Pre-Season Chat: Wayway's Joe Carney

Me
Joe, it's your last day at home in Minnesota... then it's off to Wayway Monday. It's year three for you in the 'MJ', are you getting used to being north of the border for a good chunk of the year?

Joe
Yeah definitly, I really consider it a second home for me. I enjoy it there and would love to be able to play a few more years in the MJ.

Me
You've made a few stops in Junior, but I remember you telling me last year the team, your billets, the coaches, were all top notch in Wayway last season. You really came to enjoy it last year despite a tough season as a team didn't you?

Joe
Yeah, I can't say enough good things about the organization in Wayway. They treat us like we're professionals and the billets are great they're like family.

Me
You lost 3 great 20 year olds from last season in Grose, Regel and Kelsey, but ONLY three graduates. Do you think this will be a more experienced version of the Wolverines in 2010-11?

Joe
Yes, I think our team is strong in net with Gangon returning and or D core is experienced so I think we are in good shape to make some noise this year.

Me
For you personally, a 20-year-old returning guy, do you take more of a leadership role?

Joe
I think all of the 20 year olds will be looked apon for leadership and we have a couple 19 year olds with 3 years of experience already too. I just look to battle hard every night to set and example.

Me
And finally Joe, you and Dave Williams were the only two Wolverines to play in all 62 games last season. Take us through your off-season training as get get your body set for another grinding season.

Joe
Well for me the off season started about 2 weeks after our trip to OCN in febuary. For me I spend about 4 -5 days a week in the weightroom and come june through august I try to get on the ice as much as posible. So far it's been a pretty good off season

Rumor going around that your hat is going into the ring for the S.C. Broncos job. Any truth? I think you'd be a great fit.

I know about as much as you do!

I haven't verbally spoken to anyone in Swift Current... I assume Rod feels I'm a candidate because I used to work in that chain (Golden West Radio- Moose Jaw).

If something comes up I'd look long and hard at a WHL position but it'd have to be a perfect fit with me having a young family and a place in Yorkton. I'm also quite sure there will be SEVERAL applications, with this being the last WHL opening of the summer.

All I know as of now is I'm at the Gallagher Centre trying to help sell Terrier season tickets and I'm employed at GX94!
