Boechler in a Battle

With permission from the Boechler family, I am passing on information that Luke, a 19-year-old goalie with the Yorkton Terriers, was diagnosed with Leukemia late last week, and is beginning treatment in Regina today (Monday, February 8).

The following is a portion of an email from Luke's dad Brian:

Luke is now in the Pasqua Hospital (in Regina) - feeling quite well and in good spirits - awaiting chemotherapy which begins (today, Monday). Doctors tell us the first two rounds of chemo will run over the next 42 days (21 days each) and further treatment/action will depend on how he responds once this chemo is completed. The course of the treatment is likely to run for close to 6 months - and it is possible that he may be required to stay in hospital throughout.

Our family would like to thank you all for your kind thoughts and prayers.

May God's blessings be with you all - and if you find the time, please sneak in a little prayer for Luke.

- Brian & Jeannine Boechler

---------------------------

Luke's 19 years old, and in outstanding shape, being a triple-sport athlete, excelling in hockey, football and baseball, and that can only help him in this fight.

The guy STILL shares the SJHL lead in shutouts (as of Feb/8) with 3 this season (tied with Weyburn's A.J. Whiffen, Flin Flon's Matt Weninger, and La Ronge's Adam Bartko), and has played FAR less minutes than the three goalies he's tied with. He's a great goalie and an even better young man.

This is bigger than hockey, and I encourage anyone reading... Terrier fans, Melville fans, or anyone else regardless of your affiliation to leave a comment at the bottom of this posting, and I'll make sure Luke gets the link and can view them. Of course, you don't HAVE TO leave your name, but I think it'd be nice to at least include a first name and where you're from, to make it more personal.

Luke's status on Facebook says: 'You will not win, because I will not lose.'

Please join me with your thoughts and prayers for Luke and his parents, brother and sister through this time.

Luke's been a great teammate and friend of mine for years. He's a hard working guy who battles hard every game, every at bat, every play. Luke is the perfect example of what a teammate should be, and also what a friend should be.

Hi everyone!

Thank you for the amazing messages thus far! I have been checking every so often and reading them to Luke in his hospital room. Craig, thank you for the wonderful post about Luke - we all teared up! Luke's status on facebook fits him so well. He is fighting hard and WILL beat it!

We will have LOVE4LUKE bracelets available soon for anyone who wants to show support. I told him I will have half of yorkton wearing one (along with my entire school in Calgary!) to show him how many people love him and support him. Please do not feel obligated as it's simply to show that we all care. I will let everyone who is interested know when they are available (should be early next week)

We truly appreciate all of your thoughts, prayers, and kind words! We would like to know everyone's full name if possible so we can relay the messages properly to Luke.

Watching you play last year with The Royals was a complete treat in that league final. Someone said back then that you were not going to play junior A because you were going to go to school full time and I said that is too bad because that is a kid with a future in the game. I do not change that comment one bit. You will beat this with the strength of your determination and with the prayers that will bring a miraculous recovery from above. You do have a future in the game still, and you will play next season. Leukemia is just a word. Courage is a state of being and Love conquers all. The hockey world never loses when people pray and faith meets the determination of the person who is battling. You are a hero today. You will be a legend in the future when the hockey world shouts of your VICTORY. You WILL win this battle and you will come out of it better than when you went in. To your family - we have your back with prayer and support.

I wanted you to know that you have been an inspiration to me...
I had thought about becoming a bone marrow donor for a few years now and even took home a package from a blood donor clinic but never went through with it. As soon as I heard about your need--I didn't even hesitate and am waiting for my swab kit to arrive. I knew the chances of me being a match for you was slim but at the same time, I also knew that I could be a match for someone else in need when I join the global registry.
People say that things happen for a reason and I wanted you to know that your courage and positive outlook in the face of this disease has inspired alot of people to do alot of wonderful things and that I cannot be the only one who also joined onematch.ca in the hopes of helping you and at the same time may go on to help some one else. Hi Luke,

Just wanted to let you know that you and your family are in our thoughts and prayers. Want to share a poem with you entitled:
CANCER FAITH...
"Cancer may come unexpectedly into your life;
Bringing fear, hard times, and great strife.
Love and care will forever and always stay,
Cancer will be knocked out of the way.
Your soul is and will be stronger than this;
It can conquer cancer, destroy and dismiss.
Courage and memories are very much needed;
As tiring treatments have faithfully succeeded.
Friendship, family, and faith cannot be suppressed;
They are the loving souls that make you blessed.

Luke, you have a tremendous will to fight this great battle. "Victory is ALWAYS possible for the person who refuses to stop fighting." Keep fighting Luke...you've got a few more rounds to go! Remember the harder the fight becomes, the more glorious the victory will be.

Take care Luke,

Im coaching a U12 team in Phoenix and we head to the National Championship in two weeks, so our season is still going. We pray often as a team and I want you to know that there are a bunch of 12 year olds who are praying for you and hoping for a miracle.

May that same power that raised Jesus from the dead be yours as you battle this. And through it all if you ever need to get away our home hear is open to you, flight cost included :) .

Luke,
As I listened to the broadcast last night, I just couldn't help but try to put a finger on the effect your courage has had on your team. I don't think anyone could do anymore for their team than you have done. When I say this, I mean that your team has clearly committed themselves to you and your journey and this is very much to honor you. But, even more important to the situation is that each and every one of those players MUST be looking to your courage, attitude and mentality as an inspiration. You are not just going to beat this, but you are also providing a role model to many players who are finding a sense of determination and purpose for why they live and why they play. Your battle will be temporary because The Lord promises "pressed but not crushed, afflicted not abandoned, struck down but not broken," and he also says that his "grace is enough for you because your strength is made perfect in the time of trial."

Your will live many, many decades. And your life will be a testemant to the power of love, prayer, family, solidarity and unity. It will be a testemant to the miraculous power of God and the phenomenal will of the human soul.

May God richly bless you and your family. May he also continue to make us all mindful of the needy and those who require our help. For some painful reason your hockey scholarship is at "Adversity University" for a semester. I believe with all my heart that you will leave with a master's degree in "Success". No hockey player is more prayed for or cared about on the prairies right now bud.

Congratulations on YOUR big win last night against The Klippers. I am certain your team would be the first to say that you get the game puck. Something tells me you wouldn't accept it. Maybe that type of humility is why EVERYONE is praying and thinking about you.

YOU WILL WIN.

Hi Luke keep the fight going it is amazing how many people you have touched. Our son played with Flin Flon and when we heard about this goalie from Yorkton with cancer and Matt was going to raise money there was no question we were giving because we know how strong the hockey families are.We have been keeping up with the play offs and so glad to see Yorkton is still in there and no question your the reason they are going so far. They are fighting with you and have become a very strong team to play. Continue success for the team...and all the best for you Go GET EM...

Luke and the Boechler Family,

Luke, I just want to let you know that all of us involved in Yorkton Minor Hockey are right behind you. The kids are talking about you in the rink and in the schools - everyone's prayers are with you - as are mine. Get well soon.

My dad brought me home this bracelet, and I have been wearing it without really knowing what it was about. Now that I read this story, I am truly touched by the story, and am very impressed. My thoughts and prayers are with you, keep fighting.

Hi Luke,
I don't think you know us.Our son Steven was picked up by the Yorkton Cardinals to play at Nationals this year. He proudly wears his Love 4 Luke shirt and the bracelot all the time. His brother even grabs the shirt and wears it to school sometimes.
You will beat this. The mind is a powerful instrument. Be positive.. you will beat this and we look forward to playing you( or maybe with you!) in
baseball in the 2011 season!
Hugs to all,
Latos Family
