The Melville Millionaires improved their chances of a 1st place finish, while the Yorkton Cardinals bolstered their odds of earning a playoff spot on Monday night.
Both teams found their bats, with the Mils pounding out 15 hits in a 13-4 win over the first place Regina Red Sox. That puts Melville now 1.5 games out of top spot.
A seven run 5th inning was highlighted by a Casey Justice Grand Slam, his 6th HR of the season. Paul Lamantia added a homer of his own, going 2-for-5. Tyler Lowey was 4-for-5 on the night, Mark Cochran was 3-for-4 with 3 runs, while James Green and Nick Senior were both 2-for-4.
6 of Melville's starting 9 batters are hitting over .300 for the season. Lowey leads the way at .349.
------------------
Thomas McAlpine had 5 RBI's (3-for-4), and leadoff man Tanner Waite went 4-for-4 at the dish, leading the Yorkton Cardinals to a 9-5 win over Weyburn, ending the Cards' 10 game losing streak.
Richard Seaton was 2-for-3 with 2 runs and an RBI.
Starting pitcher Jeff Chase struck out 9, while giving up just 5 hits over 7 innings. Jordan Herbison closed it out, working the final two innings.
Yorkton and Weyburn are now tied for third, but the Cardinals have played two fewer games, and because they won't be making up their rained-out games against Edmonton... whoever has the best WINNING PERCENTAGE out of Yorkton and Weyburn will get the final playoff spot.
Right now it's Weyburn with the edge, at .351, while Yorkton's % is .343.
The Cards and Beavers both take Tuesday off, before playing two crucial games in Weyburn on Wednesday and Thursday.
