Melville's Green Monster

At 5'10", 175 lbs, Texas product James Green isn't a monster in terms of stature, but when it comes to scoring runs, he sure is.

In Sunday's 19-9 win in Regina, the Melville Millionaires' leadoff man came to the plate seven times, went 1-for-1, and scored FIVE times.

1st Inning: Hit by Pitch, scored

2nd Inning: Walked, scored

3rd Inning: Single, scored

4th Inning: Walked, scored

6th Inning: Walked

8th Inning: Walked, scored

9th Inning: Walked

"I've never seen anything like that, five walks and five runs in one game," says Mils' Coach Garnet Keller. "He won't swing at a bad pitch, he's very patient, and he is a great hitter so no, they don't want to give him anything to hit. But when we've got Brandon Morgan, Sean Gaughan, Matt Warr, Josh Corriea and Paul Lamantia hitting after him, we're happy to have him on base all the time."

The Mils' centrefielder leads his team at this point with 17 walks, stolen bases (11) and on-base percentage of .506. His .345 batting average is 3rd best on the team behind Matt Warr (.351) and Josh Corriea (.439).

He plays his college ball with the University of Houston Victoria Jaguars. Check out his numbers here.

Yorkton Dynamite under 14 girls soccer team, made up of players from Canora, Saltcoats and Yorkton, concluded a short spring season with a third place finish at the Regina Summerfest Tournament on the weekend.

Dynamite were shut out 2-0 by a Winnipeg team in their opening game Friday but went on to complete the round robin with a record of two wins,a tie and the one loss.
Dynamite won a pair of Saturday games shutting out Weyburn and Brandon by 1-0 scores.Their final game Sunday was a 1-1 draw with Swift Current.

Other game notes:

Dynamite played the tournament with only two spare players and for the Weyburn game played with no extra bodies (games are played 11 a side at this level).
Dynamite is coached by Dale Domres (dom rays) and Lisa Otto. Jeanne Fetsch is the manager. The team has played together for at least parts of three seasons - this year was shortened to just May and June although some of the players will link with other teams for summer play. Dynamite consists of players from Saltcoats and Canora, as well as Yorkton. Last year several players joined in from Melville. The team would be interested in hearing from girls in the region who may be interested in playing soccer next year.

It's wedding season (and I'm part of it this year), and starting today I'm out of town every weekend for a long, long time. I've got the bachelor party in Saskatoon tomorrow for starters, then 3 different weddings in consecutive weeks in July, mine being the third. Despite several married men and their "don't do it!" advice... I think I'm still going through with it! They're just joking around anyway. Aren't they?

So obviously I won't be at tonight's Cards/Mils game in Melville, but I'm looking forward to the Canada Day matchup in Yorkton. It's a 7:05 start... I was kinda hoping for 2:00... Oh well.

===============

I'm going home to the farm tonight, mainly so I don't spend $$$ two nights in a row... and to watch the NHL Draft. As a Leafs' fan, even if Brian Burke doesn't do what he wants (move up, get Tavares), he's sure making it interesting with all the trade talk and draft talk. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see Tavares wear Blue & White, I'm just not as optimistic as "some" Leaf fans. *Cough* Ron Rimer *Cough*. One trade rumour has the Leafs sending Kaberle AND their 7th overall pick to Boston for Phil Kessel. It it was Kaberle/Kessel straight up then fine, but that's too big a price with their first rounder I think.

Can the Islanders seriously justify NOT taking Tavares? Rumour has it they might take Matt Duchene. If they think they need a defenseman, then you can understand going with Hedman over Tavares, but Garth Snow can't tell me Duchene's a better forward than JT. The Islanders are a goofy organization though... if a two-way centre's their cup of tea instead of a perennial 40-50 goal guy... that's fine. They did pass on Dany Heatley last time they held the #1 pick... another perennial 40-50 guy.

Mils/Cards Swing & Miss on the Road

The Yorkton Cardinals and Melville Millionaires had just 3 hits each as they both were on the wrong end of decisions on the road Wednesday night.

