GX MJ Teams Both Win, SJ Clubs Come Up Short

Quick Saturday night update as I watch a laugher on Hockey Night in Canada.

I've got 9 Broadcasts in the next 12 days to finish off January and a 5-month pregnant wife at home so I kept the computer off today and did HOUSE WORK!

Had at least one reader upset I hadn't posted since Friday morning, and based on the team the comment was about, and the town my SiteMeter says it came from, I know exactly who the sarcastic remark was made by.

-------------------

Side note... why does CBC's Scott Oake have his Twitter account under his name between periods? His last Tweet was November 7! Sheesh, I leave the blog alone for one day and get flack.

-------------------

I've gotta start with the Wayway Wolverines. After failing to pick up back to back wins in their first 39 games... they've done it TWICE in the last week, and have won 4 of their last 6, thanks to a weekend sweep of the Addison Division leading Selkirk Steelers.

The Wolverines won 6-5 at home on Friday, thanks to a Shane Goodrunning hat trick and 3-assists by D Steven Duda.

Then Saturday, Wayway scored three quick ones and held on to blank the Steel 4-0.

Niko Grose scored twice, while Paul Van de Velde had three points (1g-2a).

In his second MJHL start, Chris Jackson stopped all 26 shots he faced for the shutout.

The Wolverines' 6-game homestand resumes Tuesday when they host Dauphin. The Kings are in Wayway once again on Thursday... that one's on the radio.

-----------

The Swan Valley Stampeders had a big bounce-back effort against Portage, beating the Terriers 4-2 at home on Saturday.

Friday night, the Stamps fell 6-1 in Neepawa, their first loss of 2010, and it was an ugly one.

Full credit to Neepawa, who blanketed Swan's best players, not giving them any time or space with the puck, and picked off countless attempted long passes.

Neepawa WILL give whoever they face in the playoffs a hard time, even if it's Dauphin, and I'm not so sure the Stampeders want to see them, not after Friday anyway. They work hard, they're BIG, and have a solid back end.

Good news for the Stamps is, although Neepawa's 3-2-0-1 against them, the two remaining regular season meetings are both at the Centennial Arena.

Jayme Janzen played both games for Swan over the weekend, and after allowing 6 on 32 shots in Neepawa, he kicked out 30/32 against Portage.

Myles Stevens broke his 'mini-slump' with a goal and an assist. Stevens went back to back games without registering a point (Wayway/Neepawa) for the first time since mid-October.

16 year old defenseman Evan Morden scored his first MJHL goal, fellow blueliner Paul Bonar got the Stamps on the board with a PP goal in the first, and captain Darcy Riddell scored the winner in the third before Stevens iced it. The Stamps trailed twice in the game by 1-0 and 2-1 counts.

Swan's got a home and home with OCN Tuesday/Wednesday. The Tuedsay road game's on the air.

-------------------

The Yorkton Terriers had an early 1-0 lead against the Kindersley Klippers in Eston, but had to settle for a single point, falling 2-1 in a shootout.

As of now, the box score isn't 'finalized', so the standings aren't updated accordingly, but Yorkton's now 3 points up on Melville, and the Mils should have a game in hand in the race for 4th place and home ice in what keeps looking more and more like a collision course meeting in the Survivor series between these two clubs. Although 3rd place certainly isn't out of the question if either of them can get hot down the stretch. Kindersley's got games in hand and a little cushion though.

I'm told Luke Boechler was outstanding in both games so far this weekend, in Battleford and vs Kindersley, but same old story, Luke doesn't seem to get a lot of offensive support when he's in there (about 1.75 per game to be exact).

The Terriers face the Klippers in Eston again on Sunday, before returning home to face Humboldt on Wednesday.

--------------------

Melville and Flin Flon were scoreless after the first period, but the Bombers scored three times in a matter of 3:24 in the second period, and the Mils went on to lose 4-1.

Austin Krahenbil scored Melville's lone goal, and I'm guessing Flin Flon G Matt Weninger was the difference...? He stopped 44/45 pucks, and faced 22 in the third period alone... but didn't crack the 3 Stars online...

I'll meet the Mils in Melfort (Sunday), and have the early 6:00 broadcast... on the air with the Pre Game Show at 5:50. Melfort spanked Weyburn 7-1 on Saturday so we'll see what Sunday's matchup has in store.
