These two teams are on the air in back to back nights, with the Swan Valley Stampeders and Wayway Wolverines starting a home and home tonight in Waywayseecappo. They'll meet again tomorrow in Swan River. As long as the Stampeders are still alive in the playoff race, they're in "must-win" territory. The Stamps are 17 points back of Neepawa for 5th in the Sherwood (5th place team will most likely cross over this year), and they play Neepawa 5 more time and have 3 games in hand on the Natives. As a best-case-scenario example... if the Stamps win all 3 games in hand and all 5 head-to-head meetings, they'd be one point back of Neepawa. Wayway's 1 point ahead of the Natives in 4th.
A few notes to get you set:
- The Wolverines have some pride on the line tonight. This is the first time in franchise history that Wayway's been above .500 the entire season. A loss tonight would have them at the .500 mark for the first time since they were 0-0.
- The season series is TIGHT. Three of the four previous meetings went to overtime or a shootout. Wayway's 2-0-2-0 against Swan (6 of 8 points), while the Stamps are 2-1-0-1 vs Wayway (5 of 8 points). Wayway's won once in regulation and once in a shootout, while both of Swan's wins have come in overtime. The road team has also won all 4 games.
- Goals for and against in the season series are also deadlocked at 12-12.
- The Stamps' powerplay has struggled against Wayway this season, going 2-for-21 (9.5%). One of those two goals was off the stick of Justin Giesbrecht in overtime in the last meeting, Nov/17. Giesbrecht, of course, is now a Yorkton Terrier. For the season, Swan's PP is 9th best in the league at 17%.
- With Jason Bowles out of the lineup, Wayway's Paul Marcoux has taken over the team lead in goals (25). Bowles still leads the team with 68 points. Marcoux led all scorers at the MJHL All-Star Game Sunday in Selkirk with 5 points (2-3-5).
- A defenseman leads the Wolverines in scroing against the Stamps. Cody Danychuk has a goal and 6 points in 4 games. For Swan, Darcy Riddell has 1 goal (an OT winner), and 4 points. No one else has more than 2 points against Wayway, but 11 players have 2 points.
- It's a battle of the most, and least penalized teams in the MJHL tonight. Swan- 1402 PIMs... Wayway- 778 PIMs.
