It was a pair of pitcher's duels in Sunday's double header between the Yorkton Cardinals and Okotoks Dawgs. The two teams combined for just 4 runs in the two games, which were supposed to be two 7 inning affairs. In the first game, Yorkton took the early lead with a run in the 2nd inning, but the defending champs from Okotoks got 2 in the 5th, and the game ended 2-1. The back half of the twin bill needed more than 7 innings, as it was scoreless right up until the bottom of the 10th, when RF Taylor Lee took the second pitch he saw deep over the wall in right field for the walk-off home run, and a 1-0 Cardinals' victory.
"Feels awesome," says Lee, "I've been struggling the last few games, so this was awesome. I knew he was going to throw a strike, he'd been around the plate all day, so I was just swinging. It felt good, I got it off the end a bit so I was going down the line pretty hard, but I had an idea it was gone."
"Taylor has got a very good swing," says Cardinals' Head Coach Bill Sobkow, "He didn't play baseball in the spring because he red shirted. But he swings very good, he attacks the ball and has a lot of power. I'd like to bat him higher in the order than we normally do. Probably for the next week or two we'll bat him down in the order a bit, and then put him higher."
Chris Cox took the loss in the first game, surrending both Okotoks runs, while Thomas Berolzheimer took the W in game two, pitching the final three innings, and getting out of a runners on the corners with one out situation in the ninth inning. The first 6 innings were pitched by Buster Mueller, and almost flawlessly, giving up no runs on just two hits.
The Cards record is now 11-13 after Sunday's split, and they've got 3 straight road games coming up. They're in Saskatoon Tuesday and Wednesday, then head to Weyburn for a double header on Thursday, before returning home to face Swift Current Saturday and Sunday.
