When Hockey Canada announced its roster for the 2008-09 Women's Under-18 Team, only one Saskatchewan name made the cut, and it was Melville's Jessica Campbell. Jessica's the youngest sibling of the Campbell's, a great hockey family in Melville, which includes graduating Millionaire and former Terrier Dion Campbell.

CS: Team Canada named its Women's Under-18 Summer Team, and there aren't a lot of Saskatchewan or even Western Canada names on it. You're the only Saskatchewan player on the club, that's gotta feel special.

Jessica Campbell: Yeah, it feels good just to be representing Saskatchewan, it's just a great experience, it was exciting to get that email saying I made it.

CS: And what did they base the selection on? Was there a camp?

JC: Yeah, we went to Calgary for a week, and we did fitness testing, that was a big part of it. After fitness testing we played against Japan's Olympic team, some exhibition games. There were 40 girls and they divided us into 2 teams, so we played exhibition games against Team Japan and the other Canadian team.

CS: How'd you make out against that Japanese Olympic team?

JC: We were team Red and we actually won all our games, it was kind of a tournament, so we won the gold and were undefeated, it was pretty exciting.

CS: Were there any other Saskatchewan girls in camp?

JC: Yeah there were 2 other ones, and they both play for Swift Current.

CS: So first of all, it looks like you have some exhibition games against Team USA later this month?

JC: Yeah this Saturday we leave for Lake Placid, NY, that's where we'll play some exhibition games against Team USA Under-18's. From there, it's really done, there's just the one tournament for the summer team and that's about it for now.

CS: Now the real World Under-18s are in Germany January 5-10, but being on the summer roster doesn't mean you'll be on that roster for sure does it?

JC: No, if you don't make the summer team, it's not over, but if you do make the summer team there's a better chance you'll make the winter team, so it's a good thing to be on the summer team so far.

CS: So while those Lake Placid games are just exhibition, they're still important for individuals to keep your spots.

JC: Yeah, you have to really hold your ground in Lake Placid, because the girls who got cut from the summer team can still take your spot after Nationals when we play with our provincial teams.

*As a 15-year-old last season, playing "AAA" Midget with her hometown Melville Fox FM Prairie Fire, Jessica racked up 27-goals and 9-assists for 36 points in 28 games, and had 23-points in 28 games the year before that as a 14-year-old, playing against 17 and unders.