The Cardinals dropped a 6-4 final to Moose Jaw.

Andrew Haake hit a 2-run homer, his 3rd jack of the year to supply the bulk of the offense. Mark Magdaleno and Garrett Brown had the other hits. Cory McEvoy pitched the first 4 innings, Andrelton Simmons got the loss, tossing the next 3, while Dillon Wilson took the hill for the 9th.

- Melville, after a 19-hit outburst the night before in Swift Current, managed only 3 in a 6-3 loss in Medicine Hat. All 3 runs were scored with one swing of the bat, as Josh Corriea smacked a 3-run shot, his first of the year, giving him a team-high 14 RBI's. Matt Warr and James Green had the other two hits on the night.

Saskatoon Yellow Jackets 3 @ Weyburn Beavers 10
Edmonton Prospects 6 @ Regina Red Sox 14
Lethbridge Bulls 1 @ Okotoks Dawgs 15

Nesbitt Earns First WMBL 'W' / MJHL Schedule Breakdown

Pitching 1.2 innings of relief, Willowbrook's Tyson Nesbitt registered his first win in the Western Major Baseball League as his Yorkton Cardinals scored 4 runs in the top of the 9th inning to come from behind and beat Regina 6-3, becoming the league's 4th team to reach the 10 win plateau. It took them just 16 games to do it.

J.J. Leaper got the save for Yorkton, pitching the entire 9th inning, while their usual closer, Chris Byford started the game, and struck out 9 batters, while giving up 3 runs, 2 of them earned, on 4 hits and walked 2.

At the plate, 2B Jarrod Ivan was 2-for-4 with a run scored. Mark Magdaleno had 2 RBI's. Jordan Herbison, normally a pitcher, went 1-for-1 with an RBI and a run scored.

The Cardinals head to Moose Jaw tomorrow (WED), while the Melville Millionaires (7-4) are in Swift Current tonight. Check back for the Mils' Weekly Coach's Show with Garnet Keller.

TSN.ca is reporting Detroit Red Wings' Coach Mike Babcock will be introduced as the Canadian Olympic team coach in 2010 at a news conference on Thursday. Since watching most of his press conferences through the playoffs I'm pretty sure there's no better choice. Love hsi attitude and how he deals with the media.

=============

Also on TSN, Bob McKenzie has John Tavares as the #1 ranked prospect going into this Friday's NHL Entry Draft in Montreal. But he also thinks the New York Islanders are leaning towards taking Swedish defenseman Victor Hedman with that first overall pick. The Tampa Bay Lightning pick 2nd, Colorado 3rd. Brian Burke and the Toronto Maple Leafs are lurking in the weeds with the 7th pick, but, still hoping to move up.

Hope to see some of you Swan Valley Stampeder fans at tonight's AGM at the Westwood Inn. It starts at 7:30 (MB Time), and it'll be my first chance to meet, and interview new Head Coach Dwayne Kirkup.

Cards/Mils Tear It Up on the Weekend

The Yorkton Cardinals and Melville Millionaires gained some breathing room atop the WMBL's East Division over the weekend, both playing the Swift Current Indians and Lethbridge Bulls twice, and both winning 3 out of 4.

The Cardinals beat Lethbridge 4-1 Thursday, then knocked off Swift Current twice, 4-3 and 12-4... before falling 9-4 in 10 innings to Lethbridge yesterday afternoon.

Yorkton led 3 times in the game, but the Bulls would tie it one final time in the 8th, before tacking on 5 in the top of the 10th.

But, 3 out of 4 ain't bad, and the Cardinals are now 9-and-6 through 15 games.

Last night it was Garrett Brown leading the way offensively, as he had the night before against Swift Current... going 6-for-7 between Saturday and Sunday... with 5 RBI's, 5 Runs and a home run, lifting his average to .308.

The Cards are scheduled to go to Regina tonight... to start off 8 straight games away from home.

----------

Meantime in Melville, the Mils also went 3-for-4 against 2 of the league's top teams. They beat Lethbridge 4-3 on Friday, then 8-0 Saturday, thanks to a complete game, 6-hit shutout by Kevin Crumb.

