The first edition of nine Highway 10 battles this season went the way of the Terriers, as the home team scored 3 first period goals in a 4-2 win over the Melville Millionaires.
Torey Stott opened the scoring, and Cody Zubko added two quick ones, putting the Terriers up 3-0 less than 9 minutes into the game.
The Mils had a great start to the second period, with Matt Kinnunen and Michael Jordan scoring within 1:30 of eachother to make it 3-2, but Terrier rookie Nathan Murray restored the two goal lead just 57 seconds later with his first SJHL goal.
I caught up with Murray after the game about his first Junior 'A' tally.

listened to the radio after game (postgame ramble)and heard mention of rebounds Rakochy gave up during the first period onslaught, have to disagree (preface with experience as triple a midget, junior a and some whl) when a goalie makes a stop with 2 or more guys on his doorstep the least he should expect is 24 inches of safe realestate to control his rebound (that was my job to provide back in the day) On either goal he had somebody stuffing rebounds closer than that, one case about 10 inches. I was behind the net at the time. And some mention of the shots on goal should have accompanied. One final point is that of shots on goal, as always been the case the home team benefits somwhat, at the end of the first the shots on the Melville goal was in the low 20's but in the second when Melville got some shots i noticed that at least 4 of the dump ins were considered shots, by virtue of the board, but in the first the first there were occaisons where the Terriers had a flurry of 3 shots and i looked up and one and at most 2 were counted, my bottom line is that the 16 year old was responsible for his team staying in and having a chance in the second, the Peters in the Yorkton net never had to make a doorstep save until he had been beaten on one in the second and he played well after that. But never faced the amount of quality chances and the shots on goal might indicate. My shot total would have given Melville to have 28 shots against at the end of the first and in the second 4 shots less against the Terriers.
Rakochy's a great young goalie and i hope i didn't come across as saying otherwise. I think said in the post-game (ramble) that he let out a few big rebounds early (that didn't even lead to goals) and really settled down after that. agreed, there was much he could do about the goals (stott off the end boards, zubko deflection). As far as shots on goal... there are always complaints... in every rink!
*wasn't* much he could do on the goals... pardon the typo.
