fifth win of the season, equalling last year's win total.

Dew To Wayway

You may have heard the rumour... it's official now. Yorkton's traded 20-year-old forward Logan Dew to the Wayway Wolverines for future considerations. Dew had 4-goals and 7-points in 11-games this season in Yorkton.

High School Pig Skin From Saturday

East Central 9-Man

Melville over Fort Qu'Appelle 29-0

Canora over Swan Valley 42-35

Melville wins the league title. Melville and Canora advance to provincials which begin next Saturday.

North East 9-Man

Wynyard 18 Foam Lake 48

Humboldt vs Tisdale... no score to report.

IF first place Humboldt won... here are next week's provincial matchups:

Foam Lake Panthers @ Melville Cobras

Canora Cougars @ Humboldt Mohawks

RIFL 12-Man

Notre Dame 27 Yorkton 11

Raiders finish the regular season 3-and-4. They faced (4-3) Notre Dame again next Thursday in Regina to open the playoffs.

Post Game Comments with Raider Head Coach Roby Sharpe

Portage 7, Swan Valley 2

This was a tough one for the Stamps.

Myles Stevens scored late in the first to tie the game 1-1 through 20 minutes, but the Terriers stormed back with 6 unanswered, 3 in the second, 3 more in the third, before Swan's Vincein Scott rounded out the scoring late to make it a 7-2 final.

Eric Delong is insane. Scored 3 Friday night, he's got 17-goals and 31-points in 13 games.

------------

Wayway won their third straight, 4-1 over the visiting Winnipeg South Blues. Paul Marcoux had 1-goal and 2-assists, while Jason Bowles scored twice. Jayme Janzen stopped 34 of 35 shots for the win.

-------------

The Yorkton Terriers got a point from the Humboldt Broncos, but the Broncos got two. The Terriers lost 3-2 in a shootout, with Shawn Shackleton scoring his first SJHL goal in the first period, and Kevin Stringfellow forced overtime with a late third period goal. Second straight game Stringer's done that. Devin Peters made 29 saves through regulation and overtime.

-------------

The Player of the Night in either league was Melville's Logan Herauf (pictured). The 18-year-old rookie had 5-points... 3-goals and 2-assists in the Mils' 6-5 victory over the Flin Flon Bombers. All 3 of his goals and one assist came in the first period alone. The Mils led 4-1 after one, but the Bombers mounted a comeback and led 5-4 early in the third. Tyler Murray scored twice 6 minutes apart in the final frame to restore the lead and get the two points.

Both teams used both their goalies in what was a good old fashioned shoot-out. Flin Flon's Calvin Bartel was yanked late in the first after Melville went up 4-1... Ryan Kerpan played the rest of the time. Melville's Travis Bosch was peppered with shots, and was also pulled after the Bombers got their third period lead. Riley Hengen didn't allow a goal in relief.

Let's Talk High School Football

Tomorrow (SAT) is a BIG day for local High School Football.

EAST CENTRAL 9-MAN SEMI-FINALS

I like covering the East Central 9-Man Conference because all 6 teams (Yorkton, Melville, Canora, Esterhazy, Fort Qu'Appelle, Swan River) are in the listening area. So I get to talk to all the coaches, and of course we run our East Central 9-Man reports Wednesdays at 9:45. I always post the most recent show on the High School Football page. This week's guest was Fort Qu'Appelle Marauders' Head Coach Kevin Baron. To the best of my knowledge there's no website for the league, so I created a page to try and keep up to date with the schedule/standings, etc. If you've never seen it, here's the link . Anyhow, here's a little preview for each Semi Final matchup based on those numbers.

Canora Cougars (3) @ Swan Valley Tigers (2)
Saturday 2:00 (MB Time)

Tigers

* 4-1 record during the regular season, earning them a bye to the semi finals as the second seed.

* Offense was their strength this season, leading the league with 192 points scored in 5 games (38.4/game). However, that side of the ball suffered 3 key injuries in their first place showdown against Melville to wrap up the regular season 2 weeks ago. The Tigers will be without their top 2 RB's, and one of their starting TE's for this one. All 3 are Grade 12's.

* Swan Valley's defense gave up the fourth fewest points in the 6 team league, surrending 128 points from the opposition (25.6/game). Their points for and against ratio was second best in the league (+64).

