Tuesday August 31, 2010, Ladner, BC - After 2 days of rookie camp and another 2 days of main camp, the Vancouver Giants held their first of two intra-squad games Tuesday night at the Ladner Leisure Centre. Last season’s leading scorer Brendan Gallagher picked up right where he left off last year, scoring a pair of goals en route to Team Grey beating Team Black 7-3.
Each period was broken down to work on specific areas. The first 20 minutes was strictly 5-on-5 hockey. No goals were scored, as both Mark Segal and Brendan Jensen were solid in net.
The 2nd period was all about special teams, as each team had two 5-minute power plays. Craig Cunningham opened the scoring for Team Grey on their first power play. Team Black’s James Henry evened the score, beating Scott Legault for a shorthanded marker. Jordan Martinook put Team Grey back in front with a shorthanded goal of his own to give Team Grey a 2-1 lead after 40 minutes.
The 3rd period is where things really opened up. The first 10 minutes was 4-on-4. Import Marek Tvrdon scored a breakaway goal for Team Grey to give them a 3-1 lead. Team Black blueliner Tyler Hart cut the lead to one, banging in a rebound after a nice James Henry rush. Team Grey restored their 2-goal lead as RJ Reed went roof on Derek Tendler.
The final 10 minutes was back to even strength. Clarke Breitkreuz made it 5-2 Team Grey. Brendan Gallagher then scored a pair of goals to give Team Grey a commanding 7-2 lead. Matt Bellerive added one more for Team Black, but they would come up well short. Team Grey won 7-3.
Team Black did manage to win the shootout 4-2. Matt Mackay, Brett Kulak, Matt Bellerive, and David Musil scored for Team Black. RJ Reed and Austin Vetterl had the goals for Team Grey.

Voice of the Kelowna Rockets Regan Bartel reports that former MJHLer Zach Franko has committed to the Rockets for this season. Franko put up 54 points in 51 games with the Winnipeg South Blues last season as a 16-year-old, and told me on "Inside The MJHL" last year he'd likely return to the Blues this season, OR go to the USHL for one year, before accepting his full-ride NCAA Division I scholarship to Bemidji State.
Obviously a change of heart, but he's proven he's an elite player in his age group, and probably has the tools to play in the 'Dub, and pro at a young age.
Franko was one of the top players for Team West at last year's World Jr 'A' Challenege and was a treat to talk to.
Inside the MJHL WILL BE returning, by the way. First show will be ready the week of the regular season opener. Haven't decided who'll be on just yet, but have some ideas.
