Wednesday Wins For Wolves/Mils

Make it 6 straight wins for the Wayway Wolverines, and in exciting fashion again.

Paul Vandevelde scored with 28 seconds remaining in overtime, as the Wolverines bumped their season high winning streak to 6, with a 2-1 (OT) win over the visiting OCN Blizzard.

Matt Malenstyn scored opened the scoring in the first period, before Mike Collins tied it for OCN, short-handed with just 8 seconds left in the opening frame. That was all for scoring until Vandevelde's winner.

4 of Wayway's last 7 games have gone to overtime, and they've won three of them. Their only loss was in a shootout in Dauphin... the only game in their last 9 that they didn't win.

Shots on goal were just 21-20 for Wayway, with Ryan Benitez earning the win again, making 20 saves, and he's now 9-5, with a 2.20 GAA, and a .913% in Wayway colours.

The Wolverines have also jumped up in the standings, again. They're now 1 point up on Swan Valley for 4th in the Sherwood.

Neepawa lost 5-3 in Portage. The Natives are 7 points back of Wayway, and 6 behind Swan. The Stampeders and Natives have a home-and-home Friday in Neepawa, Saturday in Swan River.

The Melville Millionaires have a little room to breathe again, with Wednesday's 6-3 win over the Battlefords North Stars giving them a 2 point lead on Notre Dame for the final playoff spot, with 2 games in hand.

The Mils didn't make it easy on themselves. They trailed 1-0 after one period of play, but took a 2-1 lead after two. That turned into 3-1 early in the third, but before they knew it, the Stars scored two goals in less than a minute to square it at 3.

Three late third period goals made it a 6-3 final, and Mark Owen (pictured) led the charge with a goal and three assists. 6 different Millionaires found the net, with Owen, Godric Tham, Michael Desjarlais, Roger Tagoona, Connor Lowe-Wylde and Ian McNulty rounding it out. Mike Rogoschewsky had 2 assists. 4 of their goals came from 18-year-old rookies.

The Mils pulled up Jeff Hubic, a big D-Man from the Tisdale Trojans for the game. Coach Jamie Fiesel said on Wednesday's Coach's Show that Hubic's heading to Kootenay to AP with the Ice later in the week. 17-year-old Dayton Reinboldt has also joined the Mils full time from the Swift Current Legionnaires.

All eyes are now on the weekend home-and-home between the Millionaires and Yorkton Terriers. Catch our final "Robin's Roundtable" of the season with Don Chesney and Jamie Fiesel from 7:00 to 7:30 tonight (THU) at Robin's Donuts in Melville. What a weekend it's going to be! Both teams need points, for different reasons. Should be a beauty!

*Estevan may not be out of the first place conversation just yet. The Bruins beat Melfort 3-2 (SO) on Wednesday, and 7 of their final 8 games are against teams with worse records than them... Notre Dame (3), Weyburn (2), Melville, Humboldt. Their other game is against Yorkton on home ice. IF they run the table, they'd finish with 71 points... Yorkton has 66 now, so the Bruins would need a lot of help to finish on top... but they're now ahead of a slumping Weyburn team, and are 7 back of 2nd place Kindersley with two in hand. Okay I admit, switching back and forth between the SJ & MJ standings made me think for a half second that the Bruins had 12 games left (to finish with 62 like in Manitoba)... 8 is a little different story when they're 11 points back... but they surely have the easiest schedule on paper of any team in the top 3.

The Yorkton Harvest dismantled the Notre Dame "AAA" Hounds 8-2 on Wednesday. Ben Johnstone led the Harvest with 4g-2a. Dustin Skilliter added 1g-3a.

That was the first of five straight games on the road for the Harvest. Their next action is Sunday afternoon in Tisdale. Yorkton's in 8th spot right now, and SHOULD make the playoffs, with a 10 point lead on 9th place Swift Current.