Cougars

* Canora went 3-2 in the regular season, good for third place. They had to get by the (2-3) Yorkton Sacred Heart Saints (34-18) in the quarter finals to make the final four.

* They didn't score a pile of points, but gave up even less. The Cougars put up 105 points this season (21/game), while surrendering 103 (20.6/game). Their offense ranked them fourth in the EC9M Conference, while their stingy defense was second best.

Head-to-Head

On September 26th in Canora, the Tigers beat the Cougars 20-16 on a last-minute touchdown.

----------------------

Fort Qu'Appelle Marauders (6) @ Melville Cobras (1)
Saturday 1:00

Cobras

* By far the best points for and against ratio in the league (+125). Second best offense, scoring 181 points (36.2/game).

* Defense wins championships, and the Cobras boasted by far the most smothering 'D' in the regular season, giving up just 56 points in 5 games (11.2/game). 27 of them came from Swan Valley in the last game of the regular season. Before that, the Cobras had given up a microscopic 29 pts in 4 games (7.25).

* Melville hasn't played since that game against Swan Valley on October 3rd. Their 5-0 record earned them a first round bye.

* If the Cobras win tomorrow, they would automatically clinch the league title and take the #1 seed from the EC Conference into provincials which start Oct 25.

Marauders

* Wasn't the greatest of regular seasons for the guys from Fort Qu'Appelle, ranking last in both offense and defense, but they won the game that counted last week, as the (0-5) Marauders beat the (1-4) Esterhazy Warriors 22-16 to advance.

* Fort Qu'Appelle scored 83 points (16.6/game) and gave up 230 (46/game) this season.

Head-to-Head

On September 25th, the Cobras beat the Marauders 35-9.

---------------------

NORTH EAST 9-MAN SEMI-FINALS

Two more local area teams square off in one of the two semis with the second place Foam Lake Panthers hosting the third place Wynyard Golden Bears.

The 1-4 matchup has the Humboldt Mohawks on home field vs the Tisdale Tornadoes. I've heard from a few coaches in the East Central Conference that Humboldt's the real deal and the favourite this year. Assuming they get by Tisdale, Humboldt will host the #2 seed from the EC Conference, which will be the winner of the Swan Valley / Canora game, as long as Melville wins their semi and takes the #1 seed. Confusing? Lots of words, but easy to follow when you look at the draws.

RIFL 12-Man

The Yorkton Regional Raider Gridders (3-3) round out their regular season at home tomorrow against the Notre Dame Hounds (3-3) at 2:00 @ Century Field. It'll be a playoff preview, as the two teams will finish 4th and 5th regardless of who wins. And with all playoff games in Regina, home field's not even on the line tomorrow, but for the Grade 12's it means a lot, with it being their last home game. To play another home game, the Raiders would have to win the Regina City Final and host the Provincial Final. There'll be some big dogs in their way who have something to say about that, ie: Weyburn, O'Neill, but anything's possible, the Raiders are better than a .500 team too.

6-Man

Since I'm talking about all tomorrow's stuff, I figure I should toss in that TODAY, it's the final day of regular season games in the East Central 6-Man Conference. 4 games, they all start at 4:00.

Southey @ Preeceville*
Kelvington @ Carrot River
Hudson Bay @ Raymore
Ituna @ Kelliher

*Preeceville will host Prince Albert Collegiate in the first round of Provincials Saturday, October 25th. I shouldn't say for sure, but don't be surprised if that game's on the radio. I had a chance to do a game in Preeceville this time last year and it went over really well.

Stampeders Coach's Show

Head Coach/GM Guy Vestby talked about the outstanding play of goaltender Chris Ward in their last 3 games, last night's loss to Wayway and previewed a pair of games in Portage this weekend. Friday's game can be heard on GX94. 7:20 Pre Game Show, 7:30 Play by Play MB time.

Terriers Come From Behind / Canada West Roster

For the first 40 minutes, it looked like the Yorkton Terriers' losing streak might hit 4, but a thrilling third period and overtime quelled any of those thoughts.

The Terriers trailed the visiting Melfort Mustangs 2-0 after the first, and it stayed that way until early in the third. Corey Silverson scored 2:08 into the final frame, and Kevin Stringfellow forced overtime with just 29 seconds left.