Yesterday Melville split with Swift, winning 6-3, and losing 11-7. The Mils managed to crank out 9 hits in each game.

Paul Lamantia hit his team-leading 3rd homerun in the 6-3 win.

The Mils face the Indians again tomorrow... in Swift Current.

Melville's now 7-and-4, tied with Yorkton for 1st.

MJHL Schedule Officially Released

The MJHL Schedule was officially released yesterday.

The season starts Friday, September 11th with 2 games... Dauphin in Winnipeg to face the Saints, and OCN home to the Winnipeg South Blues.

Saturday, September 12th, the Swan Valley Stampeders and Waywayseecappo Wolverines hook up in Swan to kick off the season for both teams.

Tuesday, September 15th... the Stampeders are in OCN. And with the SJHL not starting until the following weekend, I would guess that Swan/OCN game will be our first broadcast. We can't do the Wayway/Swan game since it's a Saturday.

I'll look a little more into the schedule as far as Swan Valley and Wayway go next week... but here's the link if you haven't seen it yet.

Haake Helps Cards Jump to Top Spot / NHL Awards

Make it 3 straight wins for the Yorkton Cardinals.

The Cards passed their first Alberta test of the season with flying colours, with a 4-1 win over the Lethbridge Bulls.

First baseman Andrew Haake continued his run-producing, going 2-for-3 with 2 RBI's his 9th and 10th of the season. The next highest Cardinal has 4 RBI's. Aside from Runs Batted In, Haake also leads the club with a .342 batting average, 13 hits, 5 doubles, 2 home runs, 24 total bases and a .632 slugging percentage.

Also last night, Felix Brown was 1-for-3 with a run scored... Josh Simms 1-for-2 with an RBI.

On the mound, Levi Rhoades got the win, going 7 and 2 thirds, one run on 6 hits, struck out 3.
Then closer Chris Byford pitched the final inning and a third... struck out all four batters he faced.

Cardinals are now 7-and-5, first place in the East Division... they host league-leading Swift Current tonight (FRI) and tomorrow. Lethbridge is back in town Sunday.

AGM Recap: Chats With the Coach & Pres

Well, it's amazing how many people stay home when there's nothing negative to complain about!

Sorry, had to get that out of the way... but after last year's AGM required a change of venue to seat the 217 people in attendance... I'd guesstimate about 40 came out last night... and it was a very quick, and positive meeting.

Some highlights:

Terrier Board
Lyle Walsh- President (Year 2 of 2 yr term)
Larry Wells- VP/Governor (Year 2 of 2 yr term)
Bill Wright- Treasurer (Year 2 of 2 yr term)
Alan Hill- Secretary (Year 2 of 2 yr term)
Ron Pasloski- (Re-elected to 2 yr term)
Ward Brown- (New... 2 yr term)
Doug Buliss- (New... 2 yr term)

The Terriers have 7 board members as of now, 2 less than the usual 9.

- Marketing improved, keeping it local (Bill Foffinoff/Trent Cassan)
- Season ticket prices/Ticketmaster staying the same.
- Awaiting word from gov't regarding a grant for dressing room upgrades.
- Terriers made $57,995.97 in 2008-09. Their bottom line is now $37,019.19 to the good.
- Lotto was a sell-out for the first time ever, made an all-time high profit of nearly $90,000.
- Kirk Byczynski will attend minor pro camps in the summer.

Terrier AGM Tonight / Tuesday Results

The Yorkton Terriers hold their Annual General Meeting tonight (WED) at the Gallagher Centre Convention Centre starting at 7:00.

5 positions are open on the Terrier Executive for the coming season, and so far, Ron Pasloski has announced he'll run again, while Doug Buliss (Canadian Tire) and Ward Brown (Brown's Leisure World) will run for the first time. Unless something changes quickly (today), they'll likely be nominating executive members from the floor. GX94's Randy Atkinson will chair the meeting again this year.

