MJHL Draft Takes New Shape
If you're a fan of the MJHL, you likely know by now the changes the league has made to its entry draft. In the past, the draft has consisted of five rounds, while teams also got to protect five more draft-age players from their minor hockey zone (auto-protects).
Now, the draft will last 10 rounds, with no auto-protects. Teams can still draft their local kids, and the biggest change is, if they draft from outside their local zone in the first five rounds, then their zone is free game for the league's other 10 teams to pick from. However if you stay within your zone for your first five picks, no one else can draft from your local area. Rounds 6 through 10 are all open season.
This isn't new news by any stretch, but with the draft and league meetings coming up this weekend in The Pas, I figured it was worth a call into Commissioner Kim Davis to clarify any questions fans might still have heading into this weekend's draft.
MJHL Commissioner Kim Davis
What do you think of the new format? Does it really even out the playing field? Winnipeg teams historically draft Winnipeg players anyway... so in all likelihood other teams may not be able to take city kids until Round 6... unless of course the Saints or Blues go outside their boundaries in the first five rounds.
Ultimately teams want to get better, and if that means having less local players, they'll probably still do that, most small market fans will tell you the games mean more to them if hometown kids are on the ice. So who this new format probably hurts the most is local players in smaller markets, because no longer do teams HAVE to protect five. Although, if that player never made the team anyway, all they'd ever be was a one-year list player, and maybe get their picture in the paper and name on the radio when they get protected, but even that's pretty cool for a 15-year-old kid.
I find it interesting, I'm not saying good or bad, and I'm sure it'll be revisited after this year to get the 11 teams' opinions.
Your comments are welcomed, especially from MB!

On the Links With Schultzy!

That should be entertaining to say the least. Much like my golf game I'm sure. Laughable, considering this will be my first round of the year. Went to the range twice but it's not the same. And, if my range swing's any indication... this could be a long day. I may also find out which Rider D-lineman has a better swing, after being grouped with John Chick a year ago. I've never seen a person swing as hard as Chick (didn't always go straight but it always went far!). We were bailed out by Coach Ron Estay and Dr. Bernie Trischuk more than a few times!
While at the range I found I have ZERO golf balls in my bag... gotta take care of that between work and the tournament at 2:00. Goes to show how many I go through in the course of a summer I guess.
Today should be fun. Supper at Melrose Place after. Niiiiice.
Look for pictures/audio over the weekend with hopefully Schultz and Richie.

Earlier Games in 2009-10?
A big shot in the Yorkton Terriers' organization asked me to put a poll on the blog asking fans if they'd like to see home games moved to 7:00pm starts this coming season, instead of the usual 7:30. You can have your say by voting in the top right corner from now until their AGM, which, I believe, is June 17th.
Obviously this means the team is kicking around the idea for 2009-10, and they want your say. I believe a poll will also be made available at http://www.yorktonterriers.com/.
The Kindersley Klippers switched to 7:00 starts last season, and I love it, honestly. The only problem I can see is some people might work until 6:00, and have to get home, feed their family, and get to FAA by 7:00. But personally, after doing 80+ games in each of the last two seasons, I would not complain one bit if I was in bed half an hour earlier some nights... so I kinda hope the rest of the league eventually follows suit.
Your thoughts?
Please vote, and comment with your reasons why on this page. Also, if you're a Message Boarder, feel free to bring it up on the SJHL Message Board, and direct people to this site to have their say. Hits have been more than cut in half since hockey ended so increased traffic will obviously lead to more votes.

Mils' Murray Moves On / Butler Talks About Bowles Scholly

1988 F Tyler Murray will continue his hockey career after reaching an agreement to play at SAIT this autumn. Murray (Regina SK) rebounded with an excellent season by contributing 46-points in 55-games after suffering through a pair of injury plagued years.
- Murray also tied for the Mils' team lead with 7 goals in the playoffs.

The Yorkton Regional Raider Gridders had just one player at this year's Football Saskatchewan Senior Bowl, held yesterday (MON) at Mosaic Stadium, but they were still well-represented, with R.J. Skinner named Team South's Top Defensive Lineman in a 33-13 win over Team North.

Wayway's Bowles Joins Yorkton's Serdachny @ School

It was announced Bowles will also skate with the ECAC's Manhattanville Valiants in the NCAA Division III ranks in 2009-10.
The Elkhorn, MB native captained the Wolverines last season, and led the club with 79 points (27-52-79), in a year that saw him miss 9 games due to injury.

