Just An Update

The blog has been slow-going of late, and so has the local sports scene. But here's an attempt to muster up SOMETHING!

-- The WMBL's Melville Millionaires have lost 2 straight games for the first time since June 18th and 20th. They'd won 12 of their last 13 before dropping games this Sunday and Monday. The Yorkton Cardinals up and down season continues. They've now lost 4 straight, after they seemed to be back on track. Someone's mini-slide will end tonight (TUE) when the Cards visit the Mils (7:05, Pirie Field).

-- The South East Senior Baseball League has shrunk from 6 teams to 5 as the league nears its post-season. The Canora Supers, who've been in the league final in each of the past two years, winning it in 2008, have folded for the rest of this season, due to a lack of players. Longtime Supers' player Ryan Kitchen says "We had a game against Willowbrook last Wednesday, and only 7 of our regular players showed up, so we basically pulled 2 guys off the street so we could play, and you can't go on like that. It's not fair to the other teams, it's not fair to the fans, and it's not fair to the players who ARE showing up. We looked around after the Willowbrook game, realized we wouldn't have 9 guys for playoffs, and, it was tough to make the call, but we had to." The SESBL was going to have a tournament in Melville from July 23-25 to decide a league champ, but now with just 5 teams, they'll have the 4th and 5th place teams play a one-game "Survivor Game," with the winner playing the 1st place team in a Best-of-Three Semi-Final, while the 2nd and 3rd place teams do the same. The league final will be a Best-of-Five.

-- Yorkton Terrier fans might remember Nolan Souchotte. The La Ronge Ice Wolves' forward is heading into his 20-year-old season, and after an SJHL Championship in the spring, he's teaming up with Grayson gal Nicole Rieger to bike across Saskatchewan from July 17-22, to support Mandi Schwartz's battle with Leukemia and to fund Cancer Research. Head to http://www.cyclingforacure.com/ for more info on how YOU can support them.

-- Melville's Jon Paradis and the rest of Team Saskatchewan are on the right track at the Football Canada Cup in Wolfville, NS. Team Sask beat Manitoba 26-15 on Sunday, and are off to the Semis against B.C. tomorrow (WED). Paradis says "Wearing that Green & White was unreal. I had goosebumps when we took the field for the first time, seeing such a good crowd, and most of the parents came down for the week. Our defense shut them down and our offense was there when they had to be."

-- Yorkton's getting set to host a couple Provincial Baseball tournaments this month. The Bantam 'AA' event is here this Friday-Sunday (16-18th). Junior 'AAA' Provincials come to Yorkton July 30-August 1.

-- This hardcore Rider supporter has only watched one half of one game on TV so far. Not my fault though... the power went out on Canada Day at our place because of the big storm, and we had a wedding to go to this past Saturday. Managed to make it back for the 2nd half... and I gotta say, either the Riders are absolute world-beaters, or the BC Lions will have their worst finish in YEARS. Wes Cates ran the ball at will, and the Rider D-Line was all over Casey Printers and Travis Lulay. The Lions looked VERY confused on offense, with the Riders routinely showing blitz with 7 or 8 guys, sometimes they'd all come, sometimes 4 or 5 would back off! I do have tickets for the Riders/Eskimos this Saturday!

-- It's July 13th and I've yet to swing a golf club.

-- At home, baby Bailey is 8 weeks old today... she's got another routine doctor's appointment, where they'll weigh/measure her today. I'm expecting she'll be 12+ lbs, and probably 2 feet tall! Last few days she's had rough days and good nights, which I guess is better than good days and rough nights that she had for a week before. Hoping she's starting to realize what night and day are!