Then, with 18 seconds to play in overtime, Derek Derkach (pictured) beat David Tetreault to give the Terriers a much-needed 2 points.

Derek Serdachny had 2 assists on the night, while Devin Peters made 23 saves in the win. The Terriers out-shot the Mustangs 37-25.

---------------

Cody Danychuk and Dave Lamouche each had 1 goal and 1 assist as the Wayway Wolverines beat the Swan Valley Stampeders 3-1 on the road. Paul Marcoux added an empty netter, while team scoring leader Jason Bowles registered one assist.

Chris Reimer scored the Stampeders' lone marker. The Stamps were out-shot 37-24 by the Wolverines. Chris Ward made 34 saves in the loss, Jayme Janzen got the win with a 23 save performance.

----------------

Six SJHLers and two MJHLers made the roster for Team Canada West at the 2008 World Junior 'A' Challenge. Unfortunately no one from our local area teams made the cut. I really thought Chris Ward had a great shot after shutting down the opposition at the intra-squad game last week in Yorkton.

G- Andrew Bodnarchuk, Humboldt
D- Michael Young, Flin Flon
D- Tommy Brown, Mefort (played on last year's team)
F- Cole Wilson, Flin Flon
F- Rylan Schwartz, Notre Dame
F- Jaden Schwartz, Notre Dame

D- Scott Macaulay, Winnipeg Saints
F- Tim Hayduk, Winnipeg Saints

Mils Coach's Show / Ochap @ Fort Knox

Blogger video player's still a little goofy and I've got a feeling many people don't sit and wait 2 minutes for the dang things to load. I did post today's East Central 9-Man Report with Fort Qu'Appelle Marauders Coach Kevin Baron. It's available on the High School Football page. But, like old times, I'm gonna write out today's Millionaires' Coach's Show with Jamie Fiesel. Here goes.

CS: Coach, a 5-3 win over Melfort last night, and 2 wins over Yorkton this past weekend. Three fairly similar games where you had to come from behind in the third period each time.

JF: Yeah, you know I like the wins right now, they're important for us. I think our game's slowly getting better, and we're doing more things we like to see, but in the end, coming back in the third period three times in a row, it's just hard on my hair line is what it is.

CS: So that's why you're going a little thin up there!

JF: That is exactly why, and the guys know it, they were laughing at the end of the game that they're doing it on purpose. But we're finding ways to win and that's important right now. I didn't like how we played in Yorkton I think we were lucky to come away with a win, we were out-shot. At home, we had phases where we played well, but give Yorkton credit, they were in the game and could have easily taken points out of both games, we found a way to win. Then last night I felt we had a lot of chances again and played a little better, each game we're getting a little better and the important thing is we're getting those wins which are so important in the end.

CS: Travis Bosch got a seat on the bench for the first time all season last night, Riley Hengen got the start, and the win, 27 saves, how was his debut?

JF: It was good. Anytime you can come in and get a win. I think he'll feel more comfortable as games go on, and being the rookie in there on a new team I thought he did real well, especially considering we had a lot of penalty kills last night, too many if you want to win a hockey game, and sometimes your best penalty killer has to be your goalie so he stood in there well.

CS: Logan Herauf got off to a bit of slow start, but 7 of his 8 points have come in his last 4 games, he had a great weekend against Yorkton (5 pts), and last night as well (1 goal).

JF: He's a type of player, we know he has a lot of skill. He's working hard to try and pick up other areas of his game. He's the type of guy who anytime, he can burn you. You won't see him for a while, and then all of a sudden he'll have the puck and it's in the net. He had a wide open net on a powerplay last night too and hit the crossbar. He's a dangerous guy, he can put pucks in the net and he makes plays for us, and those kind of players we need.

CS: At the start of the season, you were thinking mid-October for Terrence Jorgenson, and today's exactly the middle of October, is he close to coming back?

JF: He's close, but it's not gonna be this weekend, but next week, we've got a bunch of games again, he might be able to step in. With (Jordan) Reeve, he's another guy we're waiting on, his progress is a little slower. He's kind of like those Saskatchewan Roughrider fibula guys, and not healing quite as fast as we'd like, so we're going to be cautious with him. Maybe Terrence can get in next week, but we're going to take it day by day.