Monday Mumblings

- The 18th Annual Richie Hall Red Cross Golf Classic is set for Friday, May 22nd at the Deer Park Golf Course in Yorkton. Although he's the new Coach of the Edmonton Eskimos, this tournament's near and dear to Richie's Heart and he'll be making it back this year, along with several of his former Rider players, including DL Scott Schultz. Organizers Jeff Bahrey and Gene Krepakevich joined me live on the GX94 Morning Show today. Some details:
-- Today (May/11) is the early bird registration deadline. If you register by today, you go into a draw to get your $85 entry fee paid for.
-- Scott Schultz, Jeremy O'Day, Chunky Adams, Kennedy Nkeyasen are confirmed, with Wes Cates and Neal Hughes still possibilities.
-- Supper at Melrose Place after the golf. YES!
-- Everyone's into a draw for 2 tickets anywhere WestJet flies in Canada.
==============
- BIG Congratulations going out to Ochapowace Thunder Head Coach Danny McKay, who led the U18 Saskatchewan team to a National Aboriginal Hockey Gold Medal in Winnipeg this past week. Team Sask beat a Quebec-based team 8-0 in Saturday's final. Former Terrier Trainer Ron Holloway was also on the bench for the Gold Medalists.
- For the first time ever, the Yorkton Terriers' Home Lotto was a complete SELL-OUT. 3200 tickets sold means big $$$ for the hockey club.

I was away for the weekend, and will be again this Wednesday and Thursday after the unfortunate passing of my Grandpa this past Friday morning. It's the first time I've had to deal with this, and I feel fortunate to have had all 4 grandparents around for as long as I have. Still doesn't make it any easier. My only beef with him was since he lived in Humboldt and Watson the last few years he became a pretty big Bronco fan, and he was at almost every game I broadcasted in Humboldt with Yorkton or Melville the last 2 years. He always had time for his 16 grandkids (of which I'm the oldest), whether it was playing pool, going for coffee (pop/chips), or fishing. I appreciate any thoughts/prayers for my family through this time, especially my Mom and Grandma.
- And with me being gone, I also want to thank Randy Brenzen for steppin' up and covering the Yorkton Sports Hall of Fame Banquet on Saturday at the Gallagher Centre.

Zalba's a Neumann Knight
After spending most of his junior days in his native British Columbia with his hometown Victoria Grizzlies and Merritt Centennials, Zalba joined the Terriers for 24 games in 2008-09, where he put up 7-goals and 6-assists for 13-points.
Zalba joins defenseman Greg Coburn (Union College, NCAA Div I) as 2008/09 Terriers who've earned scholarships. Expect more to come in the weeks ahead.
Neumann College is located in Aston, Pennsylvania and the Knights play NCAA Division III in the ECAC Conference.
**Check back tomorrow (THU) for audio with Zalba.
Wanted: Schedules
Baseball season's underway or just about to start for most age groups... and I'm hoping to get as many scores/schedules on the air and the blog as possible. The only one that's been faxed to me so far has been the Prairie Midget Baseball League "AAA" Schedule by the Yorkton R. Miller Cardinals. I'm coming across some other websites that take care of some of the other local teams... but if you're anywhere in the GX94 listening area, East Central Saskatchewan or Western Manitoba, feel free to fire us off a schedule, whether you're a coach and/or parent, or even a player.
Also, sometimes we do get schedules, but NOT the scores. It's nice when we promote the game the day of to have the score for first thing the next morning. And nothing's too small. We're local radio... so if you're the coach of your kid's Mosquito team, please get us a schedule!

Speaking of Mosquito, Brian Trollope emailed yesterday to say a few Provincial Baseball Championship Tournaments are coming to the area this July.
Mosquito A provincials in Yorkton July 17-19
Mosquito A2 provincials in Preeceville July 17-19
Bantam AA and Midget AA provincials in Melville July 24-26

Sticking with the local summer sports theme, the defending Champion Tier II Prairie Gold Lacrosse League Champion Yorkton Bulldogs kick off a new season this Saturday night at home against the Saskatoon Smash at 7:00.

