Northern/Southern Men's Curling Through Day 1

Two of the three local rinks won their opening games at Northern and Southern Men's Provincial Curling playdowns on Thursday, and they were very close to going 3-for-3.

At Northern's in Unity, Yorkton's Gerry Adam beat Darren Camm of Saskatoon 7-5 in the 1:00 draw. Adam scored singles in each of the first four ends, and needed a deuce in 10 to secure the win. Adam stays in the 'A' Event and plays Derek Gaudreau's Shellbrook rink Friday morning at 9:00.

In Weyburn, where the Southerns are being held, Whitewood's Jason Krupski played in the opening draw, and came away with 9-3 win over Regina's Bill Weppler. Krupski built a 3-0 lead through three ends, and put up a 4 spot in the 8th, which led to early handshakes. Krupski remains in the winner's bracket, and will meet Moose Jaw's Mark Herbert at 9:00 Friday morning.

Langenburg's Jeff Hartung appeared to be in control of his opening game Thurday night, leading Regina's Dean Moulding 6-4 through 8 ends. Moulding then scored three in the 9th, and stole one in the 10th for an 8-6 win. That drops Hartung to the 'B' Event, where he'll play Ron Lucas of Assiniboia Friday at 3:00.

Tanner Lesann had 1g-1a, while Levi Cable had 2 assists as the Yorkton Harvest won their 2nd straight game, 4-2 over the Tisdale Trojans.

Dustin Skilliter and Kailum Gervais also found the net for the Harvest, and Kale Thomson made 22 saves.

That gets the Harvest (14-15-1-3) one point back of Tisdale for 7th place in the Saskatchewan Midget 'AAA' Hockey League.

Yorkton gets the weekend off, and infact don't play again for another week, when they host Regina next Thursday.

One SJHL game Thursday, and it was Estevan starting a 3 game swing with a 5-4 loss in Battleford.

The Sherwood Conference race is only getting more interesting.

Now all of a sudden Melville's 5 points back of Estevan for 4th with two games in hand. The Mils host Notre Dame Friday night, with a chance to give the Hounds' playoff hopes a real blow. Notre Dame's 5 back of the Millionaires, and have played 3 more games.

Now, the Yorkton Terriers will hope Estevan can go into Kindersley and steal at least one. The Bruins visit the Klippers Friday and Saturday. Yorkton's played one more game than Kindersley and lead the Klippers by 4 points for first, and don't play again until hosting Kindersley on Sunday. By then, the Terriers will have a game in hand on the Klips, but could find themselves tied after holding a once-cushy lead atop the Conference. I really think it'll come down to the two remaining head-to-head meetings between the Terriers and Klippers (both of which are in Kindersley).

Every playoff series in the SJHL & MJHL are shaping up to be beauties, regardless who's in them.
