A pitching gem by starter Jeff Chase was spoiled as the Yorkton Cardinals went on to lose their first game of the season 3-1 to the Regina Red Sox.
Chase worked 5 innings, surrendering just 2 runs on 2 hits while while striking out 7 and walking 5.
Chase pitched for the Cards in 2006 and 2007, and asked for the opening day start as soon as he committed to coming back, in January. He responded by striking out the side in the top of the first inning.
At the plate, newcomer Duncan McAlpine led the way, going 3-for-4 with 3 singles. His older brother Thomas drove in Yorkton's only run with a sacrifice fly in the 4th inning.
