Four Goal First Lifts Mils Over Terriers

Roger Tagoona scored two goals in the first nine minutes of the game, and the Melville Millionaires led 4-0 after the first period, in a 5-1 win in Yorkton Thursday night.

Lucas Froese and Michael Desjarlais also notched first period goals, while Brayden Metz added a third period powerplay goal as part of a 3 point night. Cody Hanson also had 3 assists, and Justin Hollinger had two helpers. Just for good measure, I asked Mils' Coach/GM Jamie Fiesel on our Post Game Show one last time if he'll reconsider keeping his top 20 year olds, after they lit it up in Yorkton... and he said they still plan to deal the likes of Metz and Hanson for sure, maybe more (post-game interview below).

A short-handed goal by Clarke Breitkreuz early in the third period was all that separated Zach Rakochy from his 2nd shutout of the season. The goal was the 20th of the season for Breitkreuz, and in my time at GX, no Terrier has hit that plateau that fast. The only other Terrier to do it was Jordan Menke last season, and he did it in the last game of the season. Kyle Block, Derek Serdachny and Torey Stott all came close in previous years, but never did hit 20 (in my time here... Serdachny scored 22 when he was just 18, the year before I got here).

The last Terrier to score 25 goals was Chad Nehring, who scored exactly 25 in 2006-07. Chris Korchinski was the last to score 30, when he notched 33 in 2005-06. A handful of Terriers could give those numbers a run, but I think Justin Keller's 42 in 2003-04 is safe! For the record, current coach Trent Cassan potted 32 that same year!

Back to the game, Rakochy stopped 29/30 shots in the win for Melville. Devin Peters was pulled after allowing 4 goals on 9 shots for the Terriers, but there were a couple deflections and 2 PP goals in there... certainly not his fault. Warren Shymko stopped 15/16 in relief.

The two clubs do it all over again Saturday at 2:00 in Melville.

I think with the events of last week and the long layover, the Terrier's heads just weren't in the game last night.

I totally think that we will see a different Terrier team this Saturday in Melville!!!
