The second part of the Yorkton Terriers / Winnipeg Blues trade has been completed, and it leaves the Terriers short yet another defenseman.
The Blues have selected Drew McDermott from the Terriers roster.
The move stems from the January 10th trade for Troy Smukowich... which is now complete:
To Yortkon (last year)
1989 F Troy Smukowich
To Wpg Blues (this year)
1990 D Clark Byczynski (rights sent to Swan Valley)
1991 D Drew McDermott

Here's McDermott scoring the final goal of the Terriers' 2010 Playoff run, late in Game 6 vs La Ronge to force Overtime.

Terrier Coach/Associate GM Trent Cassan talks about the deal.

What happened to Troy Dumais and Rylan McDonell?
Is that why McDonnell was taken off the Yorkton roster as a ploy to maybe hide him from the Blues?
Wow. Costly trade. Sounds like McMullen is making quite an impact though.
Anonymous #1... Dumais is still on the roster. See Anonymous #2 for McDonell. He's playing tonight according to the Team Pres.
Not to downplay the importance of what Smuky meant to the team last year, but 2 of the top 3 defenceman on the team seems a little bit outrageous. I heard McDermott decided to pack it in anyway.
smukowitch had one good playoff series and that was all.
pretty sure he scored 6 goals in 5 games vs Weyburn, kept scoring against Kindersley, including the OT winner in Game 5... and him, Zubko and Moar were their top line against La Ronge.
No doubt it feels like a heavy price now... but he was one of the big reasons they went as far as they did last year. Not the only one, but a big one!
And... they're still in first place!
Didn't they start 6 and 0 last year or was that the year before? so you are happy with the trade then Craig? thats good to know.
6-0? I don't recall that in my time here but could be wrong.
I don't think anyone who supports the Terriers is HAPPY that Clark and Drew are no longer Terriers... but they were happy when Smuk scored 14 in the playoffs, leading a 5th place team one goal away playing in Game 7 of the final.
And, to steal a quote from a GM I know, when talking about another trade... "What, did they expect us to give them (Troy Smukowich) for 6 Pepsi??"
Gotta give something to get something, and so far the guys who are still in Terrier jersies are still getting it done. Byczynski also has 6 points in 8 games for the 6-and-2 SV Stampeders... so I'd say things are working out for all parties. No reason to be negative.
Good point Craig , but I hope Mcdermit reports, I hate see a kid quit hockey over trades.I guess what people are mad about is the way tade is was done, it was certainly an odd trade.
