Season Preview: Wayway Wolverines

Wolverines' Coach/GM Barry Butler join us on this morning's Coach's Show to talk about their upcoming season. After beating the Melville Millionaires in their final Pre Season game 6-4 Monday night to finish with a 1-and-5 record.

CS: Barry, it's only pre season, but I'm sure it was nice to get that first win out of the way before the regular season starts.

BB: Yeah, it was good for the morale. We don't really use pre season for that, but it was wearing on a few people and it was nice to get it done. We basically use it to look at guys, we've got a lot of new faces, see who fits with who, who can play the penalty kill, who looks good on the powerplay. Those are the kinds of things we're looking at in pre season. Last night we finally got most of our older guys in there, we probably had 3 guys who'll be in our lineup who weren't in there, so that made a big difference too.

CS: Matt Kinsella played goal for all of each of the last two games both in Melville and at home last night, and I understand there's an injury situation in goal for you guys?

BB: Yeah, Deszi Wiens played exceptionally well in Swan River and got a minor injury, and he's away getting it doctored up right now. So we've got Matt here, and Carey Dyck, so it's fortunate for us we had 3 really good goaltenders in camp, so we've got Matt and Carey to start the season.

CS: Do you know what the prognosis is, how long Wiens could be out?

BB: No we don't. We're hopeful it's not very long. It didn't seem to be anything too serious. He hurt himself a little bit training during the summer, and just reaggravated it here, and we thought it'd be better to have it diagnosed properly now, early in the season, rather than letting it carry on, so that's where Deszi is right now.

CS: Now with Kinsella playing those last two games, does that mean he starts Saturday in Swan?

BB: That's probably a pretty good indication, but we'll see how practice goes for the rest of the week.

CS: How 'bout the Stampeders? They did lose their top 2 scorers from last year, but other than that they return a lot of guys. What do you expect out of them?

BB: Looking at them, they're looking like they'll have a pretty balanced hockey club, they'll be very good in goal with Ward. I think it's going to be a pretty good matchup. In the Pre Season it was an overtime loss over there, and we had a pretty young lineup going when we played them at home. So we're expecting to be fairly evenly matched, and look forward to a great home and home opening series.

And according to my SiteMeter, the person left the comment from Guangdong, China. I should delete it but will let it stand for humour sake. Only comment on this story if you're interested in the Wayway Wolverines' upcoming season, that goes for you too, "Good Girl!"