I've had to explain this to a couple fans... the poll in the top right corner isnt' the "tell-all" of whether the Terriers will move their start times to 7:00 or stay at 7:30. Myself and my blog just don't have that kind of power. I'm sure it will be up for discussion tonight. And I think I've got the poll closing today at noon... it only lets each person (computer) vote once, but have your say and it'll be good for me to go by at least. For pretty much the whole time the poll's been up, it's been roughly two-thirds voting for 7:00, one-third for the status quo 7:30. Those who work until 6:00, and out-of-town referees have been the biggest demographics against the change. While those with young kids at the games, and those just wanting games to be over by 9:00ish of course would like to see earlier start times.

PLEASE VOTE... and do come tonight!

I'll be there, but feel a little bad about it, with my whole block of neighbours doing a mass "fence build" starting tonight. I'll lend my drill, and hopefully they'll leave something for me to do... if not, guess I'll have to make it up when the mass "grass laying" comes around.

The Girls downed the Sisler Spartans 42-10, before the Boys followed with a 57-15 performance against the Keldin Klippers.

Head Coach Jesse Dixon

The Girls went 9-3 during the season, scoring 364 points, while giving up just 68.

The Boys also went 9-3, scoring 377 for and allowing 142 against.

A closer look at the Yorkton Cardinals/Melville Millioniares weekends.

Yorkton:
2-3 record (5-5) for the season.

Friday: 8-3 L to Regina

Mark Magdaleno was 2-for-2, while Andrew Haake went 2-for-5 at the plate.

Saturday
10-7 L (19 innings) to Moose Jaw (completing of June 2nd's suspended game)

2-1 W over Moose Jaw

Chris Cox threw 7 innings of 1-hit ball, striking out 7 and walking one... but the win went to reliever Chris Byford, who threw the final two innings. The Cards out-hit the Millers 9-3, and Magdaleno, Garrett Brown and Felix Brown had 2 hits apiece... Pinch-hitter Blair Walters was issued a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the 9th for the win.

Sunday
8-5 L to Weyburn

Magdaleno was at it again, hitting a 3-run homer.

*Magdaleno went 5-for-9, .556 avg, with 1 HR, 3 RBI, 2 R in 3 games over the weekend. That lifts his average to .276, 2nd highest on the team behind Andrew Haake's .313.

11-8 W over Weyburn

Cards racked up 7 fourth inning runs. Garrett Brown was 2-for-4 with a home run. Elias Torres also had a pair of hits... and the 2-and-3 weekend leaves the Cards with a 5-and-5 record in the ever-so-tight East Division. Weyburn's 4-and-4... Regina's 4-and-5... while Melville leads the way at 4-and-1 after a pair of wins in Saskatoon Saturday and Sunday.

Melville

Saturday:
4-0 W over S'toon

Saturday was all about starting pitcher Kevin Crumb, who tossed a complete game shutout... 3 hits... 10 strikeouts and 1 walk. Matt Warr went 2-for-4 and the Mils put up 3 runs in the third.

Sunday: 9-8 W over S'toon

Millioniares almost let a 9-2 lead slip away... as the Jackets got 4 in the fifth, and 2 in the sixth to make it 9-8... however that's how things would end as Melville grabbed their 3rd straight win. Paul Lamantia added his second home run of the year for the Mils, and James Thelwell also went yard. Each team had 13 hits and the two clubs combined for 10 errors... 6 of which made by the Mils.

Zawatsky Talks About U16 Job

Yorkton Terriers' Coach/GM Ed Zawatsky will coach Team Saskatchewan's Under-16 Team at the inaugural Western Branch Challenge in Red Deer, AB October 28-November 2nd.

======================
========================

In other recent SJHL news... Melville Millionaires' defenseman Casey Dion has committed to the University of Wisconsin-Superior, NCAA Division III for the upcoming season. The Millionaires acquired Dion from the La Ronge Ice Wolves at last year's trade deadline, and in 52 games between La Ronge and Melville, the Colorado Springs, CO native put up 6-goals and 21-points. His biggest goal came in Game 4 of the Sherwood Conference final when he scored in double overtime against the Weyburn Red Wings to give the Mils a 3-1 series lead in a series they'd eventually win in 6 to capture their 2nd Conference title in the last 3 seasons.

