Monday Morning

- 22 Western Hockey League teams passed over goaltender Jacob DeSerres. Now he's a Memorial Cup Champion. DeSerres backstopped the Saint John Sea Dogs to a 3-1 win over host Mississauga in Sunday's final, making 34 saves. DeSerres played in last year's Memorial Cup Final with the Brandon Wheat Kings, losing 9-1. He was put on waivers by the Wheat Kings in the off-season, nobody claimed him, and he jumped to the QMJHL. Now he's a Mem Cup Champ. He's also just the second player in history to play in back-to-back Memorial Cups in two different leagues. The fact that he also started in goal in back to back finals is quite the story.

- I watched the Yorkton Bulldogs beat the Estevan Big Dogs 15-7 in Prairie Gold Lacrosse League action yesterday afternoon. Justin Genaille (3g-5a), Zach Soke (3g-2a) and Jayden Dozorec (3g-2a) all had hat-tricks, Jerrison Fisher and Dalton Bakke scored twice each, while Brendon Turberfield and Jackson Tetreault scored one apiece. Louden Choptuik got the win in goal. Estevan Bruins' forward Dylan Smith had a goal and two assists for Estevan. I'm told by Bruins' Play-by-Play voice Blaine Weyland that that was Smith's first lacrosse game in about 3 years!

Our local clubs get going on Wednesday, when it sounds like the monsoon will be over, so hopefully field conditions allow for baseball. The Yorkton Cardinals play host to the Regina Red Sox, while the Melville Millionaires travel to Moose Jaw.

- It was announced late last week that not only will the East Central Track & Field Districts be cancelled, but so will the provincial meet this Friday/Saturday. The Saskatchewan Teachers' Federation is continuing job action, with teachers not taking part in extra-curricular activities this week, and Track & Field takes the brunt unfortunately. Keep in mind that I'm sure 99% of teachers (maybe more) feel terrible for the student-athletes. SHSAA Track Provincials have been held since 1948, and this is the third time the event has been called off, and first since 1963. The first two cancellations (1954 & 1963) were both weather-related.

- I should have some hockey news within the next day or two. One of our four local teams wants to announce some signings, so stay tuned for that.

Enjoy your week, stay dry!