CS: Way up north in Flin Flon for two Friday and Saturday. It looks like a two horse race in the Itech, almost a one horse race with Humboldt pulling away, but Flin Flon's certainly right there, they just got Reid MacLeod back, so it looks like a dangerous team you're going to see.

JF: They're a very dangerous team, and in their building, we've had success up there before, but last year we went in there and both times had leads in either the first period or second period, and within a 10 minute span basically got blown out of the rink. They're an explosive team, their fans get going and they get going, it's hard to stop the bleeding. We're going to have to play a 60 minute game both times up there to get points, it's a big weekend for us. The tests don't get much harder than in Flin Flon. It's a good time for us to be tested again, take our big record on the road and see if we can get some points.

---------------------------

We're on the air in Fort Qu'Appelle tonight as Fort Knox (3-1) welcomes the expansion Ochapowace Thunder (1-3) in Prairie Junior Hockey League action. Game time is 8:00 at the Rexentre.

Colour man Brendan Wagner won't be making the trip as this is his last day of work at GX94... he starts at News Talk 650 in Saskatoon next week. Apparently he's "packing" tonight... pff. Best of luck B-Wags!

I'll ask it again... who wants to do colour????

Hometown Kid Aaron Decorby (pictured) scored a powerplay goal with 1:00 left and the Melville Millionaires went on to beat the Melfort Mustangs 5-3, giving the Mils sole possession of first place in the SJHL Sherwood Conference.

Kale Dolinski scored in the first period while Tayler Jordan added another in the second.

The third period saw Melfort take their first lead of the game, and it stayed 3-2 for 10 minutes, until Logan Herauf tied it, Decorby gave them the lead, and Daniel Hope scored on an empty net with a second to play.

Decorby, Hope and Dolinski all had a goal and an assist on the night.

Riley Hengen made his Mils debut between the pipes and picked up the victory.

Game Sheet

Melville's got a one point lead atop the Sherwood Conference over both Kindersley and Weyburn, with games in hand on both clubs. Their record's now 8-1-1, while their home record remains a perfect 5-0.

The Mils board the bus for Flin Flon this Friday and Saturday.

SJHL Defenseman of the Week: Curtis Beech

Millionaires 88 D Curtis Beech (Calgary AB) registered one assist in two games played last week, but it was his play away from the puck and in front of his own net that led to him being chosen as the Melville Player Of The Game on Saturday night against Yorkton. At 6'5” 230 lbs, Beech has tremendous size and strength, which poses a big problem for opposing forwards.Runners-up: Mitch Stretch, Notre Dame; Tanner Vandesype, Humboldt; Greg Coburn, Yorkton.

Thanksgiving Thoughts

Alright, haven't posted since the Friday Yorkton/Melville game. Since that game (which never made it to air), I called a Senior Hockey fundraiser game in Grenfell on Sunday afternoon, and, everything went off with out a hitch. Relieving for me, because I was worried the problem was on my end Friday, since I've never had a problem at FAA in Yorkton. But if the phone lines in Grenfell, SK work fine, I guess my gear isn't an issue. Still, I've gotta find a game to make up, and even though it involved Melville AND Yorkton, it was technically a Mils broadcast, being that they were the road team, so it'll be a Melville game that gets added at a future date.

I kind of let Thanksgiving pass by without much thought this year. I wasn't able to get out of town for the weekend, which meant no turkey dinner (I did just pick up a Turkey Breast "Sub of the Day" at Subway, if that counts!), so I guess it didn't feel like Thanksgiving. But the parents came down for Friday's game and stayed over, and the better half, who's now interning at Carleton High School in Prince Albert, made it down from Saturday until today, so it all worked out.

But I, and we, certainly have a lot to be thankful for. You may not like anyone you see on the ballot for tomorrow's (TUE) federal election, but at least whoever wins will run a democracy. Sure, it sucks that we got the first dump of snow the past few days, but the +30 days aren't THAT far away. The Riders were a joke today, and I yelled and swore at the TV several times before switching to baseball... but, it IS just a game. If a football game's the biggest of my worries I've got it pretty good. Infact, I said it while doing colour with Randy Atkinson on TV for Friday's game... he was saying I'm the voice of four Junior 'A' teams, occasionally two Junior 'B' teams, and an unknown amount of Senior Hockey and High School Football teams that pop up around this time of year. And I said, 'yeah, but not too many people can say their job involves going to a rink almost everyday for 7 months a year, so I can't really complain.' Yeah, it's lots of hours and a lot of bus trips, and I'll never make a million bucks, but I legitimately love what I do, so that's another thing to be thankful for. I'm also fortunate enough to have a great family and soon-to-be in-law family, parent's who've been married for 25 years, 2 sisters that drive me nuts but are alright, and all four grandparents still living and married for something like 56 and 46 years.