Cardinals Get 'er Done With Small Ball

Aside from the Yorkton-Moose Jaw marathon of June 2nd that's still 7-7 after 18 innings (will be completed this Saturday)... the Yorkton Cardinals, in their 5th full game of the season last (TUE) night, scored a season-high 3 runs, to edge the Regina Red Sox 3-2 on the road. So far the Cardinals have lost 2-1, won 1-0, won 2-1, lost 3-2, and now won 3-2. They've scored, and given up just 9 runs in five games... but are now 3-and-2 to lead the East Division.

Mark Magdaleno went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, and drove in the game-winning run in the top of the 9th.

The Cardinals are off until Friday, when they'll start officially a 5 game, 3 day stretch. They'll host Regina Friday, then welcome Moose Jaw for a full game and the completion of that June 2nd showdown. Then Sunday they're off to Weyburn for an afternoon double header.

OH! And GOOD MORNING/AFTERNOON to my daily visitor(s) from Ventura, California! Is that you, Mr. Magdaleno? Any baseball fans from south of the border feel free to introduce yourselves at on the comments section. Good to see you're visiting!

I am a farm kid and know the importance of rain... and I understand the family farm back in Simpson, which had no rain since seeding ended May 28th, did get 1/2 an inch yesterday... so that's awesome. Let's have some summer now, with a little rain here and there.

I got a heck of a nice email from a very noteable MJHL coach who tells me he's not returning next season. Thanks to him this blog will break the news at no later than 8:30 this morning... check back for that.

SJHL Adopts Changes

The SJHL held its Annual meetings in Nipawin this past weekend, where it was decided a few new rules will be brought in for the 2009-10 season.

Laury Ryan talks about the rule changes/Showcase... Tracy Cook goes over the new 4-man referee system the SJHL will introduce to mirror the WHL/NHL.

- Teams can no longer make changes after icing the puck.

- Teams will play 4-on-4 after coincidental penalties.

- Face-offs will always occur in the offensive zone when a team begins a powerplay.

- The league's goal is to have 20% of games worked by 4 on-ice officials (2 referrees, 2 linesmen)

SJHL President Laury Ryan

- Ryan added the league schedule is tentatively set, and will be released within the next 2 weeks. The regular season is scheduled to begin Friday, September 18th.

Yorkton's Zaba Re-Signs With NYR

(From http://www.theahl.com/)

Rangers ink goaltender Zaba
06/05/2009 8:08 AM

New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that the club has agreed to terms with goaltender Matt Zaba.

Zaba, 25, appeared in 41 games with the Hartford Wolf Pack of the American Hockey League (AHL), posting a record of 25-10-0, along with a 2.33 goals against average, a .920 save percentage and two shutouts. The AHL rookie ranked among the league leaders in several categories, including seventh in goals against average, tied for eighth in save percentage and tied for 12th in wins. He made his AHL debut on October 18 at Toronto, and earned his first career AHL win on November 1 vs. Albany. On January 9, he recorded his first AHL shutout with a 40-save effort at Springfield.

Named the AHL Goaltender of the Month for February, Zaba registered a season-high, seven-game winning streak from February 20 at Lowell to March 4 vs. Worcester, posting a 1.53 goals against average and a .952 save percentage during the stretch. He closed out the regular season with a 14-2-0 mark, along with a 1.84 goals against average, a .937 save percentage and one shutout in 16 contests. In addition, Zaba appeared in six playoff games with Hartford, posting a 2-4-0 record with a 3.17 goals against average, a .908 save percentage and one shutout.

In 2007-08, Zaba appeared in 28 games with the Charlotte Checkers and Idaho Steelheads of the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL), registering a record of 15-8-2, along with a 2.64 goals against average, .915 save percentage and three shutouts.

