Yorkton Cardinal fans got their money's worth on Sunday afternoon, with a total of 5 1/2 hours of ball at Jubilee Park. However despite all the effort, the Cards came away with two losses. First, they had to finish Thursday's game with Sherwood Park that was rained out after 11 innings in a 1-1 tie... and it took another 9 innings to break that tie. Finally, in the top of the 20th, Sherwood Park racked up 4 runs. And in the home half, the Cardinals loaded the bases, but wound up getting just 2, falling 5-3 in 20. The Cards and Dukes took a half hour break and played another 9 innings, this time SP came out on top 9-6. It was looking like the day's first game for a while, until the Dukes put up 8 runs in the 7th inning, and led 9-1 as late as the 8th inning. Again, Yorkton put forth a valiant comeback, scoring 2 in the 8th, and another 3 in the 9th thanks to a Brian Burton 3-run homer, but that was as close as they'd get. Yorkton's now lost 3 in a row, and the East Division gets even tighter. Cardinals' Coach Bill Sobkow was proud of the effort by his usual closer Levi Rhoades (pictured, courtesy yorktoncardinalsbaseball.com), who pitched 8 2/3 innings in that 20 inning marathon, and was still tagged with the loss.
"He threw 110 pitches, and he's capable of that. Even though he's a closer, he's been asked to be a starter in college next fall. He's got good velocity, a good change-up, and a good curve, and that's all condusive to a good starting pitcher. But I do want to congratulate, and really acknowledge Levi's 9 inning pitching performance, that was really outstanding."
Next action for the Cardinals is Thursday when they host the Weyburn Beavers at Jubilee Park beginning at 7:05.
