It almost appears everyone did what the Good Book says and took Sunday off!
I came from Saskatoon to Yorkton this afternoon, and called and/or texted all four local GM's, and heard from two of them. Pretty quiet day today.
Melville's Cody Hanson didn't play Saturday in Kindersley, and all indications were that a deal was close to being done, or WAS done. As of now, it sounds like he's still a Millionaire, but in all likelihood has still played his last game in Blue & White. It sounds like he was close to going to Estevan, but the deal is off the table, at least for now. There's a decent chance the Mils and Bruins will play in the Survivor Series, and I would think both Hanson and the Millionaires would like to avoid seeing eachother in post-season play! Although, Weyburn and Estevan have appeared to be the most interested.
Former Millionaire Brayden Metz had 2 more points for Melfort (2a) in a 5-2 win over Notre Dame on Sunday. That makes it 6 points in 4 games for Metzy since heading to Melfort.
La Ronge's Travis Eggum scored his 40th goal in his 40th game on Sunday, as his quest for 50 in 50 continues. Barring injury or a slump he hasn't seen yet this season, he'll be the first SJHLer to score 50 since the 2002/03 season (needs 10 in his final 18 games).
The WHL Trade deadline is also Monday, but it's at 4:00pm our time. So, depending what happens there, Junior 'A' teams still have 8 hours to react.
Davis Vandane remains in Spokane as of now. No one's told me he's "definitely coming back." I was told by a couple people (not Terrier staff) that he's "definitely staying in Spokane." But it doesn't sound like a sure thing right now, and the that will be sorted out sometime Monday afternoon.
If Vandane comes back, I'm not sure the Terriers need to make anymore moves. Is there still an outside chance of seeing Austin Bourhis (Prince Albert) or John Niebrandt (Kootenay)? Bourhis just received a one game suspension for a hit from behind against the Saskatoon Blades a few days ago. Bourhis has over 100 PIMs on the season for the Raiders, and that's his role... provide toughness. He brought a rough 'n' tough style to the Terriers last season too, but he's also an offensive guy who can play the powerplay at the Junior 'A' level. Niebrandt has played in 37 of Kootenay's 42 games, and has 2-assists, 26 PIMs, and is a +6. Kootenay's going for it, hence acquiring Cody Eakin from Swift Current on Sunday (BTW, they gave up FIVE players and THREE (1st, 2nd, 3rd round) picks for him.) The rumour mill continues to have Brayden Schenn going from Brandon to Saskatoon, but it's not a done deal yet.
If Vandane, Bourhis and Niebrandt remain in the Western League after 4PM our time on Monday... then the Terriers just might try to add another Dman.
All is quiet in Swan Valley today, and I haven't been able to reach Barry Butler in Wayway. Last time we spoke, Barry said they'd like to get deeper up front, so we'll see if they can pull something off before midnight. Speaking of WHL drop-downs... I wonder what the chances are of the Wolverines getting Jens Meilleur back. He was hurt at the start of the season, and has 2 assists in 14 games with the Brandon Wheat Kings. He played as a 16 year old in Wayway all of last season, and showed he could score in Junior, even at that age. He would be a huge addition to the Wolverines' top six, if they see him back... although with Brandon reportedly interested in moving Schenn... it shows they're getting younger... and they might want to keep Jens up there.
An MJHL Sherwood team, NOT based in Waywayseecappo or Swan River did add a top end forward, and it'll likely be announced Monday morning. It's a move that might make that team the new favourite in the division, which by the way has its 2nd and 4th place teams separated by one point!
This is very much a ''speculation'' post... as there's really nothing new to share today. Expect that to change on Monday. I do think the biggest moves are done, but the wheeling and dealing is likely far from over.
