Melville's got the early upper hand in the Western Major Baseball League final, after stealing home field advantage with a 5-3 win in Okotoks in Wednesday's Game 1.
The Millionaires used 4 pitchers, the third of which being closer Coty Saranthus, who gave up his usual zero runs in 2.2 innings, while striking out 6 to get the win. Matt Costa got the start, going 5.1, giving up 3 runs, only 1 of which was earned, while giving up no walks and fanning two.
The Dawgs had their ace Jeff Duda on the hill, and while he punched out 13 Mils' batters in 8 innings of work (10 of the K's were against Melville's first 5 batters), Melville did get 3 runs and 6 hits off him, before tagging Mark Hardy for 2 runs in the top of the 9th to win it.
Kyle Barclay and James Green came through with clutch 2-out RBI's in the 9th to break a 3-3 tie, and the Millionaires take a 1-0 series lead into tonight's (THU) Game 2 in Okotoks. This means, as of now, the Mils do have an opportunity to win a championship on home field, with Game 3 at Pirie Field Saturday at 7:30, and Game 4 the following night.
