LA RONGE-- The Yorkton Terriers and La Ronge Ice Wolves got used to overtime in these playoffs long before the Credit Union Cup series began, but just for good measure, they made sure they went to the extra frame in Game 1.
Blaine Tendler scored at 5:03 on a one-timer that found it's way in off a faceoff.
Dan Conacher opened the scoring for La Ronge, and the Ice Wolves led 1-0 after the first period.
Former Ice Wolf Adam Moar got the Terriers back on even terms with his 6th of the playoffs in his return to the Mel Hegland Uniplex, and Troy Smukowich potted his league-leading 13th of the SJHL Playoffs, giving the Terriers the lead, but not for long. Liam Brennan answered just 54 seconds later, and it was 2-2 after 40 minutes.
Moar continued his outstanding return to La Ronge with his second of the game, but again, the Wolves would tie it back up before the third period was up.
In overtime, the Ice Wolves started with consistent pressure in the Terrier zone, but took an icing call during a long shift, and had burned their timeout in the third period. The Terriers went back to the line that scored all their goals (Moar-Smukowich-Zubko). Smukowich won the draw, Zubko put it back to Austin Bourhis, who set up Tendler's one-timer. Game over.
Terriers win 4-3 (OT), with Game 2 Saturday in La Ronge (7:00 / 7:30 on GX94).
My 3 stars on the radio were
1) YOR Moar 2g
2) LAR Brennan 1g-1a
3) Tendler 1g (OT)
Nothing against any of them, but as soon as I got off the air, I thought... DEVIN PETERS! When I'm on my own, I basically have to pick stars, etc, on the fly, because my colour guy often does that. But Peters definitely should have been a star in Game 1. He faced 19 shots in the third period alone, and 46 in the game (43 svs). He made one acrobatic stop when he appeared to be down and out in the second period, and that led to Moar's go-ahead goal to make it 3-2. Cody Zubko's an honourable mention too, with 3 assists.
La Ronge has gone to overtime 8 times of the 16 playoff games they've had (4-and-4 record), while the Terriers just played their 7th overtime game in 17 games (5-and-2 record).
Blaine Tendler in Overtime
Sorry, no woo-hoo's tonight... a HUGE goal... but it's only Game 1. Gotta pace myself!