Anyway, that's my sappy Thanksgiving talk... promise we can talk sports again tomorrow!

No Radio...

Yeah, we never got on the air tonight.

Nothing ticks a radio guy off more than that.

Complications with phone lines... tried 6 phone jacks in the booth and 2 in the mezzanine level and couldn't get a dial tone.

So, I did colour with Randy Atkinson on Access 7 and called in reports on my cell phone during intermissions.

I REALLY wish I could have been on the air because it was a GREAT game.

Melville scored 2 third period goals to come from behind and beat Yorkton 4-3.

Three players got their first SJHL goals in this game. Melville's Logan Herauf and Yorkton's Kurtis Decker in the first period, and the game winning goal in the third, and probably the nicest goal I've seen this year, by Michael Rogoschewsky. Rogy made an inside-outside, one-handed move on the Terrier defenseman before wiring a slapshot over the glove of Jordan Barry.

The Terriers had a flurry of chances late in the game with the goalie out and ended up with a 6-on-4 powerplay couldn't couldn't find the tying goal.

Aside from the 3 first time goal scorers, Levi Lind and Kale Dolinski scored for Melville (6-1-0-1), while Kevin Stringfellow and Cody Zubko found net net for the Terriers (6-4-0-2).

Kindersley lost to Weyburn tonight, which REALLY tightens up the Sherwood. The points in the standings go 16-14-13-12-12-8. Melville's got the best winning percentage at .812% but sit third, having played just 8 games compared to Yorkton (12) and Kindersley (11).

All indications say the Yorkton/Melville 8 game season series will be tight again this year.

Game 2 goes tonight (SAT) at the Stadium.

Technical Difficulties

As of right now (6:45)... there are no working phone lines inside Farrell Agencies Arena. Apparently the Gallagher Centre only has so many lines to go around and the lines were switched at some point during the week and not switched back, and the gentleman who's able to do that's not here and hasn't been reached by phone. Unless something changes quick there'll be no broadcast tonight. AH!!!!

Round 1 of 8 / Friday Sked

(I'm pretty sure I'm the only person I know with BOTH these jersies in the same living room!)

**Our second intermission guest tonight will be Colorado Avalanche defenseman Brett Clark. Sneak peek available by clicking on the Mils 100 Years of Memories link ----->

GAME NOTES

YOR
- Defenseman GREG COBURN rides an 8-game point streak into tonight's game. He's got one point in each of his last 8 games, totalling 2-goals and 6-assists during that span.

YOR- Rookie TOREY STOTT leads the Terriers in scoring with 10-points (4-6) in 11 games. Stott and defenseman Clark Byczynski were in the Canada West Evaluation camp this week.

YOR- Rhien product EVAN NEIBRANDT leads the team with 4 goals and 4 points at home. Those 4 goals have all come in his last 3 home games. Overall, he's notched 5 goals in his last 6 games.

YOR- Preeceville's CODY ZUBKO's nearly equalled last year's point totals already, and it's interesting how his numbers have flip-flopped over the last 2 years. In 2007-08 he had 11-goals and 2-assists. This season? 1-goal, 8-assists.

YOR- BRETT DERKACH from Ituna is expected to be in the lineup for the first time since scoring his first SJHL over the weekend in La Ronge. Derkach had a goal and an assist that night.

MVL- Goalie TRAVIS BOSCH has still played EVERY MINUTE between the pipes for the Millionaires. Despite playing a league-low 7 games as a team, Bosch is among the league leaders in Minutes Played (421). Not to mention Wins (5), GAA (2.00), SV% (.938) and SO (1).

MVL- KALE DOLINSKI leads the team with 10 points. Only two of them have come with the powerplay.

MVL- Hometown kid AARON DECORBY has a team-high 5 goals. He also appeared in the Canada West Evaluation Camp in Yorkton this week.

