Cards Snap Mini-Slide

Nick Longmire (La Mesa, California) had 2 of Yorkton's 4 RBI's Thursday night

The Yorkton Cardinals ended a 3 game losing streak and moved back over .500 in the process, shutting out the visiting Weyburn Beavers 4-0 on Thursday. Unofficially, I had centre fielder Nick Longmire 3-for-3 with 2 singles, a double and 2 RBI's. Local boy Logan Kachur went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored. I caught up with Co-Coach Jason Santangelo after the game.
CS: A big 4-0 win over a divisional team, was this the most complete game of the season?

Jason Santangelo: Yes, from top to bottom. We came out early, had a good batting practice, good 'D' stations, only struck out I believe 4 times, and when you're averaging 10, that takes a couple innings of baseball out of the way. We played hard, found a way to win.

CS: When you shutout a team it starts with pitching, and you had 3 guys who had it going tonight.

JS: Yeah, they did well. Mike McGlaughlin (6IP, 0R, 3H, 5K, 0BB) didn't have his best stuff tonight but he bulldogged his way through and found a way to get around them out. Then Max (Guttierez) game in and did a good set-up role, and Buster (Mueller) game in and had a good close so it was nice, good round game.

CS: How 'bout Nick Longmire, talk about what he's brought since being a late addition. I had him 3-for-3 with a couple walks.

JS: Nick plays the game the right way, he plays it hard. He's going to leave everything on the field. When the game's over, whether it's 9 innings or 20 like the other day, he leaves it out here and he's mentally and physically drained. You gotta love having a kid like that play for you.

CS: And when the East Division's this tight you've gotta win these games hey?

JS: Yeah you're exactly right, there's no time to lose too many games with this kind of schedule. You can't win them all, so it's about how you bounce back after a couple losses and we did that.

The Cardinals improve to 7-and-6, still second place in the division. They're in Moose Jaw on Saturday, before once again hosting Weyburn Monday night, then welcoming Melville on Canada Day. (Cardinal pictures courtesy http://www.yorktoncardinalsbaseball.com/)
