More From Game 1 / Campbell, UNB Champs!

Game 1 in a Flash

On Dolinski's goal, I kind of gave a "I can't believe that just happened 'laugh'" / "Man does my throat ever hurt!" goal call... but I should be good to go for Game 2... hoping you won't hear my name in the scratches!

Melville product and former Millionaire (and Terrier) Dion Campbell and his University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds are 2009 CIS University Cup Champions, thanks to Sunday's 4-2 win over Western. Campbell scored a goal in the tournament opener, a 6-3 win over #1 ranked Alberta.

I enjoy watching/listening to WHL/NHL games, mainly for the games themselves, but I'll admit I try to listen to what the "big guys" are saying and how they describe certain things. Then I occassionally "borrow" a line here or there for my broadcasts, or maybe think up something along the same lines. I think one of my downfalls is using the same words/phrases to describe certain things. I call the boards "the wall" alot, and the net "the cage", the post "the pipe"... "dumps it in", "rink-wide", "up the middle", "hit a body infront", "(goalie) keeps it out"... are some crutches you'll hear this radio guy say a lot. And now you're gonna pay attention because I just admitted to it! And those are straight off the top of my head. Gotta change it up a little, variety's "the spice of life," afterall.

Anyway, I thought it was neat the other night while watching Washington play the Leafs on TSN, how Chris Cuthbert called Caps' forward Brooks Laich "the former Tisdale Trojan" when he had the puck. It would have been easy to call him a former "Seattle Thunderbird" or "Moose Jaw Warrior." (He was traded from Moose Jaw to Seattle for I believe Craig Olynick and a Euro who I think's name was Artem Polikarpov... Laich won WHL MVP in Seattle that year... they're STILL talking about that trade in the Jaw.) But, Cuthert brought it even closer to the grass roots, and I guarantee the handful of people in Tisdale watching the game, or other former Trojans collectively said "YEAHHH" when Cuthert dropped that one.

Saturday night I was driving from Watson to Saskatoon and had the Blades/Hurricanes game on the radio. Voice of the Blades Les Lazaruk referred to some pushing and shoving after the whistle as a "testosterone leak." Brilliant! I can't steal that one, it's too original (at least I've never heard it before), and again, I just told you where I got it from.

Here's a couple of "up-and-comers" who I might also have to yank a few quotes from. The first two I just saw on Brandon Wheat Kings PBP man Bruce Luebke's blog. It's Marty Murray's son Cole, acting as a reporter in the Manchester Monarchs' dressing room.

Cole Murray 1

His first guest on Part 2 is Wapella native Bud Holloway.

Cole Murray 2

This next one I found on YouTube a couple weeks ago. I'm sure you've seen/heard Voice of the Buffalo Sabres Rick Jeanneret's wild and crazy goal calls, such as "May day, May day, May day," etc. Well, his job could soon be in jeopardy.

Ah, just keep doing what you're doing...it's sounds great. Although if you could get that Bronco fan to be your official colour commentator for the next game, that would add to the broadcast.

That was the P.A. Announcer! He was 2 people down from me in the press box. Couldn't believe it... I was warned about him ahead of time, didn't think it'd be that bad but holy smokes.

Knowing the Humboldt rink, I knew it was someone in the press box yelling all that garbage that got on the air. That's one reason there is the rule " No cheering in the Press Box"

I think the league should step in and tell him to cool it!!! As funny as it was, it was still very classless and Bush league. Also, you have might have kids listening to the game and they don't need to hear that!!

You should look into that Craig

Hey Ken, if he wasn't twice as big as him, he would've said something. Perhaps you need a goon to be your colour guy for the next game in Humboldt.

I think Clark's coming for Game 3. Maybe the two of us could take him. Probably not.