MVL- The Millionaires have SIX games in hand on the Estevan Bruins. Estevan's a game under .500 and in third place. Melville's 4 games above .500 and in fourth. The Mils do have the second best winning percentage in the Sherwood Conference (.786), just behind first place Kindersley (.800). Yorkton's third at (.636).

MVL- The Mils had Yorkton's number last year, going 6-and-2 in the regular season, 4-and-0 in the playoffs, 10-and-2 all year, and have won the last 8 head to head meetings (last 4 games of regular season + playoffs).

7:20 Pre Game Show, 7:30 Play by Play on GX94 tonight, bring your radio to the rink!

Melville Coach's Show

Jamie Fiesel talked about his and Aaron Decorby's experience at the Canada West Evaluation camp, the acquistion of goaltender Riley Hengen, Saturday's disappointing loss in Notre Dame, and looked ahead to this weekend's home and home with the Terriers.

Wednesday Goings-On / Terrier Game Change

The Leader Post's Rob Vanstone gave me, and the station a nice plug in his column in yesterday's (TUE) paper. He was mentioning NewsTalk 980 in Regina debuted a noon sports cast this week. And went on to say GX94 in Yorkton has the longest noon cast in the listening area, 7 minutes from 12:08 to 12:15 where Craig Stein covers all the bases. That's a long time, and I admit there are days I'm struggling to fill it, but some days I have to shorten it to fit everything too! I try to fill that 7 minutes with as much local as possible, but it's inevitable you need some national (MLB, NFL, NHL, etc) to fill that kind of time.

Ego check: This blog usually gets a little better than 200 hits per day during the week, and a little under 200 on the weekends, and I'm happy with that, I thought if I got 100 per day that'd be great. Know what Voice of the Riders Rod Pedersen got yesterday after breaking the story about the Calgary Stampeders' alleged abuse of officials after last week's game? NEARLY FIVE THOUSAND! 4,865 to be exact. The guy averages well over 2,000 a day and is closing in on ONE MILLION.

Here's what's up today...

Other notes....

**The Thanksgiving Monday game between the Yorkton Terriers and Nipawin Hawks at Farrell Agencies Arena at 2:00 has been moved to Wednesday, October 22nd at 7:30. I don't think too many people will complain about that. It is Thanksgiving, and, oh ya, the Riders play the Stamps at 2:30.

**The East Central 9-Man Quarter-Final game between the Canora Cougars and Sacred Heart Saints originally set for Friday has been moved to tomorrow (THU). The winner faces Swan Valley in the semi final. Fort Qu'Appelle and Esterhazy will still meet on Friday. Canora Coach Darryl Dickson was our guest on the East Central 9-Man report. I'll post the conversation on the High School Football page soon if it's not there already.

Observations

Notre Dame should be proud. The Schwartz brothers, Esposito and Stretch all have legit shots at cracking the roster. Schappert from Selkirk really stood out for me as well. On the backend, I liked Flin Flon's Michael Young and Weyburn's Rhys Thomas a lot. It was one of the best hockey games I've seen in person. This wasn't an "All-Star type" game. These guys are fighting for jobs. There was no stupid stuff, and the pace was unbelieveable, back and forth, outstanding goaltending by all four guys. Call me biased for doing games for Swan Valley, but I'd pick Chris Ward as the top goalie in that game. You could tell he was in the zone, very focused and wants to be on Team Canada West. Other local guys, Clark Byczynski had a goal for Team Green, and also crunched Estevan's Brody Haygarth into the boards on a nice one-on-one hit. Unfortunately Haygarth suffered what's believed to be a broken arm. Not good for Bruins' fans, he's a dandy to watch, even last year as a 17-year-old. Fellow Terrier Torey Stott was solid at both ends of the rink. Melville's Aaron Decorby picked up an assist and a shootout goal. He had his own cheering section of Mils players and trust me, they loved it when he potted that one on the deke, and proceeded to run his face into the crossbar and knock the net off, but it counted. Wayway's Ryan Duhaime had a feisty game, definitely one of the hardest working guys out there.

Idiot me planned on talking to Decorby, Byczynski and Ward after. I went to Team Black's room to get Decorby, reached into my bag... my mic was in there, but the recorder was not. I know it's still plugged into my computer at work. That's why I'm typing so much, don't have players' comments to make up the space.

Anyway, that's all for today!
