SJ Showcase in the Books

A win and a loss for our local teams to wrap up the SJHL Showcase in Weyburn on Sunday.

The Yorkton Terriers kicked things off with a 2-1 decision over Flin Flon. The Terriers took the ice roughly 16 hours after beating Melfort 3-1 the night before.

Craig Eisenhut and Clarke Breitkreuz scored for the Terriers, while Warren Shymko made 33/34 saves to earn the win. Devin Peters had started Yorkton's previous 7 games, and Shymko stepped in against a dangerous Bomber team and never missed a beat.

One note of concern was that Robbie Ciolfi didn't play. He suffered an injury at the end of the Melfort game, and after taking warmup, he wasn't able to play against Flin Flon.

No word yet how long the injury could keep him out.

The good news though, is the Terriers (22-8-1-3) have 9 days off. Hopefully that's enough to get them healthy. They're back in action Wednesday, December 15th at home against Melfort, before hosting Humboldt on the 17th, and travelling to Weyburn on the 18th, before breaking for another 2 weeks for Christmas.

They're now 7-0-0-1 in their last 8 games, and have just one regulation loss in their last 13.

-------------

The Melville Millionaires came flying out of the gates, but couldn't do a lot right after the first period, in a 3-1 loss to Melfort.

Brayden Metz opened the scoring for Melville, his 15th of the season, and it stayed 1-0 after one. It certainly could have been more, with the Mils holding a 13-1 edge on the shot clock at one point.

The rest of the way, Melfort carried most of the play, and an 0/7 powerplay did the Millionaires in.

Two close games, but just one of a possible four points in at the Showcase for Melville.

They also didn't get much help from teams around them. Estevan got 3 points, Weyburn got 4, and Kindersley got 2, which leaves the Mils a little further from 2nd, 3rd, and 4th than when they went into the weekend.

The Mils hit the halfway point of their schedule at 13-14-0-2, leaving them 4 points out of 4th (with 3 games in hand on Kindersley), 5 out of 3rd (with 1 game in hand on Weyburn) and 6 out of 2nd.

Melville's home to Notre Dame on Tuesday, and will be without Lucas Froese, who'll be in Dauphin for the CJHL Prospects Games in Dauphin.
