TOGETHER AGAIN

They were an overtime goal away from meeting in the playoffs for a fifth straight year last season. Now, the Yorkton Terriers and Melville Millionaires will do battle in post season play once again.

The two familiar foes will finish 2nd and 3rd in the SJHL's Sherwood Conference, and meet in the first round of the playoffs, it's just a matter of who'll be 2nd, and who'll be 3rd.

On Saturday, Yorkton lost 2-1 in Notre Dame which meant they could no longer catch Weyburn for first place (the Red Wings also beat Kindersley to assure themselves the pennant). The Millionaires, who had a late 8:15 start time against La Ronge due to bus problems with the Ice Wolves, and may have already known they'd finish top three before their game was over, as Estevan fell to Humboldt. But for good measure, the Mils beat the Ice Wolves 4-2, which also helps them in their chase for 2nd spot.

With Yorkton's loss and Melville's win on Saturday, the Millionaires are now just one point back of the Terriers for that 2nd position, and home ice advantage in Round 1.

Both teams have three games remaining. Yorkton's home to La Ronge on Sunday and Wednesday, and in Notre Dame again to finish up on Saturday. Melville welcomes La Ronge again on Tuesday, host Humboldt on Friday, and welcome Notre Dame next Tuesday.

The Mils also have the tie-breaker vs Yorkton for winning the season series, so if they'll get 2nd place and host Game 1 if the two local rivals wind up tied.

No official dates are out, but I expect the series to start on Friday, March 2nd.

The Wayway Wolverines had a spirited comeback in Winnipeg to give their playoff chances a big lift.

Wayway trailed the Saints 2-0 after the first period, but Pierre Landry got one back in the 2nd period, and Ashley Howie evened things up with just 36 seconds left in regulation.

Landry's 2nd of the game came on a powerplay, 1:49 into overtime, giving the Wolverines two massive points in the standings.

The Wolverines are now 4 points behind Swan Valley for a playoff spot, and both teams have 7 games remaining.

Starting Tuesday, the Wolverines & Stampeders will go head to head 3 times in 7 nights, which could very well make or break the season for both teams.

One would think Wayway has to win no less than two of those meetings, because if the Stamps win 2, the gap would be 6, and Swan would have the tie-breaker, with just 4 games remaining.