The 6-1, 185-pounder, appeared in 110 career games in four seasons with the Colorado College Tigers of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) prior to signing with the Rangers, posting a 55-42-10 record, along with a 2.42 goals against average. As a senior in 2006-07, he was named winner of the Thayer Tutt Award as team MVP, and was selected to the All-WCHA Academic Team for the third consecutive season. In 2005-06, Zaba recorded 20 wins and four shutouts, both collegiate career-highs. As a freshman in 2003-04, he turned in a 10-10-2 record, along with a personal-best 2.27 goals against average and was selected to the WCHA All-Rookie Team. He was named National Rookie of the Month after posting a 3-0-2 record, along with a 1.35 goals against average and a .941 save percentage in five starts in November 2003.

The Yorkton, Saskatchewan native signed a professional contract with the Rangers on August 20, 2007.

Trades!

- 20-year-old Rhein, SK product Evan Neibrandt (pictured) has been acquired by the Swan Valley Stampeders, completing the trade that saw D Justin Giesbrecht go to the Yorkton Terriers at last year's trade deadline. Niebrandt had 12-goals and 21-points last season, and has accumulated 175 PIM in his first two seasons of Junior 'A' hockey. Before all the coffee-rowers say "You JUST found this out?"... no... I heard the rumours as soon as anyone, about January 11th... but it wasn't official until it appeared on the MJHL website today.

- The Stampeders have also traded 20-year-old forward Jared Whincup to his hometown Portage Terriers for future considerations. Whincup had 8-goals and 17-points a year ago.

- The Waywayseecappo Wolverines have sent 18-year-old forward Richard Little to the Winnipeg Saints, completing a trade that has 20-year-old forward Jared McCarthy coming the other way. Little scored 10 goals as a 17-year-old last season.

Terrier AGM June 17

Just a friendly reminder.

The Yorkton Terriers' Annual General Meeting is Wednesday, June 17th, less than 2 weeks away, at the Gallagher Centre Convention Centre (upstairs) at 7:00.

The Terriers have 5 open spots on the executive this year. Contact Alan Hill if you'd like to run, at 782-8533, or 621-9242... or Randy Atkinson here at GX94 Radio... call the front desk at 782-2256, or the newsroom at 783-4319.

Not just here, but everywhere, it always seems everyone who's NOT on the board knows how it should be done, but those same people rarely put their names forward to run.

So here's your chance!

Cards/Moose Jaw Suspend Marathon

Five hours of baseball... still no winner.

It was 5-5 after 9... 6-6 after 15... 7-7 after 16... and it stayed that way through 18... at which point the Yorkton Cardinals and Moose Jaw Miller Express decided to pick it up another time. Moose Jaw's back in Yorkton June 13th... and they'll finish last night's game then, before starting fresh.

Full stats are not on the WMBL site yet, with the game not actually completed. And I don't have them! Although I did wait it out till the end. I know it was announced Cardinal pitching struck out (I think!) 26 Miller batters... and that was near the end of the game.

Part of me was disappointed they didn't finish, although it was midnight and I was up at 5:30... but I understand the decision.

Also wanna give some kudos to Calvin Daniels and Alex Mortgach from our local newspapers, who were also there till the bitter end.

Cardinals Split On Opening Day

The Yorkton Cardinals pushed two runs across homeplate in an opening day double header against the visiting Weyburn Beavers yesterday, but it was enough for a split, as they dropped Game One 3-1 in 10 innings, and won the second game 1-0.

The Cards almost won both games 1-0, having held a 1-0 lead in the first game into the ninth inning, when Weyburn tied it and then scored two more in the 10th. Chris Cox was the opening game starter, and gave up 2 hits and struckout 8 in just 5 innings of work. 4 Cardinal pitchers combined for 12 K's in the first game, and Will Thorp scored their only run.

Game 2 saw just a 7-inning game, and Jordan Herbison allowed only 2 hits to get the win, whlie walking one and striking out 6. Andrew Haake drove in the game's only run on an RBI double in the second.

The busy WMBL schedule continues tomorrow for the Cardinals as they host Moose Jaw at 7:00.

The Melville Millionaires are still off until Thursday when they open up against Regina at home.
