Saturday Summary

Three of our local teams hit the ice Saturday night, but only one had a good result, and it was the one not in a heated playoff race.

The Wayway Wolverines finished the month of January with an 8-and-5 record with a 2-0 win in OCN.

Joe Carney scored a powerplay goal 3:00 into the game, and Ryan Regel added his team-leading 21st of the season just 2:51 later, and the two teams played scoreless for the final 54 minutes of the hockey game.

Brett Gagnon (pictured) made 29 saves, including 17 in the 3rd period for his first Junior 'A' shutout.

Wayway has gone 6-and-2 in their last 8 games.

The Wolverines are off until Tuesday when they host Swan Valley (7:20 / 7:30 on GX94).

--------------------------

The Swan Valley Stampeders struck first in Portage, but came up on the wrong end of a 4-3 decision.

Shelby Gray and Myles Stevens each had a goal and an assist... Chris Reimer had two helpers, and Ryan Marshall added his team-leading 35th.

Caden Unger took the loss, his first regulation loss of the season, now 9-1-1-2.

That was just the 3rd time the Stampeders had lost this season when scoring the game's first goal in 31 tries (25-3-1-2).

Portage closes to within 5 points of Swan Valley with the win. The Stamps have 10 games remaining... the Terriers have 9. They meet one more time in Portage on Sat/Feb/13.

The Stampeders are in Winkler Sunday afternoon to finish their trip. Their final 9 games after that are all against Sherwood Division opponents.

--------------------------

The Yorkton Terriers were down 4-0 after the second period in Flin Flin, closed the gap to 4-3 just 5:15 into the final frame, sparked by Riley Patterson fight at the 2:00 mark.

Nathan Murray (2:12), Blaine Tendler (3:42) and Kyle Miller (5:15), before the Bombers added an empty-netter for the 5-3 victory.

The Terriers (21-25-3-1) split their weekend series in Flin Flon, and now play 6 of their final 8 games on home ice, starting Wednesday vs Nipawin.

Yorkton's one point up on Melville for 4th place in the Sherwood, but the Millionaires now have 2 games in hand. Melville has 10 games remaining, 4 at home, 6 on the road.

The Mils and Terriers have their final home-and-home this Friday (YOR) and Saturday (MVL).

Should be a fun race to watch!
