Colton Graf scored in the dying seconds and the Battlefords North Stars got their first win of the season Thursday, edging the Yorkton Terriers 4-3.
The Terriers led 2-0 thanks to first period goals from Kirk Byczynski and Torey Stott, but the Stars charged back in the second, scoring 2 of their own, by Alex Leclerc and Dane Muench. Leclerc added his second of the night early in the third, and Evan Neibrandt tied it at 3 with less than 5 minutes to go. Graf then tipped in a Shawn McNulty shot on the powerplay with 18.3 seconds left.
There were 4 scraps in the game, 3 of which the Terriers were penalized for instigating, including with 2:02 left when Captain Derek Serdachny squared off with the Stars' Josh Clare, who knocked Greg Coburn out of the game with a hit. A hit Coach Ed Zawatsky felt should have been called.
"We're six games in so I'm trying to keep my emotions intact. But it's unfortunate we're playing in a league where a guy gets his head rammed into the boards and left on an unfair hit where we end up getting an instigator and lose the game because of it. It happened at home against Weyburn when we lost a guy (David Skagen) and now we could end up losing Coburn. I dunno, the officials told me they didn't see it. (Corey Silverson)'s injured right now. I don't take kindly to their players laughing while one of our players is down. They say our guy (Rylan McDonnell) came off the bench, well he was the one who threw the pass over there (to Silverson), so I've got a lot of questions about tonight's game."
Yorkton's powerplay was 1-for-8 on the night, the Battlefords went 1-for-7. The Terriers out-shot the Stars 28-22. Joel Danyluk made 18 saves in the loss.
The Terriers managed 1 of a possible 4 points on their 2 game trip, and see their record move to 3-1-2, still tied with the Melville Millionaires for second in the Sherwood.
Yorkton's next action is this Saturday when they host La Ronge (7:30 @ Farrell Agencies Arena).
