Monday Musings: One Month Away

Not to put you down in the dumps right off the hop, but I'm calling this week a 'BLAAAAAHHH Week'. All I really look forward to this time of year, being done with baseball, hockey's not here yet, is Rider games, and this week is the dreaded West Division Bye-Week. So not only are the Riders off, so is the entire West, and we're stuck with just 2 CFL games... Winnipeg-Montreal on Thursday... Hamilton-Toronto on Friday.

-----

Think it'll be a Riders-Stamps West Final and Als-Argos in the East? It'll take a massive uspet somewhere along the line for that NOT to happen, because the drop-off between the top 4 and bottom 4 is BIG.

-----

My Fantas-Eh (CFL Fantasy Football) team had a dramatic come-from-behind win this week, much in thanks to Calgary receiver Nik Lewis (who I despise). I'm now 6-and-1, first place, and hoping to erase memories of my last-place finish in our NHL Playoff office pool.

-----

Happened to notice my blog hits BOOMING on Friday night.

Someone, somewhere, saw my interview with Yorkton product Jordan Matechuk of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, and linked it to a live game blog of the Ti-Cats/Bombers game on Friday. It was called "The Scratching Post"

Belated congratulations to Darcy Zaharia and his wife Amber on the birth of their little boy. I believe Facebook said his name is Jay Arthur. Darcy works a couple floors below, and a couple salary brackets above me for Sask Finance, same building as the Radio Station. I know him better as Offensive Line Coach of the Yorkton Regional Raiders Football team. Former Offensive Co-ordinator of the Raiders Mark Schendel and his wife also had a little boy (Max) in June. So that Raider team's looking good for the 2025 season when those two step in! Head Coach Roby Sharpe says athletic ability skips a generation so those little guys should be good! Sharpie and I both had girls in the last few months.

Melville Cobras Football registration is this Thurdsay. Junior Registration (Grades 8 & 9) starting at 12:00. Senior Registration (Grades 10-12) starts at 2:00, followed by Practice at 4:00. Contact Coach John Svenson for more info at 728-3062.

Much like Foam Lake did last year, the Cobras will rent lights and play an exhibition game, Friday Night Lights style against Foam Lake August 27th, starting at 8:30 pm.

The Swift Current Indians are 2010 WMBL Champions. After a couple rainouts, the league changed the final from Best-of-Five to Best-of-Three, and the Tribe beat Regina 2-0.

Other local ball still going on... the Tri-Highway Fastball League is going to a 5th and deciding game, after the Rhein Rockets beat the Grenfell Gems 2-1 yesterday. They've now erased a 2-0 series deficit and will play Game 5 on Tue/Aug/24, with many of Grenfell's players teaming up with Balcarres for the North American Fastball Championships, beginning this week in Des Moines, Iowa.

The South East Men's Fastball League is scheduled to start tomorrow (TUE) between the two-time defending champion Broadview Buffs and the Fleming Sr Jets.

Fear not, hockeys' coming quick!

This week, I'll be composing season previews for the Yorkton Terriers and Melville Millionaires for the SJHL Overtime Magazine. I'll likely post them here so you can have a sneak peek. Mitchell Blair is going to do good things for the SJHL, after being named Communications Director earlier this month. He's got a long resume in the media biz, and is no stranger to writing, as he also writes for the Riders on http://www.riderville.com/ ... (where you can also vote for Yorkton as Riderville!). I added his blog "Blair Necessities" to my list along the right side, with a few others.

Do you like the "hockey ice" look on the border?

Blogger's got some new templates, and I'm still experimenting a little.

-----

Swan Valley Stampeders' rookie camp starts this Friday already. They'll run a hockey school next week, and follow that up with Main Camp.

For their Hockey School, there are experienced instructors for all ages, including females and goalies. It's a full day program for all 5 days, including 2 on-ice sessions, dry land, theory, and a fun activity each day.

Contact Stamps' GM Guy Vestby to sign to up, at (204) 734-PUCK.

It all starts for real a month from today. The Melville Millionaires host the Estevan Bruins on Thursday, September 16th... the first Jr 'A' game in Saskatchewan or Manitoba this season. The Mils are handing out free tickets to Melville school students, and the game will be shown live on Access 7, and we'll also have all the action on GX94, our first of 50+ regular season Jr 'A' games this season. Our schedule is available by clicking on the GX logo in the top-right corner.

-----

A week from today... the Yorkton Terriers' SEASON TICKET BLITZ happens at the Gallagher Centre. Usually runs from about 7am to 6pm, and I'm on location throughout. Prices are dirt cheap for Children and Youth this year, so make sure you book while Early Bird prices are in effect. You also get free breakfast, lunch, or supper when you buy your tickets during the August 23rd Blitz.

And finally, the word "epic." YES, it's kind of a cool word, and really rolls off the tongue, but c'mon people, not everything is EPIC! It seems I hear it spoken by someone everyday, and it's in every second Facebook status!

Have an EPIC week!

Hey Craig, loved your comment last Friday after you ran the Geroy Simon interview where he said "hey we just didn't play good enough, we lost" and you said "you sure did Geroy!" Love it!! That cocky SOB got exactly what he deserved.
