Stampeders Off To Round 2!

PORTAGE LA PRAIRIE-- Myles Stevens scored twice and the Swan Valley Stampeders thumped Portage 6-1, to go to the Sherwood Final for the second time in team history, against the Dauphin Kings.

Stevens scored the only goal of the first period, Chris Reimer made it 2-0 Swan early in the second, before Cody Kostecki got Portage to within one and it was 2-1 after two frames.

I thought it'd be a nail-biting finish, until Swan scored THREE goals in 35 seconds early in the third. Connor Pennell at 2:48, Ryan Marshall at 3:08, and Stevens' second of the game at 3:23.

Carter Selinger added a late one for the 6-1 final.

The Stampeders will face Dauphin in the Sherwood Division Final, most likely beginning Friday in Dauphin.

I chuckled when I came back to my vehicle to find a fan had written GO KINGS on all four of the truck's windows and windshield, until I saw the deragatory comment on the windshield about a Stampeder player. Some people.

Portage did a great job representing the MJHL as league champions the last 2 seasons, and they don't come any classier than Coach/GM of the Terriers Blake Spiller. Always a treat to talk to Blake, and although he jokingly blamed me before and after the game for the series results (I broadcasted all 4 Swan wins and not their one loss!), it was a pleasure dealing with him this series. I couldn't help but notice he was up in the booth across the way on the Post Game Show with Voice of the Terriers Jeff Dyck immediately after shaking hands. Good guy that Spiller, who's originally from Bredenbury.

I'll have some Post Game Audio with Dwayne Kirkup, Guy Vestby, Myles Stevens and Jayme Janzen in the next day or so. For now, spending the night in Portage before a quick Sunday afternoon Winnipeg trip with my wife, then back to Yorkton, or Weyburn really, on Monday!