Checking In / Any Ideas?
With the local hockey scene done, and baseball just kinda gettin rolling... and due to my sporadic posting of late, my I see this blogs hits are taking a "hit" lately. Can't blame ya... not much to read about over here these days. But there are still a few faithful readers out there, so I figured I'd hit the refresh button.
- I took most of last week off as kind of a "post-hockey break." Branded calves at the farm last weekend, spent some time in Stoon, and finally some house hunting all day Saturday. Want to get into an affordable housing market? Don't come to Yorkton. Seriously!
- Not doing my regular website checks as often last week... I just noticed tonight (SUN), that the new MJHL team in Steinbach, did infact shed itself of the Blades' name, and the Steinbach PISTONS will begin play in 09-10. Didn't roll off the tongue the first time I said it, but it's like anything, you'll get used to it. Steinbach's a big "car town," so I figured the name would have something to do with the auto industry. Voice of the OCN Blizzard Jamie Smalley tells me the Blizz will announce their new Head Coach Tuesday morning. How they let Doug Hedley go after last season, and with the amount of guys coming back this year is absolutely beyond me, and as an outsider I'd like to say B.S., but I don't claim to know the ins and outs of what went on up there. To me it looked like a big stab in the back to Hedder, who was the first coach I worked with as a radio guy in Dauphin in 2005-06. I was sad to see that for sure.
- My Saturday night was spent at St. Mary's Cultural Centre for the 3rd annual "Football Night in Saskatchewan." I've attended the event the last two years, I think everyone will agree it does get bigger and better every year. It's a fundraiser for the Yorkton Pee Wee Football League, and SO many people work their tails off to make the night happen. I can't name everyone, but kudos have to go to YRHS Raiders' Coach Roby Sharpe. He's one of the many brains behind the idea, and I know for a fact Sharpe-Dawg enjoyed himself again this year. The Saskatchewan Roughriders are always generous donating auction items and of course supplying the keynote speakers. This year we were treated to one of the best Riders ever, runningback George Reed, President & CEO Jim Hopson, OL Gene Makowsky DL Chunky Adams and DL Luc Mullinder. Also gotta thank my boss Lyle Walsh. I wondered why Hopson and Reed were looking lonely with a bunch of empty chairs around them at the head table. They wound up auctioning off the other 8 seats... and the GX94 (Lyle) table was the high-bidder, and we got to spend the evening with those gentlemen. Also had a big gift basket full of Rider goodies at the head table, most of which I swiped (yes, I'm the grubby on-air guy!). Fantastic food by the way... kind of a given being made by the gifted Babas at St. Mary's! Thanks as well to Preeceville Panthers' Head Coach Jason Boyda for the beer! I've grown pretty tight with that team the last couple years, having called a provincial game on the air in each of the last two seasons and MC'd their banquet in February. They went to provincial final last year, falling to Clavet, but they bring back a lot of guys, so hopefully 2009's the year... and hopefully you'll hear the championship on GX94. Congrats to GX94's Randy Atkinson on another job well done as MC of this year's Football Night. I enjoy doing those gigs, but I never complain about watching someone else do it... just means more food/drinks for this guy. I got some audio from Hopson, Reed, local Rider Cheerleader Brittany Thies, and Hamilton Tiger-Cat and Yorkton product Jordan Matechuk. Look for those interviews on the blog and on GX this coming week.
===============
Since this site's only getting MAYBE a third of the traffic it was getting during hockey season, I'll pose this question a few times in the coming months. I was actually proud of myself for actually sticking with this for what's been close to a year now... I really thought it'd run its course and die out. But I still wanna make it better and increase viewers for next season... even starting with Cardinals/Millionaires baseball (but probably mainly hockey season... I'll tell you right now I'm off from July 23 - August 10, so I won't be seeing as much WMBL action this summer).
But back to the question... is there anything else you'd like to see on the blog? More of? Less of? I'm open to any suggestions... you're the viewer/listener afterall. I'm thinking of adding more video for the hockey season. I think audio/video is what makes it worth reading. Anyone can write up game summaries from the SJHL or MJHL website and preview games with stats that anyone can see on the same sites. However not everyone can take a microphone and camera to 80 out of town games per season... so I wanna keep doing that and adding to it. As far as the template (backgrounds, colours, etc)... blogger.com has a pretty good selection, but nothing's THAT flashy... I honestly like my current colours the best... but I might get bored with it and relaunch a new look in the summer/fall. I still haven't made one red cent off this little project, and don't plan to, but it's fun, so might as well make it worth while.
Please do comment!

Hope to Augustana / Local WHL Draftees
Graduating Melville Millionaires' Captain Daniel Hope has committed to the ACAC's Augustana Vikings for the upcoming season. He'll suit up alongside his former Tisdale Trojan "AAA" teammate Torey Dyck (Nipawin Hawks).
More details next week once my holidays are done.
