The Wayway Wolverines are playing .500 hockey for the first time this season, thanks to a 4-3 OT win over the Selkirk Steelers on Saturday.
Their 21-21-6 record still has the Wolverines last in the competitive Sherwood Division, but after Neepawa lost in Winkler, Wayway's the closest they've been to a playoff spot all season, just one point back of the Natives for a crossover.
Ryan Duhaime scored twice in regulation, Curtis Veitch added one, while Stephane Robidoux scored the overtime winner with 10 seconds remaining in overtime, on a powerplay.
The Wolverines have been outshooting teams by massive margins since January 10th, putting up 53 against Selkirk. Ryan Benitez earned the win, making 36/39 saves.
Wayway and Selkirk have needed overtime or shootouts to decide each of their three meetings so far this season, with the Wolverines winning both games at home. They travel to Selkirk on February 12th to wrap up their season series. It COULD be a first round playoff preview.... if Wayway gets in via the crossover, and the Steelers hang on to first in the Addison.
The Wolverines are home to the Swan Valley Stampeders on Tuesday.
------------------------
In Swan Valley, the Stamps got some retribution after a 7-3 loss to Portage on Friday, by downing the Terriers 3-1 on Saturday.
Dylan Wells made 25/26 saves in the win, while his counterpart Jason Kasdorf was named the game's first star (looks like for good reason!), stopping 40/43 shots. Swan Valley out-shot Portage 24-4 in the first period alone, and were only up 1-0.
Shelby Gray scored twice, while Jeff Peel notched the other.
The 4th place Stamps are now 6 points back of OCN and Dauphin, but more importantly, get some breathing room on the 5th place Neepawa Natives, opening a 5 point lead.
----------------------
The Melville Millionaires almost turned the table on what happened to them the night before.
After blowing a 3-0 lead after two periods and losing 4-3 (OT) to Notre Dame on Friday... the Mils were down 5-1 to Humboldt after two on Saturday, and stormed back, but came up a little short, falling 5-4.
Lucas Froese had 1g-1a for the Mils, while Justin Hollinger, Michael Desjarlais and Spencer Crow also scored. Crow's a Melville product who was called up from the Regina Pat Canadians. The Mils also pulled up F Devin Fafard from the Yorkton Harvest, and Michael Sagen also made his Mils debut.
The Mils had no less than 6 players aged 17 or younger in the lineup on Saturday, as it was a battle of the two teams who unloaded the most talent at the January 10th deadline.
Melville's still 4 points up on Notre Dame for the Sherwood's final playoff spot, with 2 games in hand.
--------------
The Estevan Bruins pulled a little further ahead of Melville for 4th, but did the Yorkton Terriers a favour, beating Kindersley 4-2.
With that, Yorkton's still two points up on the Klippers for the Conference lead, and now have a game in hand. That game in hand will be played tonight (SUN) when the Terriers host Notre Dame.
Note the early 6:00 start time.
Yorkton then travels to Kindersley Tuesday for a big four pointer.

Curling........
At Saskatchewan Men's Northerns in Unity, Yorkton's Gerry Adam won his 'B' event game in the afternoon, but fell 9-2 to Derek Gaudreau Saturday night. Adam has one final chance to move on to the Tankard, in one of the two 'C' Finals today at 2:00.
We know one local product will be at the Tankard (aside from Yorkton's Terry Marteniuk who received a bye for a tour championship win). Yorkton's Jeff Sharp plays third for the Carl deConninck-Smith rink out of Rosetown, and they won the 'A' Side at Northerns to advance.
At Southerns in Weyburn... two local rinks went head to head in a 'B' event game Saturday at 12:30, and it was Whitewood's Jason Krupski deating Jeff Hartung from Langenburg 7-5. Hartung was then knocked out of contention by Estevan's Brent Gedak with a 7-2 loss in the 'C'. Krupski also lost Saturday night, falling 7-6 to Dean Moulding. Much like Gerry Adam in the North, Krupski will play in a 'C' Final at 2:00 today, with a chance to advance to Provincials.

Craig, Sagen played friday night at home Vs Notre Dame. Good size upfront for the Mils. Should be a solid addiction once he plays a few games.
Ah, thanks. His profile said 1 game played when I clicked on him, likely because the Humboldt game was listed as 'unofficial final' @ the time.
