Neudorf Commemorates Fastball Dominance

Neudorf, SK native Len Gottinger gave me a call to let me know about a sign the town has recently constructed about Neudorf's successful history in the game of fastball. Neudorf-based teams won 12 provincial titles from 1977-2006, starting with the 1977 Juvenile Boys Neudorf Red Sox. The next 11 were all won between 1988-2006.

"I just want to tell people that with all those teams, the writing got a little smaller than we wanted it to, you almost can blow right by it, but anyone who played on these teams or is interested, it's just off Main Street on a row of signs, and if you slow down to read it, it's actually quite interesting."

The most successful season came in 2001, when Neudorf won not one, not two, but THREE different titles (Jr. B Men's, Pee Wee Open Boys, Bantam Open Boys). Gottinger says that was a special year.

"There was a lot of buzz. We obviously don't have that many kids in Neudorf, so there were out of town kids to make the teams, but a lot of local content. It is a pretty amazing feat when you think about it to win 3 categories in the same year like that, it's something that I assume will never be repeated."

"Again, I just want to make people aware of it. If you're coming through and ever played on any of these teams, just stop and take a look and I'm sure you'll get some fond memories just by seeing the teams on the list."
