Terriers Score a Checkmate

With the cost of running the Yorkton Terriers at approximately $750,000, the club felt it was time to hire a professional marketing company to handle the duties of corporate sponsorships, etc, for the upcoming 2008-09 season. Regina-based Checkmate Strategic Planning Inc. will work in conjunction with the Terriers effective immediately, and they're excited about it, and so are the Terriers.
Terriers' Ass't Coach and Trainer Ron Holloway: "In the past, we've always hired somebody locally, or myself and (Head Coach) Eddie (Zawatsky) have done it. We joke that we're just an old plumber and an old hockey coach, and it's probably better suited for professionals. We talked to Kindersley, who also hires professionals to do their marketing and they said the results they had were just amazing. So we took it to our board, and discussed it, and we're going with Checkmate Marketing, who are also the marketers for the SJHL."
Three representatives from Checkmate were there, including Director of Marketing Tyler Wilson.
"The Terriers came to us, we do everything from the CJHL to the SJHL, all league-wide properties, and that's how we got our connection with the Yorkton Terriers, they were happy with what we did with the league last year. They were having a tough time finding a marketing manager and they come to us, and we're excited to take this on. We're based out of Regina, but we're pretty mobile, we're at every venue in the SJHL a few times a year, and we'll be popping into Yorkton more often now that we've got a seperate contract with the Terriers and we're looking forward to meeting everyone."
