Mils, Terriers Lose One-Goal Games

The Melville Millionaires spotted the Melfort Mustangs a 5-1 lead, before falling short in a valiant comeback, losing 5-4 at the Northern Lights Ice Palace.

The Mils opened the scoring when Colton Kennedy scored his first SJHL goal on the powerplay just over 3 minutes in, but the Mustangs notched the next 5.

Deszi Wiens faced 16 shots in the first period, allowing 4 goals. Zach Rakochy played the rest of the way, and only faced 10 shots. The Mils were out-shot 16-5 in the first frame, but then out-shot Melfort 14-6 and 22-4 in the final two periods, but as Jamie Fiesel said on the postgame, you just can't afford to give anyone that kind of lead and expect to come back from it.

Kennedy, Tyson Melnychuk, Logan Herauf and Michael Jordan scored Melville's goals. The Mils were also without defensemen Tyson Newell and Jordan Reeve, but they hope to have them both back this week when they host Notre Dame on Wednesday, and Humboldt on Friday.

The Yorkton Terriers lost 3 one-goal games on their weekend trip, coming away with one of a possible 6 points thanks to a shootout loss on Saturday.

Sunday against Kindersley, they were down 1-0, up 2-1, and went on to lose 3-2 in regulation.

Devin Peters made 33/35 saves as the Terriers out-shot the Klippers 41-35.

Ryan Griffiths and Adam Moar scored for Yorkton. Griffiths has 1g-3a in 4 games since coming from Swan Valley.

-------------------------

Gotta give props to two of the top goalies in the SJHL. Humboldt's Andrew Bodnarchuk picked up a 41-save shutout in a 1-0 win over La Ronge. Nipawin's Ryan Kerpan stopped all 52 shots he faced in a 4-0 shutout of Weyburn. The Hawks beat the league-leading Wings, only to check the out-of-town scoreboard and find that Melfort and Humboldt also both won. The Hawks are .500, but still last in the Bauer, 3 points back of Humboldt with a game in hand.

In the race for second place in the MJHL's Sherwood Division... Portage lost 4-3 (OT) in Dauphin, while Neepawa fell 4-1 in Winkler.

Swan Valley's in OCN tomorrow (TUE) night, on GX94, before hosting the Blizzard on Wednesday.
