Bit Of A Shocker... Terriers Lose 95K After Finals Run

I wasn't able to cover the Yorkton Terriers' AGM, as I had one of my new dad duties (baby's baptism classes), but I was thinking ahead of time, 'this should be an extremely positive meeting... after all those soldout playoff games, they woulda made big money this year!'

Not so. The Terriers lost $95,183.

Some of the main reasons...

Terrier Home Lotto: Made $72,000 less than in 2009

Equipment/Stick Bill: Increased $66,000 from 2009

Season Tickets: Brought in $23,000 less than in 2009

Game Day Tickets: $30,000 less than in 2009

Coaching Change: Staff salaries increased $38,000 from 2009
(Ed Zawatsky was paid until the end of the year, + everyone else's salaries)

As expected, Lyle Walsh and Larry Wells accepted new 2-year terms on the executive. Doug Bullis, Ward Brown and Ron Pasloski will all fulfill the second years of their 2-year terms, and the only new member to come forward was Gerry Smysnuik. That has the board with 6 members, 3 short of where they'd like to be. Of course they were hoping for more new blood to come forward, or accept nominations, but they're confident they'll be able to get a few more on board before the start of the season.

**Blogger note.... I'm SHOCKED that after having 2200 fans watch the league final that the Terriers can only round up 6 board members. Not calling anyone out, because I know everyone's busy with personal lives, etc. But when I go to a place like Weyburn and see a young President, young board members, it makes a person wonder what happened to that age bracket around here and what that means for the future of our local teams. These guys aren't going to volunteer their time forever... some 25-40 year olds need to step up!!

My colourman Clark Stork DID cover the meeting (thanks!), and spoke with last year's President Lyle Walsh and GM Don Chesney. Walsh will be back on the board, but official titles have yet to be appointed.

Head Coach Trent Cassan also announced last year's leading scorer Jordan Menke committed to the University of Wisconsin-Superior for the upcoming season.

Some of the hidden expenses are not included, which the terriers did alot of. How much did they play some of their players this year?? Tendler, McDermont??

NOT SURPRIZED AT THE TERRIER SHORTFALL.. MAIN REASON IS THE DECISION NOT TO FIRE ED ZAWATSKY AT THE END OF THE 2009 SEASON. HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE HAD SEEN ENOUGH OF EDDIES WAYS AND DIDNT RENEW SEASONS TICKETS---RESULTING IN POORER ATTENDANCE, 50/50, ETC, ETC. AS A PARENT OF 2 FORMER TERRIER PLAYERS, I LIKE THE DIRECTION OF THE TEAM..LOOK FOR BETTER RESULTS AT THE 2011 AGM

well I hope they don't raise their ticket prices. 15 dollars is too expensive already!

Definitely surprising to an outside observer like myself...

hopefully things turn around financially.

Hey Craig, just curious, I've only been faithfully following the terriers for three years--unfaithfully for many more..lol..anyway...typically, who makes up the board? Are there 'unknowns' often on board? I am very interested in getting involved, but am intimidated by the big names that i've heard in the community for years.

Anyone and everyone can run for executive. You're right, alot of the members lately seem to be business owners, etc, and I'm not sure why that is, but you certainly don't have to be to put your name forward.

It seems their treasurer is often a professional accountant, as was the case with Bill Wright, and I wouldn't doubt Gerry Smysnuik takes it over, as they both work at Parker Quine.

But if you're interested I'd recommend contacting Lyle Walsh. He manages the radio station and the number there is 782-2256, and his email is lwalsh@harvardbroadcasting.com

Thanks for the msg!
